This is an excellent game which strikes a good balance between simulation and gameplay, creating an experience which is both complex and challenging but simple enough to get started with that newcomers to the submarine sim genre can jump right in and have fun.
Overall the gameplay is tense and can be paced to your own tastes through the use of time compression. The tutorials are perhaps not as thorough as one might hope, and there are a few critical functions which are bafflingly only attached to shift+a key bindings which should definitely be given buttons on screen, but other than that the user interface is good and provides critical information well. Also of note is the fact that the game does allow for UI rescaling so this game is suitable for use with UHD 4k screens, and looks fantastic on them.
If you're at all interested in the setting and enjoy games with deliberate, thoughtful gameplay then this title is certainly worth looking at.
Concealed gem.
This game is amazing but beginners will have a very hard time.
The game actually has a tutorial but it's the most boring one possible, no checkpoints, flags, arrows, voice over, mid objetives... It's just a windows with what you need to learn written and that's it. If you made it wrong and actually did not learn what you had to learn, your problem... and that's the main problem.
After you understand all the information that is shown on screen in a tutorial video on youtube, the game becomes a SENSATIONAL submarine simulator. The game is easily modded and the community is always doing new stuff.
If you love the tension of a submarine battle, just go to youtube to learn the game and play it, it's well worth it.
An excellent game for all submarine sims fan. Even if not a sim in the most hardcore sense, it still has a pretty steep leaning curve regarding strategy and tactics. The replayablility is great, but the game would be even better with some additionnal features and a bit more of system management. The sound track is great, and the AI is ruthless when playing in the higest difficulty settings. A must have.
As a Navy Veteran, I'm not easy to please in this area. With that said, it's 3am and I've been trying to exit the conn for 3 hours. Killerfish did a great job of tailoring this as something in between a study sim and a casual game. You can dive deeper (pun) into it if you want and become more effective, or you can wing it and still have fun. I took a few points off the score because it lacks granular keyboard controls. I hooked up DWVAC voice controls to the control schema that's available, but I still have to use the keyboard often. For instance, if you want to order the dive officer to take you to a specific depth, you have to click arrows (no numeric entry or even shortcuts for the arrows). However, if you want to micromanage your dive officer, you can use DWVAC to say "Bow planes 10 degrees down" and watch your depth closely, then say "level the bow planes". I'd prefer to give orders and let them carry those orders out since you play the part of the captain and should have situational awareness of many more pressing matters. I do like the fact that you don't have to learn target motion analysis to use the sonar, but it's still usable in that you can manually match the signature to get a faster contact validation. This means you don't have to study for six months to understand it, but you still get to take part in the interesting aspects. Well done! If you want to learn something about submarine warfare, I highly recommend this game. If you are looking for a study sim, I still recommend it and believe it's worth the money.. it's not so simple that it will insult your intelligence.
Pretty fun game, for any submarine sim fans that used to get a kick out of games like Seawolf and such you will probably like this one. It's a good balance of the sim aspects with fun, and it's fairly action packed (you don't really spend a lot of time waiting around for anything).
Pros:
- Graphics are decent but not over the top, good enough to look good and plays well on mid-range systems
- Lots of interesting ships you can command and surface vessels/aircraft
- Captures that old school feel of this type of genre
Cons:
- A little rough around the edges, the interface is a bit weird but you get used to it, there was also one case where at the start of a campaign mission my sub got spawned in the ground and instantly sunk, but that's only happened once
- The campaign is cool but the odd time some weird stuff happens like you being assigned a task but not being able to actually complete it because it expires before you can arrive there
Other then that recommend this game for anybody who was into those old sub sim games.
I've always been a submarine sims fan and, since the Silent Hunters series there have been none to speak about. So, I was really looking forward for this game when it was announced and purchased it at full price when it finally came out. What a disappointment! It was obviously made for multiplayers. The solo campaigns are short and the missions repetitious. I did get some enjoyment out of it but mostly because it had been so long I had played a submarine sim. Pros:
- Finally a submarine sim!!!
- Beautiful and realistic graphics
- Realistic simulation of sub models
- Sometimes challenging scenarios
Cons:
- Short single player campaigns
- Repetitive missions
- AI sometimes “too smart”, detecting your sub and or torpedo while smack in its baffle.
- Disappointing ending
Conclusion:
Go for it if you love submarine sims but don’t expect to get your full money’s worth.
