Emily is Away < 3 doesn’t wear your nostalgia like a mask, it brings you back to the feelings of being a high schooler when the world is only as big as your social group.
This game presents a very normative, happy retrospective for what was the basis of our interactions becoming commodified by surveillance. It’s impossible to untangle the complex mess of pop culture and corporate harm from one another. Yet, Emily is Away <3 seems to only remember the sugary sweet poke wars. That doesn’t make it a bad game, but it does make it a naïve one.
I was a bit bummed when I saw this game goes away from the AIM format and goes into the next generation of Facebook, which is not something I have any nostalgia for. But, it still works for me, as all of the modern tech and internet tools it utilizes in its story telling works well. Still a really good emotional story that will have you wanting to play through at least a second time.
Summary:
Great, nostalgic, atmospheric game. The progress is huge compared to the first two games from 'Emily is Away' franchise. Yet, for some reason, I got a little bit bored with this teenage 'romance' stuff. But the game is still worth playing and the player should try it out.
Definitely better than the previous installments. Adding a Mat helped the atmosphere and realism of the game a ton. I really enjoyed it. Although I expected more options and better story elements.
