It is quite rare for an mobile game, especially one based on a TV show to be as good as this. Steven Universe: Attack the Light draws inspiration from RPGs such as the Mario and Luigi series, of which the turn based combat is highly involved with blocking enemies' attacks and timing your own attacks. Along the way, you can level up your characters and upgrade their attacks and equip them with badges.
The enemies are nicely varied and the worlds are simple and vibrant, which quite suits the style of the show. This game changes the combat with a star meter which accounts for the amount of points you can use per turn (maximum of nine) with each turn starting with five. Though not ground-breaking, it allows players to be more involved and economical in strategizing which moves to use. This is a great starting game for younger gamers or those who want to delve in games of the RPG genre.
The story isn't anything spectacular, but the game has a slew of references of the show that made me chuckle. It's not too long, but it's great fun and pretty cheap for what it is.
Despite its sometimes-slow battles (which honestly do speed up a bit once you gain a few levels and learn how to use your skills efficiently), Attack the Light is a solid, budget-priced RPG that gets by on its own merits regardless of how much you know about Steven Universe.
Steven Universe : Attack the Light is one of the, if not the best TV show based game I have played yet. Even if you aren't familiar with Steven Universe as a TV show, the game's amazing story, visual candy graphics and ORIGINAL VOICE WORK by the TV shows cast is an immediate best-buy. I have it on both my Android and my Kindle because of how much I am in love with this game.
Free app of the week this week. I've logged about 3 hours so far and it feels like a pretty good game. Impressively this game has no in app purchases which is nearly impossible to find this day and age, and for just a fairly simple RPG and "kids game," the RPG depth is pretty impressive. The fighting style is similar to some of the Mario RPG games if you'd like a comparison. The characters can wear badges that give different perks and so far, it seems like a fairly decent game length. My only gripe is that it's a bit repetitive. So far I've been having fun, but the battles can get repetitive and can last a lot longer than necessarily wanted. I also passed some spots in some levels that require items I don't yet have to access. To me, this is a bit lame as it seems like one of those games that ups the playing time by making you backtrack, which can get annoying (like Paper Mario: Sticker Star did). At any rate, for just a few bucks, this is a wonderful game, and if you look it up now until the end of the week, you can even get it for free.
