Palia is a wonderful game with so much potential. It does almost everything I wish other similar games had done, and really well. It’s easy to get lost for hours, so definitely make sure it’s your day off or something before picking this up. Also, make sure you have a stable internet connection. Since it is an MMO it unfortunately does not offer offline play, which is probably the only bad part of the title. I’m eager to continue the storyline as well as increase my skill levels and friendships with the NPCs. I highly recommend Palia to anyone looking for a new cozy game.
Palia isn’t really anything special, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be. There’s a fun gameplay loop to engage with here that fans of farm sims will be sure to enjoy, and though the MMO elements feel rather underbaked in this pre-1.0 release, the microtransactions don’t feel overbearing and there’s enough solo-focused content here to make it worth trying out. It would be tough to recommend you pick this one up were it a full-price retail release, but you’re sure to get at least an afternoon or two of good fun if you choose to try it out. At the end of the day, it costs nothing but time and storage space to give Palia a shot; we’d suggest you download it and see if it’s for you—especially if you can’t get enough of farm sims. We'll be back to see how this shakes out in 2024. [Review in Progress]
Absolutely phenomenal cozy game. Is an MMO but you don't have to interact with anyone you don't want to. Takes the best parts of games like Harvest Moon, Story of Seasons, **** Valley, Animal Crossing, etc. and mashes them all up into one big cozy multiplayer game that is FREE! It does have micro transactions but only in the form of clothing but you get so many options for free. Farming, crafting, hunting, cooking, bug catching, fishing, decorating, and so much more! Even has NPC friendships and romances! Game even has a decent story and a whole world of lore with much more planned by the developers. If you like cozy games, give it a try. It's free after all but feels like a full fledged game I bought. Don't let the words MMO stear you away. It's wonderful and currently one of my favorites, will be for a long time.
If anyone wants to, use 5d0e398d-d206-4e2a-a29d-e50abc4e311d when signing up for a free in game item. If not, ignore. Either way, hope you try it and have fun. Add me if you want, The Wizard of Wonder
This performed amazing on the Switch for me. I noticed it performs the best when docked, when not docked there is some slight lag when hunting and the UI is a bit small. I did not run into any bugs yet and feel like this game was amazingly optimized. I can't believe the devs didn't charge at least an entry fee for this. I've definetly paid for cozy games like this anywhere from $30-$60 and some of those arnt anywhere close to how fleshed out this felt.
Overall this feels very solo friendly too, I'm not much of a fan of multiplayer games so I like that it doesn't force me. The only forced multiplayer is some aspects with some of the gathering elements but there are so many players always around that i never really noticed any shortage of help. It constantly refreshes the instance you're playing in so it feels like people are always around even in the dead of night.
The loading times arnt so bad either, on the Switch takes maybe 20 seconds to load in and 20 seconds anytime you need to instance back to your home. Not totally unreasonable given the Switches hardware. AAA games like Hogwarts Legacy had way worse loading times.
Overall this is like the ultimate cozy experience, i only wish that maybe the devs monetized a bit more, I'm just scared with how little they monetize that this game won't have longevity. The cosmetics offered when creating your character are good enough to not feel the need to dive into the cash shop. The cosmetics are though really over priced so it kinda makes me really second guess buying currency to support the devs. I think if they lowered the prices it'd be more appealing and maybe other add-on content like new areas or whatever might work. What they are doing now is just so overly generous that I can't imagine a company letting this go on too much longer, otherwise they might go under. We will see. Just hope theyy stick to monetization thst isn't predatory, in the meantime since I been playing this so hard I might just buy a cosmetic to show my support.
There is just so much content in here it's wild and really changes my percpective on other cozy games try to charge for and not even come close to delivering this much content.
The performance is also amazing, however some of the hunting aspects might turn off some people as that's where you see lag the most when you're not docked.
I really am so glad this game came to switch and hope the devs just keep building onto it.
At first glance, I was skeptical about diving into this game, especially after hearing about its negative reviews. However, after spending a solid hour and twenty minutes, I found myself pleasantly surprised.
Despite not being my typical genre,I usually lean towards games like CS and Rainbow,I found this game to be oddly cozy. Sure, there were a few lag spikes, notably when exiting the initial cave, but they were tolerable considering the overall experience.
Graphically, the game falls somewhere between okay and good. While it may not boast cutting-edge visuals, they are certainly enjoyable and contribute to the overall atmosphere.
In terms of gameplay, I found it to be refined, offering a smooth and engaging experience. However, I couldn't help but be slightly disappointed by the animations, which felt lacking compared to other aspects of the game.Overall,
I would rate this game a solid 8.7 out of 10.
Despite its flaws, it managed to exceed my expectations and provide an enjoyable gaming experience.
Gonna post the review from the viewpoint of PC and Switch play.
It’s on beta – or is it? They pretty much released the game on Switch without mentioning it is still in beta. Many Switch-players in the community have found out the fact only after logging to social media. And their surprise is warranted since beta should mean feature-complete, but there are only two areas plus your house. The main gameplay loop is there, but if one wants to explore the game a bit further, the main questline ends rather quickly, and what is left is the grind of building your house, leveling up your skills and relationship levels. Nothing but a grind.
It is cozy – until it’s not: after you get through the honeymoon phase, you realize how the game is lacking in multiple ways. There are bigger storyline-related quests, but most are just simple random fetchquests. The foraging and mining are chores for house materials – and the gameplay is basically click, get, move, repeat, until you need to fix your tools so they don’t break. The resource pool is lacking: three types of wood, three types of ore, three types of huntables, and this means in order to progress you need lots of those. And if one wants to be a completionist, there is just too much RNG in gathering rare fishes for example, that people try and try for multiple days for one fish. Doesn’t sound appealing, let alone cozy.
It is grindy – and then the game is cleared: probably every game has some sort of a min-maxing community, but due to the fact that Palia is underdeveloped, the min-maxers have become a prominent part of the community. They trade tips on resource gathering and making money, and the moment of contemplation about “wait, why I’m doing this” comes all too soon. Because there is no real reason to grind and continue. No endgame. Many people are just finished with the game, literally. Done all the quests, leveled up all relationships and then the only aspect that could offer anything of value would be the multiplayer. Would.
MMO-aspects are almost non-existent: if I’m properly informed, one server fits 24 people, and every time you switch locations, you server-hop, which means that the chance of forming permanent relationships withers. For the actual multiplayer content: certain trees and huntable prey need multiple people, which includes waiting for people to respond to callouts in chat. And it has become a bother since Switch release, since it is a pain to write with Switch’s controller-operated keyboard, so people just don’t do it. There are no treasure-hunt dungeons, no building together, no mini-games (except some seasonal ones), no real party-benefits at all. And what’s worst: people are actively competing against you for limited resources. See that nice tree over there: someone is coming to chop it before your eyes. Oh, how cozy.
The community believes in the game – or have overdosed on copium: everything in this game is something I genuinely wanted to like, but after searching for the content that is a given staple of either cozy games or multiplayer games, I found neither proper cozy or multiplayer. The community online say “it’s still beta” or “the devs listen”, but this game has been developed from the start of 2018 and the company has 163 employees, and this is what they have to show for it: grindy gameplay loop, two areas, non-existent multiplayer content and "a MMO" that can actually be played through in a couple of weeks. A game that is more like an early access, but labeled as beta, and released on Switch without a mention of that.
I feel like the shortcomings of the game are fundamental game design choices and the road of redemption would be long as **** in the end I want to say that I’m not dissing anyone who genuinely likes this game and enjoys it. For me it was an underwhelming experience. And to everyone who defends the game because of it’s potential, because “it’s still in beta” and “they listen” and “will add more content later”. I would say that similar things happen in relationships. You wish the other party would be what you always wanted to, and you cling onto the vision of how it is gonna be when just after the other party makes a few changes. And when other people make valid points on how the state of relationship is not okay, you’ll say that “it’s still in beta, they listen, they’ll add more content later”. And in the end: some stay, some leave, and it’s all up to personal choice.
But damn, I would’ve so liked to love this game, but alas. It was not meant to be.
The user interface lags.
You cannot create more than one character (per Switch profile?).
You cannot play the game unless your Switch profile is linked to a nintendo account even though the game requires that you also create a Palia account (so why the restriction?). This means your kid's profile probably won't work.
Finger crossed the PC won't be as bad.
The Game is an absolute cash grab. The Developers dont care about bugs, nor is there any communication with the player base. Instead of fixing bugs they add more and more to the in-game premium shop.
Its laggy as hell, game breaking glitches all the way and bugs which are getting worser with every update.
Repetitive game play loops, realy bad graphics and terrible game mechanics.
It feels and plays like a early 2000s game.
Also its definitely not for child's with the dialogue given in the game.
On top of that, any criticism in discord or reddit are put down by the singularity 6 team. Its ridiculous.
Worst Gamet this year by far.
