When everyday Londoners mysteriously turn into vicious killers, only the circus' lineup of Strongmen, Fire Blowers, Clowns and other performers possess the unique talents necessary to save the city.

Circus Electrique is part story-driven RPG, part tactics, part circus management, and completely enthralling - all with a steampunk twist.

Through tactical turn-based battles, these unlikely heroes face Bobbies, British Sailors gone bad, aggressive Posh Girls, and other Victorian-era archetypes stand in their way - not to mention the occasional menacing Mime or Robobear.

The game's innovative Devotion morale system affects characters' performance not only in battles, but also for actual circus shows, dutifully managed between heroic jaunts through six sprawling districts.

Circus Electrique combines tricky turn-based combat and circus management to create a wonderful game for those willing to learn all the mechanics.

The extreme amount of minutiae in Circus Electrique's simulation and tactical combination may seem overly complicated to some players, and to a point they wouldn't be wrong - the game could certainly stand to have a few less materials and there are moments it feels like the game is trying to do too much. However, one of the best parts of the game is it's only as complex as the player wants it to be, managing to be both complex yet accessible. Alongside the fact the game offers an always-available guide to all of its features, players can very well enjoy the game on a more surface level and still get enjoyment out of it. On the other hand, there are certainly players who will enjoy contemplating the perfect next move and ideal circus show lineup for ages, and Circus Electrique offers that style of player the complexity they desire in spades. Whether players are looking for their next strategic obsession or just some steampunk circus fun, Circus Electrique offers an experience almost every type of tactical fan can enjoy.

Circus Electrique has a unique vibe, inventive art, and a thoroughly detailed devotion to its steampunk setting. For patient gamers with a love for stats and carefully managed decisions, the engaging combat will be icing on the cake. For some players, Circus Electrique might feel overwhelming, with one or two (or more) mechanics too many. There can be a lot of information on screen, and even more behind the scenes. The presentation is generally fantastic, but players used to simpler games might be surprised at how much work goes into running a circus.

Circus Electrique is a perfect balance of circus management, dungeon exploration, and story. Each aspect works perfectly with the other, and the result is a fun and satisfying experience. Unfortunately, the slow pacing and large amount of information show the limitations of the perfect balance. While everything works well together, it never goes beyond a good experience. It’s like a middling circus performance; it’s fun to watch, but it isn’t remarkable.

Circus Electrique is enjoyable not only for its accurate depiction of the Victorian era aesthetic but also for its distinctive class and combat system and flexibility found in creating lineup combinations. The idea behind the game’s creation is innovative, but what it offers in creativity lacks execution. Several thematic elements make it stand out from typical genre tropes, yet I can’t help but feel that it would have been better served if it had focused on polishing its foundation.

Circus Eletrique may not win a standing ovation with its juggling show, but it manages to respectably keep the various elements that it brings to tent flying in the air. The art direction of the game is phenomenal and the combat is quite deep and fun. The management may not please everyone, especially as the narrative unfolds, but it is nonetheless a very fun and accomplished experience.

In the end, the main takeaway I have from playing through Circus Electrique is just how flat it all feels. Playing the game is never explicitly unpleasant but is never memorable or particularly fun, either. Instead, the game is almost liminal. So while the game is unlikely to end up on any lists for worst games of the year, I doubt that most players who try it will remember its release for very long.

Where the game really falls flat is with its main character and supporting cast. Very little to no development and none are worthwhile playing with. Graphics are a mixed bag with a old school grainy film effect. Its not bad but could be better. In the end, the poor story and bad characters will make you lose your interest sooner rather than later. Expand
