If you like shooting infinite hordes of monsters from a top-down perspective, Crimsonland is one of the best options you have.

It’s fast, full of enemies, and has a sweet soundtrack to boot. It’s hard to ignore how powerful Crimsonland makes the player feel as they mow down copious enemies as blood splatters cover the entire field.

Crimsonland is one of those very simple games that is very easy to pick up and play, but extremely difficult to master.

It is a fun game but we get the feeling that it could have been expanded upon. If you're looking for just a twin-stick shooter have a look at this one.

A traditional top-down shooter that relies heavily on mastered game mechanics, a huge number of levels, weapons and monsters, and gameplay that will satisfy your lust for blood. Unfortunately, it is designed as a multiplayer game which cannot be played via the Internet, which drastically undermines its entertainment.

Is it great to play solo? Perhaps the first 60 missions. I can attest to having fun despite the problems I noted, but it is definitely better to play with your friends afterwards, especially in Survival. BLAST ‘EM TO BITS!

Crimsonland may not be particularly flashy, but it does successfully deliver an old-school arcade shooting experience.

I heard it compared at least once to Smash TV, and that's probably the best comparison. Run, shoot, reload, pick up some powerups like smart bombs, incendiary rounds, bullet time and arcing electrical blasts, and hopefully not die. There's a lengthy quest mode, as well as a bunch of survival modes, all of which have up to four player, same-screen local coop, a rarity for PC games. The graphics are minimal but sufficient, and the music is completely appropriate cheesy buttrock. A great party game. Expand

You run around the screen and shoot huge armies of melee enemies approaching from all sides. You have a small arsenal of weapons to choose from. The controls (rotating the character with the mouse and moving with WASD) work pretty well. The music is great, and the whole thing is extremely addictive. It has pretty low-budget graphics, even for the time when it was released, but this doesn't really matter. Expand

Same old game, same old flaws like many weapons being useless and various perks also being mostly useless. There is an odd difficulty curve, the singleplayer missions are all fairly easy except for 2.10 and 6.10 because of Spideroids on those two missions. They make the game nearly impossible especially on harder difficulties, whereas every other level and boss is easy in comparison. Despite these flaws everyone I know keeps playing it when they have 10 minutes to burn. Any crappy PC can run it and it has local coop but only with controllers for the extra players which is very hard to aim with. I'd hate to call it a classic but it fits the definition literally, a game you kept going back to for years. It's a cheaply made budget 2d shooter, yes, but it's also well-done for what it is and for some reason keeps pulling you back. Expand

Crimsonland is a passable twin stick shooter that suffers from very few frills and a system based more on luck than skill. In the majority ofCrimsonland is a passable twin stick shooter that suffers from very few frills and a system based more on luck than skill. In the majority of the levels, your character moves at the same speed or slower than the enemies. Consequently, the only way to keep the hordes at bay is to mow them down, but how quickly you can accomplish this depends very much on what type of gun you're using. The first enemy you kill on each level drops a gun, but these range from useless to beneficial, so often you can determine whether it's worth trying to beat a higher-difficulty level from your first kill. The perk system (what skills you can acquire on leveling) follows this formula as well, so if the choices you get for your first level up are poor, your success rate for the board drops dramatically.

Combine this random system with bland terrain (a rectangle with no obstacles) and a vaguely nebulous hitbox, and you've pretty much seen the entire game. There's a fair variety of enemy types which somewhat keeps things interesting, and you have a range of guns and powerups as well. But once you've put a couple hours into the game you learn what's useful to acquire and prioritize that over variety. Also, in addition to level progression (quest mode) there are several types of endless challenge mode. But everything ends up feeling pretty similar after not too long.

To sum up, it's fun to play for a bit, but after a couple hours you'll probably get bored. Pick it up if you like twin stick shooters and can find it on sale for a buck or two, but otherwise you're not missing much.
