Although somewhat lacking on the horror front, PROJECT ZERO: Maiden of Black Water is a fun time with an interesting story and gorgeous graphics. The audio could use some improvement, but the pros far outweigh the cons.

Project Zero 5 is not a bad game: with its Japanese horror movie atmosphere reminiscent of The Grudge or the mythical The Ring, Koei Tecmo's survival-horror succeeds in immersing the player in its scary universe full of macabre stories and tormented spirits. Also, Gamepad is for once very well exploited with a Camera Obscura to be controlled directly with the gyroscope (or the sticks if you wish). Unfortunately, the numerous back and forths to do during the game and the general stiffness of the gameplay make the pleasure of the game fall very quickly, leaving only a nice adventure, but far from being memorable.

The arrival of Maiden of Black Water makes for a major addition to the PC horror games catalogue. The use of the camera in dealing with tortured spirits and the blend of fiction and folklore from Japan is delightful. The slow pace of the plot and repetition of areas, however, make Maiden of Black Water less scary and memorable than we would have liked.

Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water suffers from some dated design decisions and redundancies in level design, but the unique combat and evocative environments make this a worthwhile adventure for horror fans.

Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water arrives just in time to celebrate Halloween as well as the series’ 20th anniversary. Unfortunately, a combination of clunky gameplay, impractical character decisions, and overused text exposition hold this game back from where it could be. Using the camera obscura to excorcise ghosts is tense and exciting, and the exploration isn’t half bad, but it’s not enough to tip the scales in the right direction.

Unless you are a hardcore fan, existing players will not find much to gain from picking this up. This is a release for newcomers, which to be honest, there will be millions who would have missed this due to the platform it was originally released on. For those people, you can expect a creepy game that oozes atmosphere, but is hampered by cumbersome controls and poor pacing. A trade-off I personally feel is worth taking to experience Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water‘s bespoke approach to horror.

So scary but also so engaging and fun! For the PC version there is no frame rate issues whatsoever with fast loading times. Must play!

I was aware that there was frame rate issues with this game but after locking my frame rate to 60 hz and using it on an external monitor, the fps was terrible. 12-15 fps in general, menu, cutscene and gameplay. It was a horrible experience. Not only that but the lack of mouse support makes this game uncomfortable. I decided to connect a PS4 controller to my pc and to my surprise all the problems faded away but still, the requirement of having a gamepad on a pc port is not ok. This could be a problem for people that don't use or either have one.

tdlr: FPS, Lack of mouse support and if you don't have a gamepad then the fps and controls will be horrible for you so keep that in mind. I have an Nvidia GeForce 1060 card and core i7 and still encountered this issues but it all went away as soon as I started the game with a controller connected.

Black screen after intro due to some sort of full-screen bug. I suppose you could run in it a window/ borderless, but who cares? Its a stupid bug that shouldn't be in a release. Introductory sequence felt VERY hand hold-y for a Fatal Frame title. So no thanks, they tore out loads of stuff deemed to "spicy" for Americans in terms of censorship too, I'll stick with Crimson Butterfly instead. I didn't have any performance issues like the rest of you schmucks that have no idea how to maintain your PC or your hardware. Game runs fine, it would probably just play better on the console it came out on. Expand
