So what is Hatred? Its a remake of original "Postal" game of 1997s
    1)Looking good on UE4.
    2)Looks atmospheric (Kill all humans)
    3)Lil boring on gameplay part
But still it's a freaking good game to satisfy inner monster and one of its kind.

Hatred has had a rather bumpy ride to release. Valve originally pulled it from Steam Greenlight only to have it reinstated the next day, whilst GOG.com refuse to actually distribute the game. Valve originally pulled it from Steam Greenlight only to have it reinstated the next day, whilst GOG.com refuse to actually distribute the game. So what is all the fuss about? The developer Destructive Creations touts Hatred as “an isometric shooter with disturbing atmosphere of mass killing, where the player takes the role of a cold blood antagonist, who is full of hatred for humanity”.

“It’s a horror, but here YOU are the villain.”

As you can see, the trailer revels in the antagonist’s massacre of civilians with much enthusiasm, and you would be forgiven for being reminded of Manhunt or Postal.

The game does deal with quite a graphic and dark theme and it’s not for everyone, so for this review I am going to attempt to leave my morality at the door.

I played Hatred using my preferred weapon of choice – a keyboard and mouse. Control wise, the game is pretty much what you would expect from an isometric view. W,A,S,D moves the player while the aiming reticule is provided by the mouse. Aiming in itself can be a little “hit and miss” (stop it) and this is mostly down to the camera. A fair few times I am being shot at from off screen with rather good accuracy. The player can combat this by aiming, which zooms the camera out slightly, however I found this to be a hindrance in some of the more hectic engagements as my aim is thrown off.

The actual combat isn’t ground breaking but in itself feels solid, most of your civilian targets will attempt to flee and you will literally gun them down from behind and watch them fall to the floor. The police and eventually soldiers are much more aggressive towards you but do have a tendency to funnel towards you allowing you to dispatch them as they turn corners or move up. Occasionally they do flank you, or as I’ve also found some civilians will pick up dropped weapons and shoot you, something our protagonist certainly deserves.

Other than the camera throwing you off when you aim, combat appears to have 2 other oddities. Firstly targets stood right next to you can have the reticule on their face and you will still miss and secondly crouching appears to mitigate a lot of damage in that the AI seems to miss a hell of a lot more.

Controversy aside, a decent game, although lacking in innovation and character development.

    (On a less serious note)
"This game has too much violence, it should be banned!" Violence? HA! My Little Pony has more violence than this game.

It's fun for an hour or two but it gets repetitive really quick. Almost every level it's just "kill innocents"and then "kill cops/soldiers".

Controversy aside (and the game isn't as bad as the media made it seem to be), it's just a boring top-down shooter with average gameplay and a pretty decent use of destruction physics. And incredibly hard, sometimes. Visuals could be better too,

Visuals could be better too, considering what the Unreal Engine 4 can do.
If you want to give it a try, wait for a sale, it's not an horrendous game...but it isn't a good one either, even though recent patches did solve some issues

It's an OK game. It doesn't have much content and it doesn't have much replay value. But it looks cool, it works fine, it's satisfying and the PhysX physics engine is very cool. It has some bugs but nothing critical.

I want to point out that there's absolutely nothing in Hatred that would warrant for its AO rating. This is M or T at best when compared to the other similarly violent

There isn't much story in the game. But I found it interesting to ponder what kind of events have caused the Hatred guy's milk spill over so badly.

It's fun for what its worth. But get it from the Steam sale or something.

A fun game and really controversial, reminds me of Postal a lot, just faster. Too bad controls are bad, graphics are bad (gray looks cool but plays bad, hard to see targets) and game is unstable and crashes a lot.
I recommend getting it on sale if you like wild games like that.

Contrary to popular belief, I honestly don't think this game was made for the sake of being dark and edgy and shockingly offensive for the sake of being offensive, I'm pretty positive by how over the top and self-aware this game is (there's even an achievement called Edgy), that it was made as an Earnest to how the media/conservatives etc. view modern videogames. That being said, the game in a technical sense is awful. The optimization is almost non-existent, running at a locked 60 fps in very confined areas (the only ones being the tutorial and train level), and struggling to hit 30 fps anywhere else, regardless if the game is maxed out or on the lowest settings possible. With a computer that can run Battlefield 4 on Ultra settings without the game ever dipping below 60 fps, needless to say this game should not be running so poorly. In terms of graphics, they're above average I'd say, and I do find the art direction where the only things that are colored are the things that involve death and destruction very nice, even if it does get a bit harsh on the eyes (although it would be easier to look at if the game ran properly). The gameplay itself is very bare-bones if not feeling very meaty, with the standard 3 weapon, 3 grenade layout, however I did find it fun in the later levels when the game had actual objectives, as the killing of innocent people gets old and boring on its own, similar to the way messing about in Grand Theft Auto gets old without actual objectives. The game itself is extremely challenging once the army starts coming after you, even on Easy, which the game kindly rewards you with the "Wuss" achievement for completing the game on said difficulty, that being said, once the game started throwing gallons of high-health high-damage enemies at you, I found it to become more about frantic strategy, trying not to run out of ammo by running over the corpses of the enemies you've killed in turn running out into open fire, trying to regain health by mashing Q over everyone you've killed in hopes that you'll get a lucky execution, trying to find proper cover when you're surrounded; I found it all pretty entertaining, if not very frustrating at times when the REG (Random Execution Generator) was not on your side. In terms of sound design, the soundtrack and sound effects (mission get, mission complete, etc.) were outstanding, and very fitting to the game's content. The gun and explosion sounds are okay, although they could have been better off with a bit more punch and bass; they do get the job done though. All-in-all this is a bit less than solid game, but I did have fun with it. Beside the ending sucking and not being nearly as over-dramatic as I'd hope (why didn't you end up exploding the entire planet?), and beside unfortunately not getting anything special like maybe a colored mode, or free roam mode after completing the game, I did have fun with Hatred, and had a few good laughs at how ridiculous this parody-game was. I would probably wait for the game to go on sale if you're considering purchasing it though, because with it's length and lack of content personally I don't think it's worth the $20 price mark, but the satisfying gunplay, movement and sense of panic justify this being a good game.

P.S. Never ever drive in this game, the car physics are basically broken they're so glitchy.

    Meh, get boring very quick...

The violence is also pretty minor considering...

Honestly, if you just made the villain somebody "possessed by demons", or something equally dumb, I don't think the controversy would even be a thing. It's just cause the bad guy is human....

The game is largely a frenzied isometric twin stick shooter that looks exceptional with a gritty noire backdrop and solid visuals. The gameplay mechanics operate very well but everything becomes somewhat tedious after an hour as you're essentially just shooting anybody and everybody in the same mundane fashion and performing the same executions over and over. The game is short and the levels look far too similar.

It's also a very challenging title which isn't really a negative but the difficulty can often frustrate and if you fail a level at any time; you have to go back to the start of it. You can however earn a respawn token depending on secondary objectives which is mainly down to performing a certain amount of executions - this however is a bit of a chore and most of the time you'd rather just restart than try to earn a respawn as the execution cutsenes look the same and just kill the flow.

Overall; Hatred is a very impressively looking title that lacks any real substance. The gameplay mechanics are fantastic but the lack of depth and the bland structure leave the product lacking. It'll only take a few hours to finish but you may even be bored long before then. If you are interested in the game and are willing to spend the asking price; by all means give it a try but with the Steam Sale around the corner; interested parties may want to hold on to their money for something else.

It does fit the game - and while the performance seems not to be fully optimal - it runs good enough.

But beyond all the media scandal about it - what is that game actually about?

It is a twin stick shooter with very little story and immersion. The cheese in the dialogue might be humor or just bad writing. The AI is about as good as any twin stick shooter from over a decade ago. There is little variety in gameplay and had that game not focused so much on being such a scandalous title with its semi serious aesthetics ... it would be one twin stick shooter among countless - probably forgotten in less than half a year.

So from what i have seen - the game needs to make people angry about its content - it literally requires the media to make a fuss about it - because without all the fuss ... it has very little to offer. I daresay many people will only try this game out because "it is so wrong...".

In terms of more objective carnage .... GTA V probably is much more distressing and disturbing. After all ... in Hatred you need to kill people to make a progress. In GTA - you tend to cause carnage just for fun - it does not help you in your mission - in fact it usually rather makes things harder.

The camera/controls are atrocious. Running around in spots that are pitch black, and running into unseen scenery gets really annoying when getting shot at.

To be honest, I've seen worse. The most gruesome thing that happens is when you blow someone's head off with a shotgun. The main protagonist has NO backstory, NO character and NO personality. He doesn't even have a name. The people in this game are basically there just to be killed. They might as well be dummies for you to shoot.
The game itself is decent. But there are some flaws that make it pretty hard to recommend. Most of the time you will be shot by enemies that are off-screen, the execution animations will get boring pretty fast, cars can and will one-hit kill you, and on top of that cars take 3-4 shots to ignite.
The missions, while fun and open, are repetitive. It's basically the same "Kill X people" thing over and over in different areas. Also, when you die, two things will happen:
1: If you have respawn tokens, you will respawn close to where you were killed and all your progress in the mission will be saved
2: If you don't have respawn tokens, you will start the mission all over again.
How do you get respawn tokens? By completing side missions. Most of them are pretty easy and simple.
One last thing. This game is not being offensive to pass a message, or even just for the sake of being offensive. It's offensive so it can get free advertisement. Rockstar did it with GTA too. I'm not saying that it's bad, im just pointing it out
Overall, if you can look past all the flaws, it's a fun and enjoyable game. Probably even worth a seven or an eight if all the flaws are fixed.

Control curve. Hero merges with the environment in aiming mode. We need a laser sight, meaningful purpose, plot. Must be able to blend in with the crowd. Destruction of objects should be meaningful - to cut off the connection, turn off the electricity to destroy the way into town. The destruction of the city should be placed in a sandbox.

What it is now - boring. This is not yet the game.

The executions and brutality in the game are by no means extraordinary or particularly gruesome. Anybody who's ever played Soldier of Fortune 2 or seen a Mortal Kombat finishing move knows that this game is, in comparison, barely even graphic.

If you were hoping for the isometric shooter to end all isometric shooters or for the one game that redefines gore and damage models in video games, you will be sorely disappointed. If you are content with some (ironically overplayed) angsty monologues, a tough but mechanically mediocre shooter and some execution scenes that quickly lose their bite, despite (or because of) ridiculous amounts of blood, pick this up on a Steam sale.

I don't know what to think about Hatred's plot: I wondered before playing it, and I wonder even now after I completed it, what really pushed a man to cross the limit of tolerability and misanthropy to the point where The Antagonist pushed himself. The Antagonist's imaginary reference is clear: long hair, black trench coat, combat boots... and late 1990s don't seem that far anymore. But although aesthetic appearance, I don't think The Antagonist has much to share with a class or group of individuals. His hatred transcends ethnicity, gender and social status. He's too old to take refuge in teenage nihilism and has no problem in triggering an atomic explosion that will certainly kill those who dress and think like him, without discriminating anyone. No, it's not that easy to understand. And I wouldn't bet much on psychopathy, because if you think that you necessarily have to be a psychopath to kill people without batting an eyelid, obviously you've never heard about soldiers... or mobsters. I think that, in the end, in The Antagonist's heart, probably there is really room only for hatred and disgust. Simply this. Openness to interpretation and lack of information about the character's past and motivations have clearly been one of the strengths of the game's charm. That's for sure and it worked.

So what works in Hatred's gameplay? The first element is the environmental destructibility, phenomenal to say the least: 90% of in-game structures are completely destructible. It's possible to literally open a gap, digging and demolishing layers of building's walls one after the other, with an heavy machine gun. And talking about shooting, it must be said that Hatred has very, very, solid and valid shoot 'em up mechanics. Aiming with shoulder allows to extend range of fire to hit the farthest targets. The game succeeds in being satisfying and fun, it hardly become monotonous if you don't die or repeat the same level too many times. The difficulty of the game is indeed quite high, even at standard level, especially in the second part when units of better armed and more aggressive enemies arrive. Performing executions – the only way to restore health – is not only satisfying, it becomes necessary. Strange how this latter merit have been exalted by only few: I mean it's a video game, what should be if not synonymous of good challenge? There are however things that are not good in Hatred. The movement, for example, both in contextual actions and in running or shooting is a bit woody. In most chaotic sections, it can generate problems, where freedom of movement and immediacy are essential. I liked the particular choice in the color scale, similar to Sin City's one, but it's true that it can confuse the player sight, bringing to highlight targets with red borders using a specific command. Sometimes, moreover, enemies' attack area tends to cover a too long range: literally, you can't see who is shooting you, even aiming with the shoulder. Driving system is just sketched and as the most liar game director in the industry would say: "It just works", but nothing more. A.I. is perhaps the most deficient side of the game: it happens that enemies remain to wait for the next move of the player, doing nothing, or that get stuck between walls, objects or doors. If solved these problems, the game would have really shine.

To be an isometric game, Hatred really has nice visuals and makes good use of Unreal Engine 4, even with some great particle effects. I enjoyed the soundtrack – sometimes a bit metal, sometimes a bit dark ambient – and tracks like "Overkill" and "It's time".

Finally, a final thought comes. The most common criticism to the game is: "It wants to be polemical, but it's not polemical" almost as if critics wanted to convince more themselves that those who read the review, almost as if they wanted to turn off a fire that, if evidently they wanted to turn off, it's because it was burning. And Hatred burned. The truth is that Hatred, in many cases, has not been evaluated for what it is: a video game. And let it be know – by me, a realist about today's video game reality, not interested in lying to you with pretended optimism – in the end Hatred didn't even remotely hurt the world of video games as much as the "casual revolution" did (Nintendo Wii, Wii Sports etc.), since 2005 symbol of what really ruined an entire industry, making it richer with cosmic void. Hatred has a reason to exist, so target centered, Destructive Creations. I prefer much more games like Hatred generating controversy because of extreme violence – and give a reason to failed attorneys like pitiful Jack Thompson to open their useless mouths – than games generating controversy because of damned microtransactions and predatory monetization practices.

Yes. I choose Hatred. And you?

Let us not talk about the game setting and the whole controversy, although I would like to do it.
Let us talk about the gameplay.
The gameplay.. The very monotone gameplay, the main goals of literally all missions are "kill civilians","kill all soldiers/police officers" while going from A to the point B, first not bad and at least a new setting but it gets boring and tiring very fast.

Don't get me wrong, you can release your inner little psycho, which is awesome. But it's so repetitive, it doesn't even have a lot of missions or at least some different, like one in the desert against some bikers or in a little town in the middle of nowhere,
no most of the missions are in some kinds of suburbs.
You can also drive some vehicles, but all of them are kind of useless.

More weapons would have been nice, or at least more ammunition for the special weapons like the flamethrowers.

You can destroy literally every house and every object, it looks awesome due to the "over the top" physics for explosions, it has a better destroyable environment than some games which are promoted for exactly that feature.
The game itself looks also pretty good, thanks to the Unreal Engine 4.

The "666" joke in the last mission is not funny neither is the "16,66" price.
The game is not worth "16,66", buy it for about "6,66".

HATRED has a superb art style - mostly black & white with red (BLOOD), orange (explosions) and red/blue (cop car cherries) - I love it!

You go around killing - it's a twin-stick shooter, so what did you expect? HATRED is a very difficult game: you are constantly swarmed by enemies (cops shoot back, it takes place is the US and not the UK), most of which can shoot you before they come into view with dead eye precision. The only way to regain health is by performing an execution - but they trigger randomly and you have no influence on it.
The gaming press ran the game down because it's politically incorrect (although in 2020 U.S. now that might change) and all victims are innocent. Unfortunately the press is incapable of disregarding politics (which is why THE LAST OF US II got all 100%s and 10 out of 10s and this has a 43 Metacritic score). HATRED is challenging and it is fun. Is it the greatest game ever made? Far from it. But for a twin-stick shooter - what can you expect? I love the art style in particular, far away from the bright neon colored comic book graphics as in DIABLO 3.
HATRED is the IDEAL game for blowing off steam!

I live in Australia and it's unobtainable to get this game legally from steam cause it's banned in Australia. (Not that it's mention on the list of banned games in Australia wiki). I, however. Bought it from D.C's website when it was available for pre-order with a key on release. Moving on.

    What is HATRED?
Take RWS's 1997 Postal and make it balls up the wall ultra-violent where your goal is to kill everyone in your way (than yourself), with close-up final blows, throat-slitting, and head stomping.

If you like Postal, you might like this. Altho Postal2 is more of a black comedy, HATRED was made for shock value. And people were shocked.

I've enjoyed this game. Finally a game, with over-the-top ultra-violence that no one asked for but needed.
But it does sometimes get a little boring. And this is coming from a guy who has 500+ hours in Postal 2. What can I say? I like the mods people make.

HATRED also has some mods. Some are great. Like 1.666.

I play hatred now every once in a while. The last recorded time I played it was Oct 2020 so it was pretty recent.

    Do I recommend HATRED?
    Yes.

Do I recommend paying full price?
    No, wait for a sale.

This is easily one of the best isometric shooters ever made, which ironically got the hatred of dumb people that took it too seriously. GTA, Call of Duty, Battlefield, and a lot of other very popular games are murder simulators just like this one but i doubt these smooth brains ever thought of that.
Its too short and the black and white gets old fast, if it were a filter you could turn

    * it’s challenging game if you’re looking for one for a Under $10 this is a game for you * it has a lot of the same physics
As The original postal form 1997 and postal redux form 2016 Cons * Bad consoles in the beginning it takes a while to get used to them * it focuses more on the violence then the story which I don’t like because I like the story but it makes the game more interesting
    * it has controller support which I like a lot but it feels really bad one playing the game on the controller I just recommend using the mouse and keyboard when playing this game Overall I give it a 6.5/10 because it is far from perfect and no game is perfect and destructive creations is making great games like IS Defense which I really enjoy a lot and Daymare 1998 which I heard it’s a good game and they are going to make and release next month is War Mongrels which I’m hyped about but I see why hatred got it I adults only but at the same time postal form 1997 got a m from the ESRB and I highly recommend the game at the end of the day because if you like poster you will love hatred

Hatred isn’t half as provocative as moralists claim: it doesn’t emphasize the act of aggression; it cares only about the number of victims. Executions are carried out with about as much emotion as stomping on a Goomba in Mario game. [Sept 2015, p.71]
