One Piece Odyssey walks the line between being a great anime adaptation and an engaging video game admirably. It feels happy, bright, and true to the tone and content of source material, and it succeeds in making you feel close to the characters as you join them on their grand adventure. Listening to Sanji and Zoro bicker while Luffy stuffs his face with food is essential One Piece. There’s nothing more iconically One Piece than that, and Odyssey nails it.

It was the surprises that kept me invested throughout, and I'm certainly not going to spoil them here. What I can say is it left me with a refreshing RPG that may not revolutionize the genre, but I think starts the year off right for either or both RPG and One Piece fans.

One Piece Odyssey is a passion-filled installment of the story of Monkey D. Luffy. Even though these games are usually a recap or summary of events, this one goes beyond. It rescues the original tale but adapts it to a new video game, taking advantage of more recent platforms. Odyssey is entertaining, fresh, and charismatic.

If you were afraid of One Piece Odyssey being a typical anime licensed game trying to cash in on the name, don't be. The combat blends in Monster Hunter Stories 2-like rock paper scissors mechanics, positioning, One Piece abilities, and more with traditional turn-based mechanics to be more interesting than I expected. It looks great and has brilliant music. It has a few pacing issues and too many loading screens holding it back, but is an easy recommendation right now on PC with a good port.

Cozy, meandering fun for One Piece fans, but swabbies should set sail from other ports.

The game contains challenging battles to match the RPG genre (even most of them were pretty easy), a graphic that can catch the essence of the Anime's exaggerated expression and the story of the past that the Straw Hat Pirates of present look back on. However, the worst conveniences can make you quit the game before you even experience them.
  7. One Piece Odyssey is the best One Piece game I have played and it successfully presents the features of the JRPG genre to the player. The game misses the chance of getting better scores because of problems with story tempo and pointless stories that are stretched out in vain.

As far as games in the series go, One Piece Odyssey is one of the best if you don't mind the narrative issues. I wasn't expecting it, but it ticks all the boxes that a solid JRPG needs.

Pros: Nice looking modern graphics (rare for jrpg). Character and enemy models look great! Really clean and graphically engaging ui's across the board. Heavily voice acted if you are a fan of the show.

Cons: No autosave (its 2023 this was sorted over a decade ago). Rpg combat mechanics are basic, I dont think there is a way to lose battles so far, perhaps engaging for people new to the rpg turn based genre? A hard mode would have been nice.

World traversal is a bit of a slog mechanically: a jump mechanic that has no point to it (invisible walls, cant jump off platforms etc), lengthy/pointless back and forth fetch quests etc, character while running still feels slow paced.

The game is silly and childish, putting giant icons on every collectible item, completely breaking the immersion of exploration, the combat despite being fun is extremely easy, the script is weak with uncharismatic characters, the soundtrack is generic and I say that with heaviness in my heart from being a longtime fan. This game is an insult to my intelligence and not fun. Full Review »
