  • Summary: Project Wingman is a flight action game that lets you take the seat of advanced fighter jets and become a true ace. Fight in various missions and gamemodes ranging from intense aerial dogfights to large scale ground assault in an alternate scorched earth setting.

Project Wingman may well be the most frustrating game I’ve ever unabashedly loved by making me feel like the hotshot pilot I’ve never been, and the only price I have to pay is a little bit of my sanity every time I die and remember that there aren’t any checkpoints.

With a variety of missions to choose from at each stage and in-depth customization options, Project Wingman also tests the player’s intelligence in creating synergistic builds and risk-reward assessments. Aside from a multiplayer mode, which this game sadly lacks, this is one of the best infinitely replayable jet-fighter game modes I’ve ever seen.

I think I’ve sunk about 250 hours into Ace Combat 7. Most of that was spent just endlessly replaying the campaign with as many different aircraft as were available. I’m not sure yet if I’m going to play Project Wingman for quite as long, but given how I’ve lost sleep all week just so I could play one more mission, I suspect I might come close.

Project Wingman delivers exciting aerial combat and an interesting campaign, though it won't impress those looking for a hardcore flight sim.

Project Wingman is not scared of being the indie Ace Combat copy, and it is that brave approach by the developers to replicate something they enjoy that makes it a recommendation for anyone who loves taking to the skies.

Overall, Project Wingman, or dare I say Ace Combat 8: Oh no not more rockets should absolutely fill the boots of those who have been looking for an arcade aerial combat game. Specifically of the Ace Combat genre.

Outside of VR, Project Wingman really is the Ace Combat spinoff fans have always dreamed of. If you just have a gamepad and want to feel like you’re in Top Gun without needing to learn aerodynamics, you’ll have a lot of fun. In VR it’s still playable with a gamepad, but that ruins the immersion for the most part. Project Wingman is still a good game, but the shaky VR support drags everything down significantly.

I backed this in Kickstarter ages ago, and every penny I helped put into this labour of love was well deserved. If you're a fan of Ace CombatI backed this in Kickstarter ages ago, and every penny I helped put into this labour of love was well deserved. If you're a fan of Ace Combat or HAWX, you'll get your 25USD worth very very easily. The planes handle like a dream, the visuals are stunning, and the story is coherent and rather engaging. The only downside I had was just parched out as of 1.04, so I'll give this game a perfect score. Expand

The game is a little rough around the edges at times (the end product is still over and above, considering its dev team size), overall it plays beautifully and is extremely fun.

Better than Ace Combat 7 and nearly as good as Ace Combat 6. Completed the campaign in about 12 hours, but that's only about half the content. You can replay with modifiers and you'll need to play more than once through to unlock all the jets. Combat is great with a good variety of enemies to fight on land, sea and air - including airships like the one in Ace Combat 6. Story is neat and has good banter between the pilots as you're flying.
TLDR - If you like Ace Combat get this

Project wingman scratches an itch that I've had for VR flight action since it was announced for PS4 Ace Combat. This is a full fat VR gameProject wingman scratches an itch that I've had for VR flight action since it was announced for PS4 Ace Combat. This is a full fat VR game made by 2 people with a solid but not groundbreaking story and fun characters and boss fights. Graphically, this game is very impressive for such a small effort.

There are some bugs, that the developers are scrambling to fix as I type this review. This is not a perfect product, and could have spent another month or so on bug fixes. However, the bugs are non game effecting and did not detract from the experience in any meaningful way.

I'll summarize like this: Ace Combat 7, which heavily inspired this game, is like a ribeye at a 5 star restaurant. It's immaculate, made by the chef who's been making it for years and has it to a cold science of spices and flavors. Project Wingman is a New York Strip from your favorite hometown diner. It's not as perfect and immaculate, but it comes with a care and warmth that can only come from a passion for the product. Easy recommendation for any fan of the genre.
