Sure, "Ace 3" has better graphics, and sure, there might be a little more variety in the missions. But the laughable challenge level in "Ace 3" makes it hard to recommend it over its older brother. [Nov 2001, p.38]
Ace Combat 2 possesses some of the cleanest polygons ever to grace the PlayStation. This game possesses fully rendered levels ranging from submarine infested oceans, to anti-aircraft plastered canyon trenches.
I was truly amazed by how much fun this game actually is. The planes all look amazing, the action is exciting, and it is an admirable attempt to bring high-flying antics to the Playstation... That said, it's the very simplicity of the gameplay that scuppers the game, as it is at times far too easy.
A big improvement over Air Combat visually and gameplay wise. The core mechanic is still the same and the way the missions play out are the same, but it's cool that you get to decide at one point which path to take when it comes to the missions. The AI surprised me for a 90's game when I realised that when you pursue them, specific aircraft such as the Su-35 can pull a cobra manoeuvre just to get behind you in a dogfight. Graphics wise, the scenery of the missions and the colour palette improved drastically and adds character to the missions and the atmosphere. Very good sequel to Air Combat, would recommend playing.
SummaryWe've devised a weapon that's deadlier than a smart bomb. It's called a smart pilot. Now, Ace Combat 2 pits you against a whole squadron of them - 3-D polygonal jet jocks that maneuver like the real deal, turning every scorching sortie and dogfight into a kill-or-be-killed situation. With nearly double the missions of its predecessor, yo...
