  • Summary: Delve into a role-playing game of horror, loss and madness set in the strange worlds of HP Lovecraft. Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones offers a mix of rich role-playing and turn-based tactical combat, represented in an illustrative visual style. Can you find salvation in a dead world?

Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones is a fantastic RPG. The story is interesting, the characters are unique, the quests are varied, and the systems run deep. There are a variety of different ways to play this game and I can’t wait to jump back in and explore some new paths. This is one nightmare I highly recommend.

I enjoyed every moment of playing Stygian: Reign of Old Ones. There may be questionable decisions in including such a wide variety of mythos creatures in a single release, but the decision to set the game basically after the end of the world (as far as Arkham is concerned) is a fresh take. Stygian oozes atmosphere, craft, and effort. I love it, it’s great, and you should play it.

Stygian isn’t that long as it takes some 15-20 hours to see its horrors through, depending on your willingness to search every nook and cranny of its warped world, and the story paves the way for more adventures in the doomed Arkham. However, the replay value is strong due to different character archetypes and what gameplay options they will bring along, adding to the multiple ways to approach quests. In many ways, the game was an eye-opening experience. It sets the bar high what comes to meaningful content and depicting an atmospheric game world and also reminds of what is still possible to achieve in its well-worn genre when given enough effort, heart and thought.

Faithfully adapted, bristling with depth, beautifully written and gorgeous to look at, Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones is a fantastic role-playing game that’s hampered by a frustrating and tedious combat system that is sure to turn many players away in the early goings.

Notwithstanding little issues here and there, this is an RPG sure to be loved by every fan of HP Lovecraft. For everyone else, it’s a serious challenge comparable to reading the master’s work for the first time.

Although multiple issues persist throughout the title, such as the aforementioned tedious combat and sub-par pathfinding, the quality of the game's writing (when all the words are spelled correctly) and interwoven Lovecraft stories are enough to keep any fan of CRPGs interested throughout two or three separate playthroughs.

Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones has an interesting art direction and a good Lovecraftian inspiration, but seems to be split in half between its nice all-around RPG mechanics and a slow and not very engaging turn-based strategic combat.

Make no mistake, this is a true Lovecraftian cRPG experience. In every scene, every little item, every piece of dialogue you can see the loveMake no mistake, this is a true Lovecraftian cRPG experience. In every scene, every little item, every piece of dialogue you can see the love the team has put into making this game. Let's not forget about the music.

The logic behind the combat is also different than what we are used to. You are not expected to kill every enemy you come across. In fact, more often than not you are discouraged from fighting at all. Most of the time, you can just aim to survive long enough for an escape route to open in the combat arena and make a progressive escape. This gives you the same amount of experience you would get if you had beaten all the enemies. The only reward in killing everyone is a little bit more loot that you get in the end.

I already know that I will be playing the game again soon after I finish it. I cannot wait to see what would have happened if I played a different character and made different choices.

We definitely need more games like this.

Fantastic art style, music and gameplay.

Lots of variations in character building and combat.

Simply the most detailed lovecraftian horror ever!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Could have easily been one of the greatest cRPGs of 2019 if it wasn't for its incomplete main quest, regardless of it being buggy.

    The good:

    - Amazing story set in a HP Lovecraft universe with references to pop fiction.
    - Beautiful art and visual effects..
    - Eerie music and special effects
    - Good combat system (inspired by Fallout and Arcanum)
    - Interesting dialogue options depending on your character skills.
    - Includes some frightening scenes later in the game .. it's unique for a 2D horror RPG.

    The bad:

    - Some areas of the game contain horrendous bugs that make the game unplayable unless you keep reloading, hoping that it won't crash the game..

    - You only get around 40 to 60 percent of the game quests combined with an incomplete ending.

Would have given it 10/10 if it wasn't for the incomplete quests, despite how buggy it is. It is a must play for Lovecraft fans.

Bad: primitive inparty characters and relations, broken ballans, railway storyline, useless craft
Terrible: all about tech.part and mechanics realisation. This is about realisation of the saves system, boring battles, megatonns of bugs, unevident mechanics. The worst at all its GUI, it realy scarest part of the game. And finaly- game ending, it looks like a book without a last 150 pages of the novel.

System requirements are peace of joke! Bad graphics and design, annoying music and sound, no optimization, no balance, no storyline - just bunch of stupid quests. Gameplay? Just an extremely bad copy of xcom-style battle system.
And, the key fact - there is no Lovecraft's atmosphere!
