  1. The Lost Crown stands head and shoulders above most of the adventure game offerings that have come our way over the last few years and frankly I was saddened when it finally ended.
  2. So... what's my final take on The Lost Crown then? More ambitious than Dark Fall, that's for sure. And quite a bit longer. Scariest thing I've played in a long time, maybe even since Realms of the Haunting.
  3. All in all I was fairly impressed with The Lost Crown. A deep story and a disturbingly creepy score put this title high on my list of creepy adventure titles and of adventure titles in general.
  4. The Lost Crown is like watching The Ring, only longer. Technically it's just average, but the atmosphere is dense and haunting. Fans of atmospheric horror games should definitely take a look.
  5. The Lost Crown has a great, creepy atmosphere, and the presentation is one of a kind. Dark shadows, spectral figures, near constant mist, and chilling sounds are bound to give most folks an uneasy feeling about playing the game at night in a dimly lit room.
  6. Atmosphere. Jonathan Boakes is a master at creating atmosphere. With lovely yet creepy visual settings, a story with secrets and ghosts, spine-tingling ambient sounds, The Lost Crown presents a tale sure to attract and basically please most adventure game players. But is a spooky atmosphere enough?
  7. While The Lost Crown isn't perfect, thanks to the flaws mentioned previously, if you like your point and click adventures then it could be a worth addition to your collection.

The Lost Crown is a solid ghost-hunting adventure with well-designed puzzles and storyline. The visual design is original. both photographic backgrounds and well used colouring add to the game's eerie atmosphere. There are many flaws, though: you can't skip the dialogue, there's a lot of frustrating walking to and fro etc. But even with its many flaws The Lost Crown is well worth the money. [Feb 2009]
  9. More than a good game – which it actually isn't – The Lost Crown is an experience not to be missed by those who have a penchant for the supernatural.
  10. In conclusion, The Lost Crown: A Ghost-hunting Adventure is an almost dead genre on the PC, however for fans of this genre, this is definitely a worthy purchase and will keep you enthralled with it's spooky story and strange settings. The gameplay is at times dated but if you can get past, you'll have an enjoyable time.

A game of wildly varying inconsistencies. It's got an interesting, lengthy plot, conventional but ultimately well-designed puzzles, and a great atmosphere thanks to its black-and-white art style, use of real world photos as backdrops, and solid, often unearthly sound effects and tracks.
  12. The Lost Crown: A Ghost-hunting Adventure is a good adventure game, but too many conventional elements and low production values keep it from being a great one.
  13. Ultimately, it’s the setting of The Lost Crown, between the brilliant sound design and the superb art direction, that will give you the most pleasure, and a great deal of praise for these elements is due the game’s creator, Jonathan Boakes.
  14. The Lost Crown: A Ghost-Hunting Adventure is a classic adventure game with a gripping storyline, plenty of puzzles and a number of interesting ideas, which always revolve around the devices that you can use to detect the presence of ghosts. Unfortunately, the game is marred by a series of problems far from negligible.
  15. This game can create a unique atmosphere, which can lure the player, but there are too many weak points which destroy the ambitions of The Lost Crown: A Ghost-Hunting Adventure in terms of simply being a good game. Fans of horror and creeps should at least consider it worth one try, to all the other gamers: Don't even think about it.
  16. The Lost Crown – A Ghosthunting Adventure is an adventure game the opinions of which will differ. Spooky Atmosphere is great due to the sound design and the thrilling story. But given the stale technology with really poor character animations and the idiosyncratic look, players of graphic delights such as The Book of Unwritten Tales will be difficult to convince to this independent adventure.

Between the scares, your interactions with living characters are hampered by poor voice acting, an inability to skip conversations, and constant dialogue sync issues. [June 2008, p.71]
  18. I think the game would have been much better off concentrating on two or three well developed ghost stories rather than the dozen or so passably interesting ones that are in the game now.

The puzzles aren't that bad either, gently ramping up from fairly easy to mentally taxing. [Oct 2008, p.114]

It's really hard to put into words how excruciatingly bad the acting is, but the phrase "unnecessary pauses" comes to mind. [Nov 2008, p.77]

A lot of good ideas that are, sadly, very poorly executed. [Dec 2008, p.88]
  22. To the less than fanatical, the drawn-out story, poor pacing, terrible script, crappy acting, plethora of typos, repetition and badly designed game engine will see to it that the most chilling prospect of The Lost Crown will be the thought of sitting through it.
  23. From the sleep-inducing gameplay to the wooden dialogue and stale story, the whole project feels phoned in Hunting ghosts has never been so bad.

Fantastic for adventure game lovers! Amazing story, VERY long and immersive. Beautiful backgrounds and interesting use of black and white. Fantastic for adventure game lovers! Amazing story, VERY long and immersive. Beautiful backgrounds and interesting use of black and white. The only drawback keeping this from a perfect 10 is the poor character models/animations. If you love a good, spooky story and are an adventure game fan, this game is perfect for you. Full Review »
