VA-11 Hall-A is a funny, thought-provoking, and sometimes tragic work of art, with truly original gameplay and a beautiful aesthetic unlike anything else on the market.

Listening to well written dialogue and mixing drinks while meeting interesting characters - this is a little storytelling gem.

VA-11 HALL-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action excels through relatable characters and stories that are worth listening to, even if its gameplay aspects can appear to be non-existent or tedious.

It's a really highly polished experience with a lot of secrets to be found, coupled with a story that pulls you along with strong characters.

VA-11 HALL-A is inherently flawed yet it's still a wonderful personal cyberpunk tale. Even with the writing being lackluster at times, I find its cast to be pleasantly unforgettable. I often think about them, Glitch City, and my dreams of the future living through its soundtrack as I listen to it outside of the game. It was worth diving in and have a fascinating peek into that view. And I'd love to return to it anytime.

This one did. Occasionally, once a week or so, I recall something about VA-11 Hall-A: be it deeply human characters, involving dialog, compelling art and character design or magical synthwave soundtrack.

For what it is - more of a comic with a mini game attached than a conventional video game - Cyberpunk Bartender Action is a moving and soothing story with an abrupt and anticlimactic ending - just like in real life.

It's gotten to the point where I think most visual novels can't even be considered games any more. What with how few choices newer visual novels actually give you, you might as well go read an actual book instead. Even story is often thrown out the window in modern visual novels as it's easier to just make a fanservice showcase that caters to a bunch of fetishes using generic character archetypes. Needless to say, the genre has gone downhill.

However, for every trend that exists, there will always be exceptions. This game is one such exception. VA-11 Hall-A (or Vallhalla) isn't a perpetrator of any of the tropes I've previously mentioned. It allows player choice, but not in the blatant "option 1 or option 2" way that visual novels usually do. In Vallhalla, as you probably know, you are a bartender. Thus, the difference in events in the game depends on the drinks you serve. Most of the time, it literally depends on how drunk or sober each given person is when they leave the bar. Certain events also differ based on the amount of money you make each day.

As for the story; it's very... real. Well, as real as a cyberpunk dystopian setting can be. By "real" I mean each character (even the minor ones) has their own story, goals, motivations, etc. Some of these stories are uplifting and funny, while others are quite gritty and depressing, and some are vague and mysterious, leaving some to the imagination. And you may be thinking "Of course they all have stories. That's a given!" While this IS true, the depth of these stories comes from the fact that even if 2 characters are never in the bar at the same time as each other (therefore, they never have screentime together) you can piece together events they are both involved in using info from conversations had with each of them individually. For example, X character makes an offhanded remark about somebody he hired to work for him, a couple days later; Y character tells you about some guy who hired them to do some strange work for them. You can also affect these events yourself. Example: X character passes out drunk, preventing them from going to work tomorrow, and the next day, their boss comes into the bar and complains about a certain employee not coming to work. The connections between characters do get much deeper than this however, these are just a couple basic examples.

The gameplay isn't really deserving of too much praise. After all, you're just mixing drinks. But this IS still a visual novel so compared to the rest of the genre, the gameplay in Vallhalla isn't that bad.

The soundtrack is hit or miss, it really depends on what kind of music you're into. Personally I really like the music. It's not something I would listen to just for the sake of it, but I'm definitely going to be listening to this while doing things like homework from now on.

I got this game on sale, but honestly, it's worth the full price.

I feel bad because there is a lot of quality for a indi game but this is more of a story than a game and there are better options if you are looking for a story more complex, quality, etc.

If you like sitting there reading and clicking now and then for story that develops on its own you are going to love this, if you are looking for a real game look somewhere else.
