Spider-Man is a splendidly tuned action game with a stunning story, great action and gameplay mechanisms that won’t bore you for a moment. You should not miss out on this trip among comic heroes. It's a bomb! [Issue#289]

From the story to the exploration to the combat to seemingly endless upgrades, Spider-Man is packed full of things worth doing and that are fun to do. Insomniac Games has made it seem effortless with the way they can bring this character to life in all the ways a video game can. Spider-Man is a great superhero game, a great PS4 exclusive, but most importantly a great game all its own.

Whether you’re just swinging around the city searching for the many landmarks and collectibles, or fighting crime by flexing Spidey’s amazing super-powers and gadgets, Marvel’s Spider-Man is a really a pleasure to play at all times. I can say with absolute confidence that this is by far the best superhero game I ever played.

There are not enough words to describe how beautiful the game looks, or how despite the huge number of alternate costumes you have access too, nothing feels as right as the new suit Insomniac created. I could spin webs about the excellent boss fights that liter the back half of the game, and how they manage to test your skills without resorting to just packing the screen full of enemies and story-wise. I could do all these things, but I won’t because you need to play this and experience it for yourself. Again, with no qualifiers, Marvel’s Spider-Man is the best game you will play this year. It most certainly has been the best one I have.

It’s hard to fault Marvel’s Spider-Man in a lot of areas as Insomniac has taken their game to the next level. As a developer, they have gone from strength to strength and Spider-Man is a culmination of their past hits. There’s a stunning verticality that compliments the game’s watertight mechanics and, despite the literal boundaries, still makes the city seem boundless. If you’re a Marvel die-hard, there’s enough fanfare here to sink a ship as Spider-Man emerges as the new gold standard. Spider-Man is, without question, the best superhero game ever.

I can’t stop thinking about this game. If I’m not playing it, I want to be. The web-slinging is brilliant, the combat is deceptively deep and diverse, and there are a million things to do. The story is emotional, resonant, and teases fans of the series in countless ways. It’s one of the best looking games of the year, and honestly, one of the best games I’ve ever played, full stop.

Spider-Man exceeded my expectations in every single way. It has its low points, but they are so minor, they become insignificant in the face of its many positive points. Spider-Man is the PS4's second system seller in 2018.

Marvel’s Spider-Man is one of the best exclusive games for the PS4 and one of the best games in 2018 so far. Its world has managed to surprise us due to the huge amount of content it possesses as well as because of its funny and deep gameplay. Insomniac Games has used their power responsibly while translating their vision of Spider-Man, and they’ve created his largest and most detailed adventure to date. They’ve taken lessons from their previous action-adventures, along with recent successful franchises in the super hero genre, showcasing what’s possible not only for Spider-Man, but for all comic book characters in this generation of games.

Marvel’s Spider-Man is the best gaming representation of the legendary comic book character to date. Insomniac nailed the smartass tone that has been his calling card better than anyone else and the core action is faster here, with a solid blend of combat and world exploration. It looks great and controls like a dream. Spider-Man has had his troubles in gaming, but Insomniac’s effort checks all the boxes for a top-shelf Spidey experience and delivers a solid storyline that brings its own unique universe to the mix to tell an all-new tale that keeps you engaged and adds some gravitas to everything you do.

Marvel's Spider-Man does what a lot of good art does, which is examine techniques and concepts that work well, and then blend and refine them to create something unique to itself and possibly greater. I've made this point before: Art and artists have built on and inspired each other since the beginning of time. So yes, I've heard and seen the Spidey/Arkham hot takes, and I ended up not caring at all because at no point did I forget I was playing a Spider-Man experience. I was too busy swinging around in Manhattan, with buildings whipping by as I tailed a police pursuit, thinking about how right it all felt.

This game does for Spider-Man what the Arkham series did for Batman. Immensely satisfying movement system, excellent combat, fast pace, superb visuals and wealth of side activities converge to bring a wonderful experienced, diluted only by some minor missteps in the story and a couple of stealth sequences where you control supporting characters instead of Spidey. There's no doubt that Insomniac Games has brought us one of the best games in the PlayStation 4 catalog, bringing back to the videogame scene one of the most famous superheroes of all time in the epic and glorious way it deserves. Although, the game has some flaws in certain aspects, this only leaves us wanting to see how they manage to overcome this result in a possible sequel, which will surely improve the experience of this great game, in which Spidey showed off like never before.

I’ve 100 percent completed the game and unlocked the platinum trophy, but I can’t stop swinging through the city and saving people. By the end, it really is your city with your people to help, your landmarks to admire, your jungle to swing though. Thanks to its masterful sense of flow, knowing nods to the world of Marvel and refreshing sense of mission variety, there was rarely a moment in its 20 plus hour playtime where we didn’t have a sh*t-eating grin plastered across our faces. Quite simply, it’s consistently a joy to play. And while it may not push interactive entertainment into a bold new realm, it’s a superhero sim that fulfills your every web-slinging fantasy.

With the speed, agility and proportionate strength of an arachnid, Insomniac brings back the beloved super hero with a game that lacks novelty, but shines in every aspect. Marvel's Spider-Man is amazing, spectacular, sensational and superior to any other wall-crawling, web-slinging video game.

Marvel’s Spider-Man mixes the prestige ambitions of a Sony exclusive with the hyperkinetic fun of a great superhero game. It’s not a pairing you’d expect to work, but it mostly does here, though some aspects of the open-world design, like repetitive side content, let down the overall package.

Swinging across Marvel’s version of Manhattan not only looks good thanks to the beautiful lighting and attention to detail, but it has never felt so good either, being a relaxing and peaceful experience. Unfortunately, nothing is without its faults, as controls can be a bit finicky, and like all open world games, you’ll find occasional graphical anomalies. That’s not mention the side quests are a little lacking. This seems like a perfect fit to tell stories of lesser known or lower profile Spider-Man villains, but among the various side quests in the campaign, there’s only one that fits the bill. Regardless, Insomniac Games perfectly captures Peter Parker’s comical bravado, all while establishing a world ripe for its own unique expansion. In the end, Marvel’s Spider-Man is the most realized Spider-Man game yet.

Marvel's Spider-Man is at once a fantastic action game, a dramatic story-driven adventure, and a love letter to fans of Marvel's ever-endearing wall-crawler. It's also one of the strongest titles in Insomniac Games' catalog, and will no doubt be counted not only among the best games of 2018, but also among the best PlayStation 4 exclusives ever released.

Insomniac Games takes Marvel's most popular character for a spin and the results are fantastic. The developer establishes its own Spider-Man with a unique supporting cast and a beautiful recreation of New York to play around in. This is an absolutely beautiful game, with solid combat and a great story. Most of all, it really sells the feeling of being Spider-Man. The gaming history of Spider-Man has been uneven, but this is an amazing entry in that history. Pun intended.

Ultimately, Marvel's Spider-Man is a must-buy, because no matter how you feel about our webbed superhero, this is just an insanely fun game to play, and it's so well put together. Just like the Arkham games did for Batman, this pretty much provides the definitive version of the Spider-Man universe outside of the comics, and leaves us begging to explore more of it in the inevitable sequel. Webslinging is bliss, combat is fantastic fun, and the extra content and collectibles are varied and infrequent enough not to overwhelm. What's more, the plot and characters are an unexpected surprise, with some fantastic performances that are genuinely touching. Marvel's Spider-Man is one of the best games of 2018 so far, and every PS4 owner will feel proud to own it as part of their library.
  55. With a cinematic story filled with personal drama, subversive twists and likeable characters, but set in a fantastical universe much more akin to the one seen in print, this is the best of Spidey's film and comic book iterations combined. But it's also a sensational game, blending open world acrobatics with more focused linear areas, and a well-realised protagonist with the freedom of fun upgrades and customisation.
  56. Sep 4, 2018

Marvel's Spider-Man does a spectacular job of making you feel like the ultimate Spider-Man. From swinging through the city at high speed to fighting off legions of enemies by zipping between them and pulling them into the air, its gameplay looks like a scene from the films. It's remarkably well realised in terms of its world, design, and even technically, with short loading times and a rock solid framerate even on the base PlayStation 4. If Spider-Man is your thing, then this is an essential purchase.

Spider-Man makes a huge comeback on the PlayStation 4. With an exclusive partnership between Sony, Marvel and Insomniac Games, your friendly neighborhood Spider-man got his strongest game since the release of Spider-Man 2 way back when.

Spider-Man is yet another outstanding title in Sony’s first party library. PS4 owners should not hesitate to snag it when it drops. The quality they put into these titles is impressive and Insomniac continues to prove they can deliver on big-budget titles. Even with its minor gripes I still thoroughly enjoyed my time with Spidey and the gang. Perhaps we will see another one in the years to come, but for now this is the best our web-slinger has been since the early days of the PS2 era.
  62. 90
Marvel’s Spider-Man isn’t innovating on the open-world genre, but Insomniac doubled down on creating a spectacular Spider-Man fantasy. It simply feels good to travel through Peter Parker’s New York as the webslinger, even if whatever Spidey-suit you choose is covering a competent and entirely expected open-world formula. Filled with more emotion, heart, and humanity than we’ve seen in superhero adventures before, Insomniac doesn’t need to reinvent the open-world wheel. Marvel’s Spider-Man embraces the man behind the mask and gives us the best interactive Spider-Man experience to date.

Marvel's Spider-Man for PS4 is a great way to experience the diverse and unique world of Spider-Man. The game looks amazing, it's well-written, funny and is absolute a pleasure to play. It is by far the best entry in the Spider-Man gaming franchise to date. This game has great depth and so many things to do, it will keep you occupied for a long while.

Marvel’s Spider-Man is charming and energetic, action-packed and surprisingly capable of tugging on your heart strings to deliver a one-two punch to the emotional gut. If you had to sum up Marvel’s Spider-Man in one word, nothing would be more apt than…amazing.

  67. Sep 4, 2018
    90
This version of Spider-Man is easily among the most fluent games of all time. This is partially because of the extremely smooth way you can swing around the city, but is also due to the way everything from the story to the combat comes together to form a cohesive and engaging whole. It's not a perfect game: There are a few boring segments throughout, some characters end up feeling a bit out of place and there's an unshakeable feeling that most of the main story has been seen before, but Insomniac still makes most of it work very, very well.
  68. Sep 4, 2018
    90
Minor shortcomings don't detract from Insomniac's achievement in creating a game that feels like an authentic interpretation of a beloved creation. The feeling of embodying Spidey and using his abilities is astonishing, and the time spent on exploring its major characters help make its story feel heartfelt, despite superhero bombast. There have been open-world Spider-Man games before, but none so riveting and full of personality, none that explore and do justice to this many facets of the universe. Insomniac has created a superior Spider-Man experience that leaves a lasting impression, one that has you longing for just one more swing around New York City, even after the credits roll.
  69. Sep 4, 2018
    90
Marvel's Spider Man for PS4 is a true must-have for the super hero's fans with its open world and the freedom it allows. We would have loved a bit more variety among quests and a better stealth system as the one with Mile Morales and Mary-Jane feel so 2005.
  70. Sep 4, 2018
    88
Probably the best Spider-Man game ever done, but still far from perfect. Insomniac has made an excellent sandbox but its repetitiveness and some technical issues make this game a bit less stellar.

Insomniac Games created something very special with Marvel's Spider-Man. Controlling Spidey to swing through NYC and beat up criminals while experiencing a memorable story campaign makes for one of the most satisfying experiences in modern gaming.

    88
Insomniac has found a way to weave together the human side of Peter Parker with the combat and web-slinging of Spider-Man to create a web of intrigue that any PlayStation 4-owning superhero fan should play.

The Wall Crawler’s open world doesn’t consistently deliver the thrilling moments of its main campaign, but the foundation laid here is undoubtedly a spectacular one.

Probably one of the best iterations on the Spider-Man videogame franchise ever, Insomniac delivers a classic open world title with an strong single-player campaign for everyone to enjoy. While it lacks some unique personality as a game, it’s easy to forget its minor drawbacks while web surfing Manhattan.
  75. Marvel's Spider-Man is one of the best superhero game ever made. It's got a great story, great characters characters and city of course.

It’s more than enough that Spider-Man’s mechanics are so smooth and exhilarating that I was actively seeking out new excuses to partake in them, even when there was repetition in the actual tasks. In so thoroughly capturing what it’s like to be this character, Insomniac hasn’t simply made a great Spider-Man game, but the great Spider-Man game. I’m glad that Activision lost the license.

No character has ever been as fun to control as Spidey in Marvel’s Spider-Man when he swings his way through New-York. A polished and amusing game, although somewhat forgettable.
  78. Sep 4, 2018
    85
Since the announcement of the game, Insomniac seemed to be the ideal developer for a Spider-Man game and in the end it delivered to this expectation. From beginning to end it is an absolute joy to move in high speeds between and over the skyscrapers of Manhattan as the friendly neighborhood hero, as well as getting involved in satisfying combat situations (with the obligatory Arkham inspiration). It’s a great game that’s shy from being amazing due to the forgettable and in the end derivative open world elements.

Marvel's Spider-Man has some issues in some ways, but overall, it might be the greatest superhero game since Infamous: Second Son and Batman: Arkham Knight.

Marvel's Spider-Man is a huge tribute to the superhero. The original story is written around him and has great moments. It's somehow slow at the beginning and the game design is not original, but from the second act it starts to gain strength and at the end has the right climax to make the entire game succeed.
  84. Effortlessly yet cinematically swinging from the Battery through the Village and Central Park and up to Harlem is itself worth the price of admission. And now that Insomniac has all the mechanical fundamentals firmly in place, one can hope that the inevitable sequel will give this talented studio the confidence to take a few more risks and create a truly inimitable superhero game.

In terms of story-telling and direction this might as well be an addition to Marvel’s Cinematic Universe with its high production values. But as soon as you stray away from the main plot, you’ll land in an open world that is mostly beautiful to look at, but where some positive elements meet quite a few that are only average at best. Nonetheless a great superhero romp throughout.

Insomniac Games just hits the jackpot. Marvel's Spider-Man is a spectacular game, with a dynamic gameplay, but it lacks inspiration and originality when it comes to the side quests.

Marvel’s Spider-Man is undoubtedly the best Spider-Man videogame ever made, but it could have been a lot better.

There are myriad good reasons why Marvel's Spider-Man is the best-selling and highest-rated Spider-Man title in years. While it has a few glaring flaws, they pale in comparison to all of the things the team at Insomniac got right. A well-acted, strong story serves as the backbone for an experience that just plain feels right for Spider-Man, and fans and newcomers alike won't be disappointed by this trip to the Spider-verse.

Insomniac definitely went overboard with collectibles and routine side activities, which is definitely detrimental to game interest (especially since equipment upgrades are directly tied to them). But they nearly made up for it with attention to details and quality of cutscenes. [Issue #233, p.74]

Spider-Man is very much a blockbuster on PS4 as Homecoming was on the big screen. The game captures the web-head brilliantly and services fans with by far the best example of Spidey related shenanigans yet.

It’s not perfect, but Marvel’s Spider-Man is the best that a Spider-Man game has ever been, knocking even the long-lauded Spider-Man 2 off its perch. Fast, fluid and webtastically fun, Spider-Man will appeal to Spider-fans and newcomers alike.

It is at its core a forgettably designed, cookie-cutter open-world game, that is elevated by its traversal, its combat and stealth, by the eventually irresistible pull of its story. It may not have legs, but while it lasts it is delightful. The Amazing Spider-Man? Not quite. But it is frequently spectacular, and given Parker's rather chequered videogame past, that feels like some achievement. [Issue#324, p.104]

Marvel's Spider-Man is a modern, AAA blockbuster video game in every possible sense. It is highly polished, intricately designed, near-flawlessly produced and intelligently scaffolded. And it has achieved for the character of Spider-Man what very few games about comic book heroes accomplish: creating an experience both purely focused on the character and broad enough to have mass appeal. It will, without a doubt, stand for some time as the definitive Spider-Man video game.

Spider-Man combines elements from plenty of other games to deliver a game with expansive combat, exciting traversal, and a solid, authentic story.

The overall result is a spectacular experience that wins with varied play, humor and amusement park-like excitement. But the experience is lessened, too, by predicable narrative, and the limited reactions of the non-playable denizens who populate this open world island of Manhattan.

This is probably the greatest tribute and iteration of Spider-Man ever created, computer game or otherwise. This is an essential play for any fan of the wall-crawler, however a few niggles and issues prevent it from being an all-time classic title. There's a great story, beautiful graphics, excellent voice acting and simply lots of fun to play. There's lots of DLC on the way and potential for sequels, so we'll definitely get caught in this spider's web again.

The new Spider-Man is worth your time and money - the storyline, exploration and tons of easter eggs provide loads of fun. This is possibly the best game for PS4 after God of War, and while Spider-Man is not quite up there with Kratos, "slightly worse than GoW" is still a huge compliment.

It’s uncomplicated fun, and it should deliver fun evenings defeating Spidey’s Rogue’s Gallery, exploring the city or even just pelting around at high speed hoovering up collectibles.

Spider-Man has all kinds of tricks to silence and distract his opponents, and while the AI is far too static and rote to make for genre-defying stealth missions, playing around with the extensive Spidey toolbox in these scenes never got old. In fact, because the stealth and combat sequences are all explicitly built around allowing Spider-Man the creativity to use his full range of abilities, it’s no coincidence that these moments where the game genuinely feels like the proper Spider-Man experience that everything should have been.

Spider-Man PS4 continues the awesome tradition we’ve seen emerge in the last decade or so of amazing licensed games. I wasn’t a huge fan of some of the more repetitive side activities, but I had a lot of fun in general and gained a new appreciation of Spider-Man, enough so that I’ll be checking out the comics when I get the time.

While some of the antiquated trappings of open world games from years gone-by are present, Spider-Man manages to remain a delight through great acting performances, a compelling story, terrific combat, and joyous swinging.

Insomniac’s take on Spider-Man has its caveats, with its raft of distractions following a little too closely to what has gone before. But its dedication to and understanding of its leading man make for a thrilling and satisfying slice of comic-book entertainment. Because, ultimately, Spider-Man, I like the way you move.

Despite a few missteps in its open world design, Insomniac Games has delivered on its promise. Needless to say, this is the best Spider-Man game to date.

Apart from a few smudges, everything works well. Spider-Man is more in shape than ever: he jumps, fights and lives an exciting story inside a world that is beautiful to see and perfectly directed. But it's a game that promised more than it could keep; betrayed, perhaps, by its great ambitions. And it's a pity that its strength, the magnificent New York reproduced in all its details, turns out to be at the same time the heaviest of its flaws. A crime, that Spider-man’s freedom is at the same time his punishment, because of the schematic and repetitive side quests.

Marvel's Spider-Man offers adrenaline rushes but also some free falls. If the incarnation of the Spider is breathtaking in this great playground that is New York, it is legitimate to hope a plot and more inspired missions while the formula is copied and pasted from recent Batman games. Spider-Man PS4 is solid and generous, but it lacks daring and originality.

Spider-Man's mechanics feel fluid and satisfying enough to keep players engaged throughout the entire campaign. However, your interactions with that world often feel detached, which is at odds with the humanity at the core of Spider-Man's appeal.

Insomniac IS doing a lot of things right with Spider-Man. The superhero feeling is perfect, and fans of Spider-Man will find plenty of references to the universe. But the game lacks something that is difficult to pinpoint. Not many of its ridiculous amount of side missions feel unique, and the main story lacks tension. Spider-Man is a beautiful, charming and creative game, but it's also repetitive and too ambitious for its own good.

Spider-Man is a stark example of an outdated "sandbox game” whose goal is not to entertain but rather preoccupy players, and it uses every cliche in the book to do that.

This game shows tremendous love for all things Spider-Man, and the ending packs a punch he would be proud of. But Insomniac relies too much on its hero to elevate the world built around him, with the result that the game wears thin some time before its powerful conclusion.

Spider-Man is happy to confirm your superhero-gaming bias. If this adventure isn't ultimately your cup of tea, it won't be for a lack of effort, polish, and content on Insomniac's part. [Ars Technica Approved]

It's insanely fun to swing around Manhattan and fight as Spider-Man, but the game's depth may come up short for players who are looking for more than just fan service.

Whether a fan of Spider-Man himself, the open-world genre, or action games in general, Marvel’s Spider-Man is an excellent example of each.

A rare harmony of developer and licence makes Insomniac's open-worlder a total treat. [Recommended]

As a playground for one of the most idiosyncratic superheroes of all time, Marvel’s Spider-Man is sheer bliss. It’s a sandbox platformer first and foremost, and a damn good one. Throughout playing the game I was constantly hounded by the question of whether this—sublime superhero traversal in a gorgeous, idealized version of New York—were enough. After countless hours later spent cleaning up every last icon on the map, I’m convinced they are.
  6. Sep 4, 2018
There aren’t many surprises to the game; despite being an open-world experience, it plays upon a linear story, and the twists that happen feel familiar. The action sequences are breathless and memorable, but after the game’s final act I was left wanting more. Just like a summer blockbuster, Spider-Man leaves too much waiting in the wings for its obviously upcoming sequel. [Polygon Recommends]

What this new Spider-Man game gets is the spirit of Spidey, his world of friends and foes, and the impossible gymnastics—in all senses of the word—involved with maintaining an alter ego.
  8. Sep 4, 2018
Perhaps the best Spider-Man game yet made, Marvel’s Spider-Man feels terrific to play and has a near-flawless combat system. Just a shame about the open world busywork tasks and lack of villains. Still, Insomniac made a bloody fine game!
  9. Sep 4, 2018
At its best, Spider-Man might just be the finest superhero video game ever made. It uses relatively simple and intuitive controls to make you feel like a powerful hero, bounding across a vast city with ease, using spectacular skills to defeat evil. The epic boss battles in Spider-Man rival anything you’ve seen in a Marvel movie, including an absolutely incredible final encounter. I just wish that core wasn’t bogged down by a tragically mundane open-world structure. It’s a game that manages to do one thing really well, but it does it so well that it elevates the whole experience.

There’s a wonderful magic to zipping around what feels like a full-size New York, beating up muggers, possessed hitmen and fascist paramilitary forces. The easy-to-master controls, gorgeous graphics and sound design and excellent writing and acting combine to create a game that’s one of the most fun I’ve played in years.
  11. Sep 4, 2018
Marvel’s Spider-Man feels like the first entry in an ambitious and promising new series. Making it all the more unfortunate it didn’t do more to subvert expectations, or to pay off some of the more exciting possibilities it seemed to be gesturing toward — and it will likely always exist in the shadow of “Batman: Arkham Asylum.” But its masterful web-swinging and its undeniable sense of joy make for an experience that’s more gratifying and eminently replayable than anything seen from a superhero game in years.
  12. Sep 4, 2018
Spider-Man is at its best when you’re mid-flow. It’s a game that can capture that awesome trance-like feeling where you’re so in tune with the rhythm of swinging and hopping between buildings or dodging, countering and attacking enemies that everything else melts away. That’s when it feels most special, and it’s then that what Insomniac has achieved here is most plain. Much of its design is familiar, but it appears here in a refined, polished form that makes it an easy recommendation.
  13. Sep 4, 2018
Sure, there are obvious weaknesses to improve on, but importantly, I want to see what happens next with Peter and the people around him. There are some surprisingly bold storytelling decisions in Spider-Man, especially relative to what happens in this genre, and I'm invested in seeing the inevitable fallout. It helps, obviously, that Spider-Man was tremendously fun to play, too.
