Overall, the Namco Museum Archives collection offers a bunch of great games in versions that some players might not have seen before, but the whole package is missing some personality. Sure, that doesn’t detract from the titles themselves, but it’s shame to see these historical artifacts treated in such a slapdash way.

A Namco-centric collection of classics, which will be interesting exclusively to ex-Nintendo owners. Not exactly a mandatory buy for the others.

Both Namco Museum Archives Volume 1 and Volume 2 miss the mark, even if some of the game included are still fun even today. The reasons are a high price, an inconsistent selection and the absence of any kind of extra content.

This is a very basic collection of some very good 8bit games, but with no museum unlockables, no effort to offer anything more that the most basic package and rudely broken in two parts so that it can generate more revenue. The Museum series from Namco needs to grow up and start treating its customers with more care and respect, otherwise few people will consider revisiting this museum.

Both Museum Archive volumes utilise the same basic user interface and generic retro music that is serviceable, if a bit dull. They also employ the same settings, including a screen size modifier and a rewind system that makes any game laughably easy when abused. Having exactly the same functionality in both games also raises the uncomfortable question of why these collections had to be separated into two volumes at all. Still, they both offer a good selection of nostalgic gems, the odd so-so title like the frustratingly sloppy Mappy-Land, as well as a disappointing lack of unlockable extras. If it were one complete collection it’d be easily recommended but, as two separate purchases, these are for hardcore Namco fans only.

A great wasted opportunity, yet another demonstration that the software houses themselves must learn to study their history, to preserve and enhance.

Namco plays with our feelings again with another (expensive) double serving of its Good Gold Days games. Feel old yet? You will!
