Hunting Grounds treats the character and setting with reverence, which, as a fan of the movies, is easy to appreciate. If you’re looking for an authentic predator experience, this is about as good as it’s gotten. And fittingly, it’s perhaps best enjoyed the way the predators have interacted with humanity: drop in, enjoy the hunt, and get out while you can.

Predator: Hunting Grounds’ fun procession of film references and solid gameplay loop distract from the many flaws that hold it back from being an essential online shooter. [Issue#176, p.71]

Predator: Hunting Grounds has several good ideas that result in a quite fun asymmetric multiplayer that, unfortunately, falls into monotony rather quickly, and does not meet many of the objectives it sets.

Much like a real hunt, Predator: Hunting Grounds rewards patience. Wading through the questionable technical performance and perplexing design gives persistent Predators a multiplayer experience that flourishes as its cat-and-mouse gameplay reveals itself like a newly uncloaked Yautja. Collecting four skulls with the spine intact is just as thrilling as taking down a cunning Predator. Yet each blunder and bug acts as another cut on the Predator’s torso, revealing that this monstrosity does, in fact, bleed. It’s just now up to Illfonic to issue some patches to prove that bleeding doesn’t necessarily mean something can be killed so easily.

Predator really nails the tension of being in any of both sides, although now there isn’t much content and the matchmaking times are extremely long. With a solid foundation, we can only hope regular updates make the most of it.

I’ve found myself enjoying my time spent with the game, and I think it has the potential to improve even more. I think if you’re in the market for something akin to Friday the 13th or Evolve, or just looking for a new competitive asymmetrical multiplayer experience, you could do a lot worse than Predator: Hunting Grounds. Just keep in mind that there are elements that feel a little rough at the moment, but barring that, it’s a pretty enjoyable shooter.

Perfectly capturing the feel and look of the nadir of a 30 year-old-franchise, there is much to like about the single-minded offering of Predator: Hunting Grounds. Unfortunately, however, that joy and nostalgia is soon lost in repeating the same, limited experience ad nauseam, and doing so around a frustrating user experience. It's not a bad game, and is fun for a weekend, but it doesn't offer enough to justify it's price tag. This whole 4v1 experiment seemed to have already been tried and failed with the much more ambitious Evolve. I can't see how slapping the Predator franchise logo on the same concept is really going to keep a player base going.

Predator: Hunting Grounds is adecent asymmetrical online shooter, despite lacking the polish of bigger, more established games. Although there aren't a lot of modes, and load times to play as the Predator are too long, it's still a lot of fun.

Predator: Hunting Grounds has a lot of charm and respects the source material. However, it is a flawed experience, and can be frustrating to play at times. Regardless of those flaws, I can still see myself returning especially to play as the Predator.

A great concept and an obvious love for the source material provide a handful of extremely memorable moments, but it can't disguise that the overall product is poorly developed and simply offers too little content.

For what it’s worth there is enjoyment to be found here but it only lasts for a few hours and then you’re set for a tedious grind if you hope to unlock that cool facemask or beret; the gameplay loop just isn’t compelling enough and there isn’t anywhere enough content here to retain a fanbase with any real kind of longevity.

Overall, Predator: Hunting Grounds hits only on a few cylinderswhile leaving you wanting more than is currently available in the title. A universe such as this one should be shown the proper respect, instead it relys too heavily on our nostalgia with the movie franchise to entice players into taking control of an iconic film character to sell itself. And while it’s sound design is fantastic, and the combat itself can be fun for a while, it just doesn’t do enough to keep my attention for too long, making me long for a single-player campaign to bolster my fun.

I enjoyed my time with Predator: Hunting Grounds. It's the first asynchronous multiplayer title in a while that has appealed to me, and it has already shown that it has its potential for fun. Nonetheless, it's a hard sell for a price of $40. It has significant balancing issues, an unstable frame rate on PS4, and it doesn't have a lot of content. It feels like it could've used some more refinement and a few extra maps and modes to show its full potential. I'm sure there will be plenty of content updates and patches in the future, but unless you absolutely can't wait to buy Predator: Hunting Grounds, I'd recommend staying clear and observing from a distance before jumping in.

It seems to suffer from many of the same launch and ongoing issues that plagued Friday the 13th: The Game, but there's a silver lining here. Should the issues I lined out be addressed and improved with future updates, and additional maps and objectives rolled out over time, this could indeed be shaped into an exciting prospect. In its current state, however, it's best left to hardcore Predator fans insistent upon adding any related media to their collection.

Predator: Hunting Grounds has remarkable potential. It has all the right ideas in place but desperately needs further polish and a dedicated player base to flesh it out. The thoughts I’ve shared probably sound incredibly critical, but I oddly feel like sticking around to see where it goes.

At its best, Predator: Hunting Grounds is a tense asymmetrical shooter that forces you to pay attention to your surroundings in a dense, jungle environment. At its worst, it’s a mess of waiting, loading and gunning down shoddy AI-villains in forgettable missions.

There is a glimmer of a diamond in Predator: Hunting Grounds, but it is surrounded by a lot of rough. The game is a lot of fun when you’re playing with friends or even a well-coordinated group as the Fireteam, but balance issues with how the Predator can actually hunt the team or how the Fireteam can respond to an ill-equipped Predator truly keep it in a rough place as an asymmetrical multiplayer title. It has great ideas at its core but the execution at this stage isn’t working, and with fine-tuning, it could be top tier.

There's an unshakable sense that almost everything is less finely-tuned than it should be. Still, this could be one of my favorite flawed games of 2020. It could be the one asymmetrical multiplayer title I keep up with for more than a few weeks. (Sorry, Resident Evil Resistance. I tried!). Granted, I'll need IllFonic to get in the weeds and fight the urge to over-balance, and I'll need my fellow mid-level players to stick with it so the rest of us aren't carved up by diehard Predator fans.

Predator: Hunting Grounds is bolstered by its unique gameplay dynamics and beloved license, but falls flat thanks to unbalanced and repetitive matches as well as a general lack of polish. Some matches manage to capitalize on the thrill of hunting prey and surviving alien encounters, but the overly-simplistic Fireteam gameplay and the unnecessarily complicated Predator mechanics lead to matches that end far too quickly to feel satisfying for either side. With some post-launch balance refinements, additional polish and a proper Fireteam tutorial, the title could re-emerge as an imperfect but more frequently enjoyable experience thanks to its strong fundamentals. But as it stands, Predator: Hunting Grounds is tough to recommend at launch to those who don’t consider themselves diehard Predator or asymmetrical multiplayer fans.

Despite being a fun game, it doesn't offer too many hours to play. The environment is great but not the graphics that looks a bit poor. Illfonic needs to add content and improve the queue times to turn Predator: Hunting Grounds into a better game.

Predator: Hunting Grounds is a multiplayer game to enjoy with friends. Sowing terror as a Predator by going through the jungle could be great, but the game needs to improve a few points. Although the title has major shortcomings, such as the lack of maps or long matchmaking times, the studio has designed a game that will please fans of Friday the 13th: The Game.

Predator: Hunting Grounds is a game that still needs a lot of work. If you can make it past the sometimes unbearably long matchmaking times, it can be a ton of fun. Constant glitches and gameplay issues, however, hold it back from being reliably enjoyable. A little more time in the oven might make Hunting Grounds a must-play multiplayer experience, but, for now, it’s probably best to wait a while before picking it up.

Predator: Hunting Grounds is a game that feels like a good idea that failed to materialize. I can only recommend the game for serious fans of the long-running franchise; or those who can wait around for the game to develop post-launch, which shouldn’t be acceptable in a property as large as the Predator.

Predator: Hunting Grounds is a decent multiplayer romp with just enough content and ideas to make it worthwhile. It’s a huge improvement over Ifflonic’s last game, Dead Alliance, and one that’s definitely pumped up thanks to having a popular license to lean on.

Predator: Hunting Grounds occasionally offers a satisfying and violent asymmetrical multiplayer showdown, but doesn't look or play well while doing so. Hardcore fans of the series might get some value out of this title, if they're patient enough to wait in the long matchmaking queues.

Since it’s a multiplayer-only title with exactly one mode, Hunting Grounds was clearly banking on the strength of its premise. Failing that, there’s just not much to it, and players will have seen everything there is to see after just a few matches. Maybe we should take this as a signal to stop trying to make Predator games a thing — if this didn’t work, I’m doubtful that anything will.

Predator: Hunting Grounds is an asymmetric game with an interesting premise, yet it ultimately fails to deliver its full potential. There are thrilling moments but they are too few and far between. With enough time spent on polishing the game, it could become a top-tier title in its genre. As it is now, it is a tough game to recommend even to the most diehard Predator fans.

The big issues with this title are that it feels unfinished and very thin in terms of content and gameplay. There’s no single-player or offline content to be found here, and when you see how ‘smart’ the AI Soldiers are and how they act as bullet sponges with questionable hitboxes. You’ll understand why. This leads us to believe that the game is still a work in progress, and although this potentially can mean that these issues will be smoothed out or changed in the future, from the copy that’s on the shelves right now, this is what you get.

Predator: Hunting Grounds has good ideas: it's more than interesting that Soldiers and the Predator face each other on a "living" map where there are missions to complete, AI-controlled squadrons and animals to hunt. But in practice, it fails completely. Missions are boring, the AI has unforgivable errors and the maps are few and all the same. Illfonic can fix matchmaking and balance issues with a patch, but fixing the rest will take much more work.

Similar to a cloaked Yautja hopping through the jungle canopies above, you’ll have to look pretty damn hard to see the fun in Predator: Hunting Grounds.

Predator: Hunting Grounds isn’t a terrible game. Not at all. But it’s just not good enough. The core of the game is decent, but it needs more maps, more interesting objectives when playing as the Fireteam, and simply more polish. On top of that, while playing as the Predator can be fun, you’ve got to be prepared to spend nearly half your time waiting on matchmaking, and then you could just find yourself running around a jungle like a headless chicken if the opposing Fireteam has its collective head screwed on. With a little bit of work and some additional content, Predator: Hunting Grounds could definitely be worth a purchase, but until then, you’re probably best steering clear.

Predator: Hunting Grounds is, unfortunately, forgettable and despite being partly interesting when you get to play the Predator, it is plagued by some arguable design choices made by IllFonic.
  40. 50
Predator: Hunting Grounds feels like a rough and empty game that is held up by its adherence to the original film's tone and atmosphere. But the overall quality hits more like the forgettable sequels, unfortunately.
  41. 50
One would hope that IllFonic's past struggles would lead to it delivering more polished games in the future, but Hunting Grounds has many of the same problems that Friday the 13th launched with. Returning players will feel the same sense of déjà vu they would upon watching a disappointing movie sequel... and to be blunt that's something that Predator fans know all too well at this point.

Predator: Hunting Grounds doesn’t quite let you live out that power fantasy of being an extraterrestrial master hunter, nor does it provide top-tier co-op FPS gunplay. Brief moments playing on either side of the battlefield create genuinely exciting action scenes, but they’re all too infrequent and end far too abruptly when you find them because the Predator is too often outgunned and has few means of dividing and conquering his prey. There’s a consistently enjoyable experience buried somewhere in the janky jungle of Predator: Hunting Grounds, but it’s just not that easy to find yet.

Hopefully the game will improve, for example by offering more varied maps and by optimizing the formula: balancing, fluidity of play. In the meantime, we prefer to relaunch part of Friday The 13th: The Video Game, which despite its many shortcomings, offered a better gaming experience.

Hunting Grounds is, in short, a poorly finished product, small on the interface and shaky in the gameplay department. Recommended only for those with a close-knit team, for those who do not want to surrender to the curse of the asymmetric multiplayer, or to diehard fans of the film saga; and even in that case the suggestion remains to wait for an advantageous offer.

So far, the game has been plagued by bugs, balance issues, bad AI, and worst of all, awful matchmaking times - so much so that the developer's live streams and social media presence has been hounded by unimpressed players. The game has some of the charm and the popular IP to gain an audience, but lacks the unpredictability, quality, and thrills of other titles in its genre. If you've been waiting 10 years for a Predator game and don't mind the premium price point, this might be one for the trophy case but do your research first.

The graphics on ps4 are barely comparable to Black Ops 1, which came out 10 years ago. In addition to inept and horribly outdated visuals, this game dares to not only run at 30 frames but dip below it and reach 20 frames multiple times during every match. Customization is fine for the most part but there isn't enough weapons, not enough attachments for them either. The only saving grace of this game is Predator, but you can only play him if you aren't in a party. WTF. Even in Friday the 13th, which came out 3 years ago, you could be in a party and still get Jason and try to kill your friends. Why do I have to host private matches for that?! This is absolutely horrid - the most fun you can have with this game, you can't have it with friends. Even for 40 dollars, this isn't worth it. If you're a Predator fan, wait for a sale. I feel bad for Illfonic, I like these guys. Please, do patch this game, add more maps, fix the AI, and make it so we could get Predator while in a party, please. For now, I'll be playing something else. Full Review »
