While the minigames on display are absolutely nothing out of the ordinary, they are just a part of a bigger picture. And that is a cynical satire on the American way of life that feels even more relevant with the unfortunate events as of late.

The American Dream presents a slice of Americana in which guns are fetishized to their idiotic maximum; guns for cooking, guns for dancing, guns for marrying, and guns for childbirth. While The American Dream’s action is adjacent to conventional VR shooting galleries, its vicious political commentary satirizes gun culture and leaves no survivors. The obliteration of reality appears to be a natural side effect of defending the indefensible.

While The American Dream is a different and humourous take on the growingly congested VR shooting gallery genre, the overall gameplay does not match up to its wit and political satire. The game is not without merit, however its slow pacing and occasionally boring tasks let the experience down in the long run.

An innovative PS VR shooter that too often puts the political message ahead of the fun. It's destined to become a cult classic, but not an essential experience. [May 2018, p.90]

Guns are stupid and so is this game. The American Dream may be clever from time to time and provide some laughs in the process but as a game, it's too full of bugs and lacks the substance that would have made it a must-have VR title.

Has there ever been a satirical comedy shooting game on rails before? and in VR?
If there has, I certainly can't think of one.

Has there ever been a satirical comedy shooting game on rails before? and in VR?
If there has, I certainly can't think of one.

You're sat in a chair, in a surreal museum exhibition rollercoaster kind of setting, learning about America's gun culture and using guns in everyday life. Each stage has a different theme and setting so it's not a game of just constantly shooting enemies and a boss like you'd expect a gun game to be. A glorious political stab at gun culture in the USA, a story told by the most ridiculous of gun mini games.

One could say it's similiar to Until Dawn:Rush of Blood but with a cardboard cartoon setting and a talking dog.

Without spoiling the game too much, on one stage for example you have to "tidy your room" by shooting at all of the mess on the floor, and in the next instant you'll have to sniper shot your next door neighbor in the face, to ask them on a date...

At times it's a bit disturbing, but it's funny as well. I wish more games were made like this.
If you have VR and two move controllers then quite frankly, this game is a must buy.

Not a particularly long game, nor is it graphically or technically ground breaking. It'll win you over with its charm and sheer ludicrousness. It often made me think "What the hell is this game anyway?"

Due to recent events in the world, i'm genuinely surprised due to its unconventional gun content that it hasn't been picked up a news station, or similiar. Perhaps in a way, the release of the game couldn't have been timed better and should be a poster child for how games don't cause an increase in gun violence.

If you're looking for something new and fresh, or are hankering after another move controller gun game for your PS4, this is the game for you. Personally, I couldn't wait to see what crazy thing I'll be required to do in the next scene.

The game isn't perfect though of course, towards the end of the game there were some weird issues with sound, most notably music or sound effects being a bit too loud, to the extent where you can't easily hear what the narrative dog is saying to you. I'm sure the sound issues will be fixed in a patch though at some point. Although I was with it, the humor and theme of the game might get on your nerves eventually, depending on your taste in comedy. Sometimes there were tracking issues when using double handed weapons like the shotgun.

Important to note, due to the way the game works, such as how to reload your guns, there is no option to use the PS4 controllers like with most gun games on PS4, you MUST have two move controllers in order to play this game.

It is rather excellent and entertaining as far as the idea goes.

Great story about living the American dream
    Humour is on point
    Colourful animations

    Glitchy controls
    Repetitive gameplay
The game is very slow which 1-2 minute loads screens and 2-3 periods of doing nothing. For a VR game it gets boring just sitting/standing there doing nothing with your hands
