The absolutely ASININE matchmaking that went into this game reminds me of the type of programming that a 6 year old would design with a 2 month subscription to code ninjas and a 3 day pass to work at Nintendo. Honestly, every PROFESSIONAL MOBA player in the freaking world could have told you that balanced matchmaking is #1 for a making a MOBA game enjoyable. Hell it’s imperative to make any competitive game enjoyable, and last I checked, this is not Nintendo’s first competitive game. So why is it, you made the simple and brilliant decision, to pair solo queue players up against full squads of players who are partied up and communicating? That’s like having a game of dodgeball where one team has to wear blindfolds. STUPID. How did this even get approved? Was this even considered in the 2 weeks you took to plan how this game would work? This is one the BIGGEST barriers standing in between this game being 10/10 and the 3.7 user rating that it has. This and properly training players HOW A MOBA WORKS need to be PRIORITY #1 for the next update. You have YouTube, you have professional MOBA players, you have reviews. F the skins for 1 bloody month. Thankfully this game isn’t p2w, but it is very bad. The matchmaking is the worst I’ve ever seen in a game, and you can’t check delay or ping before accepting the match. Sometimes the game won’t even load the arena so you’re stuck.

The introduction of chooseable movesets and item builds in the pre-game lobby lends an interesting depth to the strategy of the game, and having it done at the start of the game removes a lot of the tedium of menu navigation during the games themselves.

However, as has been stated by numerous users before me, the predatory monetisation and addiction tactics clearly utilised by the company are morally deplorable, particularly given Pokemon's appeal with younger audiences and the accessibility of the game itself allowing for young audiences to participate in the game. The game is rife with monetarily complex and predatory micro-transactions, be it for new Pokemon to play, new cosmetics, or even the aforementioned items which provide a direct advantage for any players seeking to play the game more competitively. To heavily monetise a game without any regulations or age requirements is completely irresponsible, and quite frankly revolting. I've long since lost faith in the Pokemon company's commitment to publishing quality products rather than relying solely on the appeal of the branding, but to see them stoop to such blatant levels of money-grubbery disgusts me to a point I can't ignore, and I'm inclined not to support the game at all. I only hope the negative backlash might prompt the Pokemon company and Tencent to make more ethical adjustments to their monetisation scheme, as a truly welcoming and enjoyable game does still exist beneath it all.

You can have a huge lead during 8 minutes and lose because of Zapdos mechanic in less than 1 minute which is a horrible balance and that leads to way too much frustration.
Also, it's hard to communicate with your team.
The weekly cap to obtain a new character is also a bad choice, just made to make money and it's so obvious that it's disgusting.
I'm not surprised that Tencent/Timi did the gatcha system in the addition to all the monetization systems this game already has, they do the same on many of their games.

Could possibly be an interesting take on Pokemon, but it's ruined with predatory micro-transactions. Items upgrade at a glacial pace, unless you pay to upgrade them for significant stat and speed boosts, on top of other gacha style gambling mechanics. In a franchise aimed at a younger audience this is unacceptable.

This could have been a chance for a pokemon game with pure fun gameplay without any baggage, but I guess that was just too good to be true.

For a MOBA, it's very accessible. Controls are very easy and the moment-to-moment gameplay is simple to understand. Definitely made with children in mind. The unique mechanics are a bit odd and have some balancing issues. The game favors steamrolling, if a group of enemies win a teamfight and all score, they instantly get to full health and there isn't much your team can do about it.

The mechanics are well-explained but the meta and objectives are poorly directed. Nobody's really sure where to go and it's easy to forget that you don't make any progress defeating enemies without getting points and scoring, which can be unfairly difficult if you're pushed back by a steamrolling team. Especially so with the 10-minute timer, which makes the game more casual but makes comebacks very rare.

Outside the gameplay, there's classic Tencent scummy freemium practices. The game entices you with beginner quests that dry up and rewards will become scarce. I expect opinion of the game to go down sharply after the 14th day of its existence.

This yields a stat increase from just +1 Attack to +15 (with an extra 7.5% attack speed and some damage based on missing HP% on top) for just one item. I think mid-term using just the in-game rewards it's possible to reach level 20 on your main items, but level 30 is outright impossible without the use of a credit card.

If you want to find out more about why it's pay 2 win and why everyone who claims otherwise hasn't done proper research, check out this reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/oqal4o/pokemon_unite_how_pay2win_is_pokemon_unite_i_did/

Either way, really like the game in itself, but a MOBA that outright sells you an insane stat boost for your in-game characters is absolutely not worth playing long-term. Coming from someone who spent years playing LoL and Dota.

Oh, and the UI feels really unresponsive for some reason (double presses to move the cursor multiple times just don't work most of the time, as if the menus are running at 10FPS or so). Although that doesn't affect normal gameplay, obviously... unless you need to change some of your Items last minute and it just doesn't work because everything is so damn slow! :'D

The short answer is, hell no.

Pokemon Unite does not follow the traditional rules of a moba, now this is fine, perfectly fine in fact, no moba needs to. They, being the random plethora of moba makers out there, have mostly seen league and dota and then copied that success. But have gamefreak and co. made a good and different moba? No, and here’s why.

First off, this game is pay to win. While, you can play and play and play and get up to the levels of others in the game, that doesn’t prevent the fact that you can spend money, and take a shortcut, that’s what pay-to-win is, to the alternative, play-to-win option.

But excluding the monetization of the game, there are several core problems with the game in general. You are given three abilities/skills and not four compared to PC mobas, this is normal for mobile mobas, but what with the "ultimate" being on such a long cool down or charge rate, you're often stuck with two abilities, which makes combat very limiting and combos very scarce. I can’t tell if pokemon are extremely squishy, or if it’s because some others have stacked items to make it appear so, but it’s very hard to survive and function in the game when you’re being hammered so relentlessly. In traditional mobas you have minions to rely on for coverage, and turrets to rely on for shelter, but in this game, excluding the terrible regen rate on your goals, there is no safety to rely on. In addition to the goals only giving you regen effects as well as a small shield, it’s almost pointless to poke your opponents and wear them down, heavily relying on a third player to come in and change the tide.

Speaking of third players, the junglers, or speedsters to be more specific are a little on the op side. While anyone can be op with maxed out items, speedsters in general can one shot even tanks/defenders of the game, leaving you wondering, why pick them to begin with. Defenders in general are in a poor state, they aren’t very good at, well, defending. Sure they are tankier, and have cc, but it’s not enough if again, you’re getting hammered by more than one player. One defender can not prevent three players from scoring the same goal.

Most of the mechanics in the game are not done well. I get the theme of the game, but it just doesn’t work out as a moba. You have to farm to level up but then that means you’re not scoring goals, you have to defend the goal so others can’t score, but that means you aren’t farming to level up, if you’re scoring goals you’re leaving your goal unprotected, leaving enemies the option to score, and with the **** meta right now, you can’t rely on anyone.

Worst of all, something so terribly broken to the point it doesn’t even matter if you were **** all doing jack **** for the first eight minutes. If you manage to kill zapdos, your score is likely to triple, and it is likely. VERY LIKELY, mind you, to pass the opposing teams score, even if they were curb stomping you prior.

All in all the game just does not work as a competitive game, there are too many loopholes that hinder the games integrity. Even worse, gamefreak decided to partner with tencent on this, the same company who made arena of valor, the same company who ditched their own moba on the nintendo switch a couple months in. So yeah, the future of pokemon unite is not a bright one.

P.S: Do not listen to the critic reviews, most of them are not moba players and will not understand the issues with the game out right. If you're given one star food, and you've never tried five star food, then you have nothing to compare your poor experience with. pokemon unite is fundamentally, mechanically, and strategically inferior to games like league or dota by several, SEVERAL accounts, as I've listed a few reasons why already.

On a not-so-good side, we have the fact that the game itself doesn't tell you which pokemon uses Sp. Attack and which one doesn't. Thankfully some websites got you covered, still is a big fail here.

Another not-so-bad thing is that matches sometimes feel so QUIET, the announcer needs to be more active in my opinion. Additionally, the menu has some slight lags.

The real problem comes with the microtransactions method. If those were like a regular MOBA in which you pay only for cosmetics or experience boosts or the battler pass It wouldn't have been too much of a deal, however, here you can pay2win which is really discouraging. MOBAS are games about skill and strategy not about how much is your credit card's limit.

    If there were not a pay2win mechanic I would've given this game a 7 or 8.

For starters, the idea of 'premium currency' is a trick to begin with. Why not just say in the shop that a given skin is, say, "$7.99"? Instead, they create an illusion that de-values money, into shiny little "gems" or whatever a given game might call it. THEN, back when this idea was new it was an easy conversion, like $10 for 1000 gems, but over time it's shifted, just a bit, such as $12 for 1000 gems, so that when you see something like 800 gems in-game FEELS about $8, but it actually cost you around $10. THEN, interweave it with a bunch of other in-game currencies, which further dis-associates your real money, with in-game mechanics. THEN, some items are labeled as "coins/gems" and others as just "tickets", but when you try to buy a ticket item without enough tickets, it prompts you to use gems, hiding that possibility of real money. Oh, and these items are used to increase your stats, giving you an edge over those who do not pay, praying on human susceptibility the way a casino does. THEN, all this happens in a game series typically targeted to our CHILDREN. All this seriously upsets me. The next time the pokemon company president, sitting at his desk with pokemon plushies all around, tries to tell me about the next new pokemon game, I don't know if I'll be able to look at him in the face. Since you can hold 3 Items, someone who pays money can get a crazy boost, overpowering everyone who doesn't pay2win.

Removing an in match shop like in every other MOBA where you can get Items with the Gold gained from killing players and mobs, took away deepth and replaced it with an environment where wealthy players can always dominate those with less money.

My most significant complaint, however, is that the game is a blatant cash-grab by developers. This is not a pokemon game, just a desperate pay-to-win ploy. You could skin the characters with anything: digimon, skylanders, freaking transformer robots, and it would be the exact same game. The fact they used the pokemon label and imagery with NONE of the content or mechanics from the games just makes it painfully obvious how little they care for the Pokemon name, or for the fans of the franchise. The only motive here is money.

It's pay2Win. You can equip held items for your Mons which you can upgrade. For money or by playing the game for something around 500+ days. Since it's competitive you either cash in hard or you sit in low rankings no matter your actual skill.

    ---The Good---

Pokémon Unite's gameplay is a blast. It is tight-controlling with a streamlined set of options, and is easily the most approachable MOBA that I have yet played.

The number of moves and items that a player can use is more limited than in most other MOBAs, which has caused some online to call this "baby's first MOBA." These critics miss the point: Pokémon is a franchise that serves to introduce its audience to any given genre with simplified mechanics in a user-friendly way. Most Pokémon games are in the JRPG genre, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon is a Roguelite, Pokkén Tournament is a fighting game, etc. In this regard, Pokémon Unite excels.

I particularly enjoy the time limits. I love knowing (and being able to control) how long my gameplay sessions will be. No longer will I be stuck in a 40-minute-long run trying to destroy the last of the zones.

Because Pokémon Unite is based on such a beloved franchise, millions of people are eager to give it a shot. I have played MOBAs for years, and never have I had the joy of such a short wait in an online queue.

The communication in Pokémon Unite is also streamlined. There is no way to voicechat with strangers, or even type them a message. You are able to call out specific messages via a pre-built list of options, so you don't miss out on any critical collaboration tools in this team-built game. However, the lack of extensive online interaction means that I know that my games will never end up with any toxic slurs or rants. I acknowledge that many people prefer full voice chat in their multiplayer games, but I have always enjoyed being able to control the toxicity in my life and the tradeoff has always been worth it to me.

    ---The Bad---

As great as the gameplay is, the rest of the game's interface is terrible. In the menus, sometimes trying to move the cursor left or right doesn't register or otherwise has a lag, as if each movement in the menus is sent to a server. Looking for specific things may not always be intuitive: to change a Pokémon's held item or moveset you must be in a screen that means you are about to battle.

Most egregious of all are the multiple types of meaningless quests and activities and currencies that it throws at the player. It seems like the game's developers copy/pasted its monetization practices from the other games that they made, namely League of Legends and Arena of Valor. The pay-to-win complaint is valid, though (in my opinion) overblown (especially since the nerfing that the developers did to what money can buy in-game).

    ---Conclusion---

Pokémon Unite has solid potential for being the most widely-consumed MOBA to-date. People have shown that they are hungry for Pokémon content of all types. Hopefully Tencent will one day realize that they don't need to make such efforts trying to trick us into paying money, as we are all eager to throw at least a few bucks to a solid Pokémon experience that we respect. If that happens, Pokémon Unite will be one of the best Pokémon games. Until then, it's worth trying out, but SOMETHING in it will frustrate you at least a little.

It's a Pay to Win abuse of the Pokemon franchise. This game is pay to win. Period
Items are a minimal advantage but huge in the competitive scenario. This move was disgusting. Get monetization from skins, pokemons, etc. Nintendo. Fix this plz

I really enjoyed this game. The graphics are alright, the selection of characters is nice and controls and game mechanics work well, too. Pay to win. Costs over 130$ to upgrade 3 items on 1 pokemon. Alternatively, it would take you 450 days of doing dailies everyday to achieve same result. Pay to win garbage.

Pay to win, unbalanced pokemons, gameplay is pretty good although you don't need much skill to play it.
    Makes no sense

The game is about as pay to win as it could get thanks to how upgrading your items work. Standard matches last 10 minutes, and the first 8 minutes are essentially a waste of time as it almost never affects the outcome of the match. The final 2 minutes where all points scored are doubled and if you die in this time span it hits you with around a 50 second respawn time. To top it off you can defeat zapdos, essentially earning your whole squad of 5 50 points, in the part of the match where all scored points are doubled. You often find ppl with no way to participate in the last 2 minutes at all once they’re knocked out thanks to the majorly crippling 50 second respawn and the time it takes to travel the map. Let’s not forget the team that defeats zapdos and got all those free points I talked about earlier, also get to score on your goals uninterrupted now once they reach em. This game has all the regular issues you can expect from any moba, and plenty more far worse issues than the others. Expand

Super innovative disguised pay to win for a moba. that's super creative. Especially for young public. May God protect mom's credit-card.

It's a shame that this game is called a MOBA, because, if u have ever played any MOBA game, there can't be any feature that influences in the game that requires you to pay to get, or, the way that it's really not intended to do: grinding. A literally pay to win game, that calls himself a MOBA to get some LoL/DoTa players that enjoys pokémon to play it.

Played this game for ~2 days and now i can write small review.

Positives: 1. This game is pretty balanced (excluding zapdos buff, which is overpowered) 2. If you know how to play mobas - you can climb in ranks without problems (I, myself, after playing for ~1 day, climbed to Expert 4) 3. The base conception of 10 minute-limited moba game is nice, I like it. 4. This game is pretty

    4. This game is pretty fun to play(imho).

    Negatives:
    1. Weekly limit of 2400 coins is garbage. To buy all the pokemons you need to play this game for months or donate. I don't like it.
    2. Currently, Zapdos is way too powerful, it needs to be nerfed.
    3. This game don't have good way to talk with your teammates, this is pretty garbage (you can't even write message before game start to simply ask your teammates to let you get fast lvl 5 in jungle).
    4. It is possible to play with newbies even in decent rank.

If tencent will remove weekly coins limit, make some balance changes, add more pokemons and make money on skins - this game'll be awesome, but in current state it is only 4/10. (in my opinion)

But feel free to keep giving them mommy’s credit card. Don’t play this trash until they are forced to fix the game. It’s a shame I can’t give this game a -10. Complete garbage I have played the last 25 games at great tier and have won 1 of them despite getting MVP every match but two but the game doesn't even punish those who leave mid match or reward the mvp for carrying even tho its not their fault the rest of the team is trash

I do really enjoy the game, but the big thing that ruins the fun is zapdos.
It needs a big nerf, ive had alot of games that my team was winning big time, but if they get the last hit on zapdos its done and the winning team loses big time.
2 things has to change, first thing is to nerf the stupid zapdos. second thing make it so the team with the most damage gets rotom/drednaw or zapdos.

Most of the time people hide in a bush and wait till they can do the last hit, its stupid.

Overall, Pokémon UNITE is a MOBA with a lot of potential. It’s already great as a casual game with friends, but I believe with some tweaking to Zapdos and removal of the “pay for held item upgrades” option, a strong competitive MOBA lives in Pokémon UNITE. Until then, it’s hard to call it much more than an above-average entry in the crowded MOBA space.

Pokémon Unite is the first attempt at creating a MOBA with the pocket monsters – and I must admit it’s a successful one. The game is fast and intense, but also easy to get a grip on. I don’t expect it to take the esports scene by storm, but it’s very enjoyable and works great in a doctor’s waiting room or on the bus. As for me, I can’t force myself to stop playing Pokémon Unite and hope the developers will keep updating it. [10/2021, p.61]

Pokémon Unite's potential is undermined by its balancing, and might not have enough to offer either of its target audiences.
