Ignore the retro RPG trappings of Rise of the Third Power; this is a great game regardless of whether you’re approaching it for nostalgic purposes. Its story is just fresh enough, its turn-based combat unique enough, to keep you firmly planted in 2022, not 1992.
By grounding its setting and keeping the scope of its story more personal (albeit with major consequences), Rise of the Third Power gets to really focus on each of its eight main characters. The nature of the plot means things are always moving, and as such the time just seems to fly away while playing. Its mechanics aren’t quite as impressive, but the combat system does seem to have had a lot of thought put into it in terms of trying not to waste the player’s time. Basically, this is more of a game for those looking to get into a good tale than those who want to crunch on some chewy, innovative mechanics. If you’re okay with that, you’ll definitely want to check this one out.
The best rpg maker game I've ever played it's amazing, I loved it!!! The story is captivating and the characters as well. I did not enjoy one part at the ending, but I loved the experience nonetheless.
Why good for a SNES throwback? I think it's a bit of an insult when reviewers praise rubbish games all the time, then turn around for a great game and insinuate that it's alright for a SNES throwback nostalgia trip and don't judge it on its own merit.
Anyway, I'm only 4 hours in. I'll update my review later. So far, all great.
A solid "JRPG-esque" adventure from the team behind Ara Fell, Rise of the Third Power manages to send the player back to the golden Super Nintendo age, even with some not equally great dialogues.
Stegosoft has made another excellent step towards capturing the nostalgia of SNES-era RPGs, while not clinging too heavily to the mechanics and constraints of yesteryear that no longer feel fun in an indie RPG. For those who jumped into Ara Fell Enhance Edition, Third Power feels like a natural progression forward, with improvements in every aspect of the game, while cutting out a chunk of the tedious bits. For those craving a JRPG that feels like it’s right at home on a Super Nintendo, while seamlessly melding in modern conveniences like adjustable difficulty level and crafting characters based on what makes the most interesting party for the player, Rise of the Third Power is a prime example of a true throwback gem, and I can’t wait to see what the team has in store next.
Rise of the Third Power, whether in 2022 or 1992, will still slot into the middle of the pack for SNES-inspired RPGs. The combat and overarching story are clear highlights, but there's undeniable bloat that hurts the pacing and the character portraits, for the most part, would be better left on the cutting room floor. While a babystep up from Ara Fell, which I awarded a 7 out of 10 in 2020, Rise of the Third Power doesn't quite do enough to earn a full-throated recommendation. That said, it's still a fairly enjoyable classic RPG experience with interesting characters, a simple but fun battle system, and some humorous dialogue.
While it has it's shortcomings, Rise of the Third Power is still a wonderful JRPG with great gameplay and music that Switch fans, JRPG fans and quite frankly - History fans, will definitely enjoy.
For those with religious concerns, there is a BI character, who is in your group. However very little appears made of it, with the exception of a 24bit hug or **** hard to tell.
The story is incredible. The main story dialogue is well written, always interesting and genuinely funny. Art is gorgeous for Retro. The dialogue art is a mixed bag. Some characters do well with a more cartoonish appearance whereas others, like bad guys, or a necromancer fail to come off as intense. **** art serves the comedy very well. (not to say the game isn't serious at points... it is)
The music is memorable, like it was with some of the old SNES titles. I don't think it's composed by the creators but it is still outstanding.
Combat is good if you put the difficulty up a notch. Characters level up collectively, so you don't have to regrind for other characters. There are skill points to attribute, and rather than buy new weapons every time to find a new town they have you craft weapons. But don't worry, there is no fuss with the crafting system, it's just there to scale your stats not sink your time.
I haven't made it to the end, but so far it is a well paced game, interesting, enjoyable, and other than the minor okeness, which, so far, is a miniscule and forgettable portion of the game, it is fantastic.
This was exactly what I was looking for in an RPG! It reminded me of SNES era RPGs, in terms of graphics, music, and gameplay. The battles are snappy, with some really nice animation. The writing was very humorous at times, and the plot was very clear and easy to follow. The map and quest are large enough to feel epic, but not overwhelming. Every side quest feels meaningful and ties into the story or main characters in some way, which made me feel like I was never wasting my time completing them. The weak points for me would be that the character portraits don't seem as well done as the pixel art, and some of the more serious plot points don't seem as well written as the humorous portions. If you're looking for a fun, SNES style rpg with a nice story, definitely give this one a try!
Rise of the Third Power è una gradita sorpresa.
