Simultaneously using its charm and creepiness to great effect, Toree 3D is an adorable little game with an amazing soundtrack and wonderful art style. It has just enough content to keep you hooked, and at 99 cents is an instant recommendation for anyone looking for a quick platforming fix.

Going in with diminished expectations no-doubt coloured our impressions, but our brief time with Toree 3D was undeniably delightful. For significantly less than the price of a decent cup of coffee, you get an enjoyably bite-sized, colourful 3D platformer with great music and a fun aesthetic that doesn't take itself seriously in the slightest — and it doesn't stick around long enough to get boring, or for its weak points (and inevitable lack of depth) to become an issue. Big studios who feel obliged to stretch games out for dozens of hours could learn a thing or two from its brevity.

Like I said, there are all kinds of really terrible games lingering around the outskirts of the eShop, trying to sucker you in with low prices before they instantly reveal their awfulness. Toree 3D may look like it belongs with those other bottom feeders, but if you give it a chance, you’ll probably be surprised and kind of impressed by what you find.

The biggest pity is that the developers were so modest in their scope. Perhaps this little experiment is just to test the waters and get some money together for a more ambitious second project. I hope so, because Toree 3D has a lot of potential to be a more full-featured homage to B-tier platformers. As it stands here, though, it's a moment or two of fun. Nothing more, nothing less.

I rather like the mid-’90s 3DO/Saturn look, and there are a few pleasant music tracks, as well. But when I put the nostalgic presentation and low price aside, I’m left with the realization that Toree 3D is a short-lived game I just didn’t find particularly fun. The level design is hit-or-miss, and the camera needs more attention. I’d direct players on a budget to Macbat 64: Journey of a Nice Chap instead.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is very good. I really like the art style, it feels like and N64 or PS1 game. The music fits the levels well but there are some tracks that are better than others. The gameplay is solid, and it controls well. The platforming can be a little challenging at times but it's always fair. I can see inspiration from games like Kirby and Sonic in the levels and themes. There is also a reason to replay the levels in order to get a good time or collect everything. This game also has unlockable which I really like. Overall this game is amazing and one of the best Indie games I've played in a while. Plus it's only a dollar.

Slight spoiler thing for the Devs if they read this.
In two of the levels there was some creepy pasta / fourth wall breaks. I have no problem with the creepy thing but it seems like it wasn't elaborated on or that it was a scrapped idea. I don't like the code rifts through. It just makes it feel like, hey this is a video game and the codes breaking. This game has such a cool and cohesive theme going with it through out all its levels that I just think it was unnecessary. I've seen other games do this but usually the whole game is based around being weird and having the world get distorted. This is just my opinion and this game really is amazing. I look forward to seeing what gets made in future by you guys.

YetThis game is worth buying for the aesthetic alone: the environments, the adorable character designs, the music they're all perfect. Yet somehow they managed to pack in a SOLID hybrid platformer/racer on top of that. It isn't hard to just complete the stages, and unless you undertake the real challenge this game has to offer—the complete mastery of its controls—it will be a short game for you.

If any screenshots of this game caught your interest, then don't worry; it's exactly the game you're hoping it is. I would love to see these characters again in a sequel. This is definitely one indie developer to watch!

Toree 3D is a very short game in the style of early 3D platformers from the 90s.

    PROS:

THE NOSTALGIA FACTOR WORKS: Toree 3D does a decent job of looking like one of those ugly but colorful Nintendo 64 games.

CHEAP AND QUICK: It costs close to nothing, and it doesn't last long enough to become boring.

IT DOES HAVE A CERTAIN CHARM: Toree 3D is colorful, mildly fun, and it won't frustrate you enough to leave a bad memory.

    CONS:

GAMEJAM-LEVEL QUALITY: I cannot understand all the positive reviews for a game that looks like someone's first experiment in Unity. From the uninspired level design to the uneven difficult, Toree 3D can only be described as amateurish game.

SLOPPY DESIGN: I spent 20 frustrating minutes to beat a level that felt weirdly difficult, only to discover that Toree has two jump button: one for high and one for low jumps. Pity that the game never bothered to tell me. This game is full of inconsistencies like that one. Rather than a well thought out game, Toree feels like the developers were making things up as they went.
