As a huge Kirby fan, it pains me to say that I'm very disappointed with Team Kirby Clash Deluxe. From the manipulative freemium model to gameplay that devolves into an annoying exercise of patience; Kirby has definitely seen better days.
In the context of being a free extra attached to Planet Robobot, I thought Team Kirby Clash was great. Like this? Not so much. [Issue #28 – July/August 2017, p. 19]
GO team kirby! This game sends you off to a super-fun flying start, before becoming more slow and fremium. Gem apples are annoying to get after you get more and more achievements. I reccomend being the beam mage, and keeping at least two characters of the same job in your team, for better efficiency (just ditch healmore). if you are willing to spend on this, just buy 50 gem apples and leave it at that. It has decent internet features, but I just really wish it wasn't so much like lesser games. Kirby deserves better! i got really mad when I had to spend loads of gem apples on normal levels. Ordeals, Acceptable, I guess (Except Pyribbet's insane 30 apples). I found the format of Each Level being its own boss really different and fun, But It's VERY annoying how the power tablets are rarer in the later levels. So, now I hardly ever see them and almost never get to Pull off the amazing Team meteor, and i BECAME REALLY BAD AT THE RYTHEM GAME. Oops, caps lock. The Jobs were great, and this game incorperates kirby's cuteness potential well (had to say it). I feel This Game Needs Maybe Some Powerups, Purposeful sidequests, And I'd Be blown Away By Having Meta Knight Playable.
Nintendo makes some choices we don't like, one being a free to play Kirby game based on a mini game of planet robobot, which is great on it's own. As a rpg lover, this game was a **** it was a free to play game which meant, tadah, in game purchases. I been playing this game for weeks, with friends and on my own. I haven't spent a single penny, but the buddy i play with have and there's a huge advantage. They could buy double xp, get more fragments and by extension wait less time for vigor. Armor is easier to obtain and the part that makes me livid the most is the part where the game makes you use valuable gem apples, currency that is used for everything, to unlock a new quest. This game has some upside though, it creates impressive and even fun multiplayer gameplay, tough and planning for solo, and street pass allows you to use other players as your A.I. Companions. There are ways to obtain gem apples aviat being tedious. Like the hero quests, small side quests that help out, and the other method the gem apple tree, which at the start of the game gives you a nice 5 apples every twelve hours, of course this tree can grow and produce more apples by buying apples. Not exactly helpful at all. The game has a lot of fanservice and I enjoy it more than that, especially the final boss. Overall this game is very enjoyable and worth a try since you can play it for free and free to complete.
Team Kirby Clash Deluxe -
Of all the barefaced money-siphoning tactics implemented by Nintendo in recent years, making a carbon copy of a multiplayer boss rush minigame from the last REAL Kirby game and gating the progression of fights behind a paywall is perhaps the most cynical attempt yet.
As with the original Kirby Clash minigame, You get to fight a series of boss monsters in single-screen featureless arenas as a party of four, playing one of four classes (sword, hammer, healer or mage). New fights have been added and you now have the option of recruiting generally competent AI assistants either from stock, or street-and-spotpassing. Beyond the first handful of fights and your starting equipment, everything in the game must be unlocked with the premium currency of Gem Apples, the starting supply and daily replenishing source of which will of course not get you very far.
Unfortunately, the entire game quickly devolves into a pay-to-win mess. Spend apples to unlock enemies; spend apples on better equipment to actually be able to beat those enemies; spend apples to unlock better equipment for the classes you aren't even maining just so you can complete the class-specific level tasks to earn a tiny fraction of those apples back; lather, rinse, repeat.
The fact that you need to grind fights repeatedly to accumulate extra materials before being allowed to pay for the weapon does not make it any less pay-to-win; you simply progress down the equipment list grabbing whatever has the highest numbers on it at the time. The materials system only serves to pad out the time you'll spend playing -- which, incidentally, you are also restricted on, as each fight costs "vigor" of which you have a limited supply and recharges very slowly.
The only difficulty curve that exists in the game is the time limit in which you have to fight the enemies, and how much damage they do if you don't have the best available armor. Every single fight is otherwise a plodding, uneventful grind of trying to smack the biggest numbers you can out of your opponent. The visual aesthetic is well realized and all the equipment and effects are quite snazzy to look at, but it ultimately ends up feeling like you're playing a very expensive mobile game. What is here has very little to do with intuitive game design or Kirby in general, and everything to do with sugar-coating a minimalist concept in the interest of lining Nintendo's pockets.
