The Binding of Isaac: Repentance is an incredible achievement that goes beyond just being a DLC expansion. This is another load of thread connecting yet more pieces to the potential of the already brilliant base game. With all of these plates spinning, it's impossible to know how well a run is going to go at any given time, but it remains incredibly fun trying to figure that out.
The game is too good. Great mechanics, and bosses, with some exception like Blob or Delirium. The game is designed in a difficult way but it never feels like it's the game fault, it's commonly the player's fault so if you loose too much is just a skill issue.
There are persons saying that the game its too hard, i must say... If Edmund McMillan want the game to be hard, it will be, The Binding Of Isaac: repentence is the most Beautiful dlc i have ever seen in a game, it expands the universe in 100% and give this game the end that all of us wanted... If you are saying that this is bad, im going have to say, ur playing wrong, and the worst thing about this game its that it ends! And when ends, you can play whitout losting the fun, If this is not a masterpiece I don't know what it is
Repentance doesn't add anything particularly game-altering to the formula; it's not going to win you over if you don't like this style of roguelike. What it does do, however, is add huge amounts of content to the already massive base game (and other DLCS) that is The Binding of Isaac. On top of that, there's some even more hardcore endgame content, including a series of new, game-breaking characters to unlock. Not bad for $15.
I really love Isaac, I do. But I'm kinda mixed when it comes to this DLC.
Recently they've added far too many unfair, run-ending rooms with nothing but spikes and turrets (some of them both shielded and in motion) inside. I may simply be unlucky, but I am encountering them far too frequently as of late, and, to be honest, I believe that such rooms should not exist in this game to begin with. I have nothing against the general increase in difficulty that Repentance offers, far from it. Most of the changes that this DLC introduces are actually quite appropriate, and they make the overall experience more balanced and gratifying. I even agree with some of the most controversial nerfs, and I appreciate the balance changes to items that previously were not worth taking at all. But I think that these new maze-like room layouts with lots of spikes and turrets are a step too far. Some of my recent runs (even the powerful ones) ended prematurely because of these rooms. It's a very cheap way of artificially increasing the game's difficulty to a point in which it no longer feels fun. Some of the balancing decisions are also questionable - like the recent removal of the usefulness of the donation machine. I guess I love this DLC and hate it at the same time.
It's everything you liked about Binding of Isaac Afterbirth+, but made worse!
I love a lot of the additions to the enemy/boss pool and the graphical improvements are nice. Everything else inside this expansion makes the game worse.
Afterbirth+ is the definitive version of Isaac. Repentance is the Robocop 3 of this series - let's all pretend it didn't exist.
I consider myself to be an Isaac super fan. I've been playing since day 1 that Rebirth released, and have put in approximately 1700 hrs into the game across PC, PS4 and Vita. I've achieved 1000000% (full completion) on PS4 and continue to play regularly. I was very excited about this expansion and stayed up to play it the night it came out. Now 10 days later I've put 40hrs into the game and I've only won 2 out of about 50 runs. To put this into perspective on Afterbirth+ my win percentage was approximately 80%, and now it's dropped to 4%. This is an unreasonable difficulty increase. The enemies shoot faster and further, many items have been nerfed, and the item pool is further diluted with bad items. I like the design of the new bosses, there are many cool additions, and the amount of content is staggering, but none of this matters if the spirit and fun of the game has been drained. I no longer enjoy playing my favorite game of all time.
Maybe you're now expected to reroll your run until you get a powerful item, but that's not how I play. I loved the randomness, and overcoming adversity, and if I lost, it felt like I just got a string of bad luck. Now, the game feels like it wants you to fail and it's being malicious. I'm going to go back to playing Afterbirth+ and in no way would I recommend getting this expansion.
