Whilst I was aware of The Escapists, it was never a game on my most wanted list, but having now played for a good number of hours and still only scratching the surface, I can wholeheartedly recommend picking this up and get involved with one of the first great indie titles of 2015.
The Escapist is one the most INTENSE and AWESOME game, it's 8 - bit graphic looks very cool and it takes brain and brawn to escape all the prisons, you start of in a cell with some items. You must gather more items and craft and work out and do jobs to escape, you have more than one escape route to take, would you rather dig out of your cell or in solitary? Or you will cut the fences while wearing a guard uniform to run? The choice is yours.
This game worths every penny you use to buy it, so what are you waiting for? BUY IT NOW!!!
i found the game at first quite poor but once you understand how to play it there is alot of fun to be had.
i racked up over 50hrs on this game
best advice i can give anyone is to go to the escapist wiki page on crafting and take pics of each page on your smart phone so know what your capable of crafting,
it's very rewarding to escape a prison, the game comes with 5 prisions each present different challenges their is also a new level to download called alcatraz for only £2.
A mite obtuse at first and sometimes unfair in its logic, sure, but a recommended game and one sure to have people poring over pulling off their perfect Shawshank Redemption-esque escape for years to come.
The Escapists may look almost like a casual game, but it's exactly the opposite, a deep sandbox experience that needs an 'investment' from the player to become really enjoyable.
With its truncated clock system, The Escapists balances two opposing forces against the player’s own patience with notable mechanical leverage no matter where you’re coming from. On one hand, I ended up feeling gratified and at peace doing menial mini-game-like tasks, including exercising and laundry duties. On the other, it seems like Team 17 and Mouldy Toof Studios don’t want you playing the role of a prisoner at all.
While the visuals and combat are quite simple and not blow you away, The Escapists provides a surprisingly deep game that offers plenty of room for creativity despite the illusion of a rigid framework around your inmate's daily activities.
What looks like a bright and breezy game turns out to be an incredibly stiff challenge that can occasionally be hugely rewarding. More often than not, however, The Escapists is about as pleasurable as a swift kick in the bollocks.
So much fun. Great design and a lot of cool ideas. Entertaining and worth the price. 8bits pays once again when it takes to old school players. Appreciated!
Very unique game and liked how every prison essentially got harder and required different ways to escape. Also so many ways to escape made this game very immersive as well. It did get quite repetitive making your character stronger and smarter. It also felt too luck based at times but overall great fun.
The home console port of this game massively improved on the bugs encountered in the PC version. However, that also brought in one of the most annoying bugs I've ever experienced in a video game. If you play this game and then let another user play it, the first user has a chance to lose ALL of their progress. This one bug, being so often and annoying, dampened my opinion of this near-perfect game.
The Escapist is a great 8 bit indie game. Certainly worth buying. It's great fun as you get to plot and execute escapes from prison. It can be frustrating when you forget you had one contraband item on you as you walked through security. Or you have to imagine someone snitched, or your room is bugged As you can't figure out how the guards caught you , and you have to start on your escape all over. And it's a nice touch being able to name all the guards and prisoners if you want to.
I had hoped the Xbox One would have better controls than the PC. Movement is much easier. But some control systems (like giving quest items to other prisoners) seem very awkward. Either my posters are bugged or I just can' t seem to figure out how to use them after the first time. The fighting in the first prison (not tutorial) was disappointingly easy, compared to the PC version. And the characters run like they all related to the flash.
But by the time I got to the 2nd prison it was starting to seem almost as challenging as the PC. And that is a whole bunch of fun. If they do some patches and fix the smaller annoying issues, this game would be a 10 in the 8 bit, Indie, and replay ability categories IMHO.
SummaryThe Escapists gives players the chance to experience a light-hearted insight into everyday prison life with the main objective being that of escaping.
