Although never innovative, Darksiders is a rare example of a game that borrows heavily from other franchises and still possesses its own identity. Worth playing for the brilliantly bloodletting combat alone, Darksiders: Warmastered Edition is a more than capable version for Wii U owners to experience their own affordable apocalyptic adventure.

Aside from the griffin sequence, there’s not a lot holding Darksiders: Warmastered Edition down. It remains an excellent heavy metal homage to Zelda games that’s satisfying and quite lengthy. I enjoy it more than its sequel, although that’s also a great game. The only real downside is that this game is on the Wii U, not the Switch, so it probably won’t get the attention it deserves.

Despite being the worst version of the game, halfway between the last and the current gen, Darksiders Warmastered Edition on Wii U instills a little more life in the dying Nintendo console, offering a strong action adventure at a bargain price.

It's a remarkably solid experience that combines a distinct aesthetic with varied gameplay, satisfying combat and fast-paced exploration, all centred around a story about the apocalypse.

Being aAfter all these years, this is still an extremely fun game - and now Wii U gamers can also experience it in modern day's standards. Being a Zelda clone with God of War combat, its fun factor is as high as either of those franchises - the game is just a tad short, clocking in at less than 20 hours. However, dungeons are nicely designed and satisfying, while the content in between them is fun and exciting to play.

The story is interesting and the game looks and plays well. There is some debate about it actually being 1080p on Wii U or not - I can't say anything about this since I haven't checked, nor do I have the time right now, but this is an irrelevant point to me anyway because I sit 4 meters away from my screen, making the difference between 1080p and 720p almost unnoticable to begin with - and the game just looks very nice anyway, so I don't really care. There's also a framedrop here and there, but it doesn't do much to disturb the nice flow of gameplay and all in all, it's just great fan service and an epic fulfilment of THQ Nordic's promise. Where other devs would have jumped ship with some lame excuse, these guys kept their word and I will not forget that. They did not release a broken port, but instead took their time to optimize it and release it as a nice experience. THQ Nordic is on my good side and as a thank you for their efforts (and with the prospect of imminent fanboys that will degrade this version) I will give this game a 10 instead of the 9 that really goed through my head.

If you have never played this game, you need to buy it. It's as good on Wii U as anywhere else and it is a nice true swansong for the console. It will be some of the best bang for your buck in years, especially now that it is remastered and no longer feels outdated - you can find it for less than 20 bucks brand new. Go out there and get it!

A masterful re-up with a great story, a beautifully grim world and exciting, fast-paced gameplay. And that price point makes it essential. I have never played any of the Darksiders games. Not for lack of wanting, to be honest I’m not really sure why I never played them. I had always heard good things about them, especially amongst the PSVG staff. I specifically made sure not to look at any past reviews or gameplay so I would have a fresh take. Expand

ComparedI fell in love with Darksiders 2 on the Wii U, so much so that I installed Steam a couple of years ago purely to play the original. Compared to DS2, the combat is slower, the world is way smaller, and the loot/gear/skill tree systems are simplistic -- on the other hand, it's much tighter and more focused, and might actually be more fun than the sequel. Good voice acting, cool chunky comic-book art style, and a pretty compelling apocalyptic story that unfolds rapidly. I picked up the Wii U version mostly for off-TV play, so I can lie on the couch and play only on the gamepad. The remastering looks great, the graphics more detailed and fluid, both on the gamepad and on a big screen. Really enjoying playing as War again, especially after getting the scythe and some upgraded moves, which makes the combat a lot more fun.

Edit: After finishing the game again, I came back to downgrade this to an 8, purely because of bugs. Still a fun game, but the bugs are pretty bad at times -- a half-dozen full freeze-ups where I had to shut down the Wii U (not just the gamepad), and some super odd bugs with sinking through floors and falling into nothingness...that made it almost impossible to finish one of the mini-bosses.

The aesthetic is that of a dark and apocalyptic comic book, well implemented game mechanics and with a decent length, around 20 or 30 hours, perhaps more playing calmly or if a puzzle gets stuck.

If I don't give you one more point it's because the wii u version comes with a bug that makes the game hang randomly when crossing certain portals that are presented throughout the adventure. Which makes me think that the port is not completely solid.

Perhaps recommended in other versions as in pc, for example, that It seems that the problems previously described do not occur.
