If we cannot have an actually F-Zero, FAST Racing NEO definitely is a great substitute. This is a fun and challenging Wii U racer that will keep you entertained for a long while, and an outstanding experience especially for a relatively unknown indie studio.

If you love racing games - and maybe even if you don't but are willing to try - be sure to pick this up. We don't think you'll be disappointed.

A magnificent visual environment, a fitting soundtrack, very challenging races that are perfectly matched with the controllers and its multiplayer modes make FAST Racing Neo one of the best indie games on the Wii U and a compulsory option for fans of fast racing games.

Fans of those types of racing games will be in awe of what Shin’en has accomplished here. I know it is cliché to say, but please give this team the rights to make a new F-Zero game. Fast Racing NEO is the closest and best thing to happen to the genre in years.

FAST Racing Neo isn't a great game merely because the genre is lacking, it actually stands out on its own merits as a fantastic racer and a must buy for anyone who has been waiting years for a new game from the F-Zero or WipEout mould.

FAST Racing NEO is an impressive racing game that requires a lot out of its players, as a lack of customizable controls, and the steep learning curve really limits the title's accessibility. If you're down for a challenge, though, then step right up.

Even at maximum velocity it fails to stir the blood like the games to which it's most indebted. [Feb 2016, p.120]

It's an indie game found on the eShop for less than twenty bucks, and it's gameplay and presentation reflects a level of quality that many high profile games would find enviable. With tight controls, varied courses, and a challenging, but satisfying difficulty curve FAST Racing NEO manages to impress with great success.

The game sets itself apart from other futuristic racing games by introducing a mechanic that makes you phase between two colors. If your color matches the obstacle you drive over you will get a boost, but if the color is wrong you will be slowed down. Mastering this tecnique is integral to doing well in the game, and offers a layer of depth that keeps you on your toes and simultaneously sucks you into the gorgeous game even more.

With a high skill ceiling, ten vehicles, sixteen courses, four difficulties, online and split-screen multiplayer the game encourages you to play it both as a competitive game and as a party game that will have you and your friends at the edge of your seat.

There are a few design oversights that might leave a sense of confusion or minor annoyance. With split-screen multiplayer you can only play full cups and not individual stages. It's a shame if you dislike some courses in a cup and would rather skip over them. There is also the occasional odd speed bump within the course that seem nonsensical and is not telegraphed. It makes it look like you are doing something wrong, when you seemingly are not.

That said, the minor complaints are so far outweighed by the positives of the game that it is hard to detract the game based on it. It is the first game I have played from Shin'en and I'm eager to see what more they have produced and will produce in the future.

The game looks fantastic on WiiU and shows what can be done with some incredible coding and technical prowess. Shin'en have become known for squeezing the most out of Nintendo hardware. Their mastery of their craft is on display with 60 fps anti grav racing. What is even more impressive is they found a simple yet interesting way to add a bit of extra depth to racing. You swap colors to hit color corresponding bits of the track to gain a boost.

If there is one criticism I have; it would be that the UI is a bit spartan and plain looking. But for a game that costs $15 its hard to quibble.

It could have be a really good game if some more development would have put into it.
