A stylish and evocative 8-bit representation of the '70s criminal Milan, unluckily dragged down by an unbalanced and often repetitive shooter gameplay.

I love games that I can get into the story, into the characters and have a reasonable challenge in the combat and gameplay. I love progressing in video games and the satisfaction of completing each level. Milanoir may not be my cup of tea because of the lack of satisfying these areas, but it may be yours with its merits in the sound and artwork, and if you REALLY, REALLY enjoy a challenging and somewhat frustrating game.

I love Italian films and I would go as far to say that it’s probably one of my most favourite genre’s when it comes to movies. As you canI love Italian films and I would go as far to say that it’s probably one of my most favourite genre’s when it comes to movies. As you can imagine then I was quite looking forward to Milanoir bevause it looked like it had all the things I like about Italian films. Unfortunately though I was a little disappointed with the end product and whilst it had a couple of enjoyable aspects for me to get to grips with in the end it just had too many shortcomings and unfortunately that’s all I remembered about the game. It’s not all doom and gloom though because the story that’s in the game is actually pretty decent and kept me intrigued throughout my time with the game. In fact the story is the only thing that made me want to continue with the game because the gameplay has a myriad of problems which frustrated me to say the least. Whilst the game boasts some unique bosses it wasn’t enough to save the dull and boring combat. The combat also had the problem of being very difficult as well and when you combine this high difficulty with the dullness of it playing the game ends up being a real chore, which is a shame. Another thing that holds the combat back are the horrible controls. Aiming and shooting remained awkward throughout my playthrough and sometimes the controls didn’t even respond at all which in turn made me that frustrated that I nearly turned the game straight off. Unfortunately these issues don’t get any better at all so any good things the game gives you are forgotten quite quickly because of this. I did however end up completing the game despite the problems it suffers with and in terms of content there isn’t much for you to get through. This is probably a good thing because the content that is present doesn’t have much variety present in it at all. This lack of variety and lack of content means that in terms of replayability the game hardly has none and once you complete the game you’re highly unlikely to return back to it. Without a doubt my favourite thing about this game was the presentation side of things. Visually the game has a nice and gritty look to it and in a way it makes the story come alive a bit more. The sound design also makes the story come alive in a way and I must admit that I did enjoy the soundtrack included in the game. At the end of the day Milanoir has a great concept that probably garnered quite a lot of interest from quite a few people. Unfortunately though this great concept is lost quite quickly due to the game failing in a number of key areas and in the end I can’t recommend this game to you because it got more things wrong than it got right.
