Playing Streets of Rage 4 is an absolute no-brainer and it is without doubt one of the best games of the year.

Whether you’re a fan of the originals or not, Streets of Rage 4 is a blast from start to finish. Satisfying combat, incredible music and visuals and tons to unlock mean this should be sticking around on your hard drive for some time yet. A lack of 4 player online is a disappointment, but otherwise what’s here more than makes up for the long wait.

It's been more than 25 years since the last Streets of Rage game, and while ostensibly, Streets of Rage 4 might seem like more of the same, there's no way that could ever be considered a bad thing. Streets of Rage 4 is well worth the wait.

Taking a franchise as treasured as Streets of Rage and updating it was never going to be an easy task, but we can't imagine that any self-respecting fan of the series will be displeased with what has been achieved here. Streets of Rage 4 walks that fine line between paying tribute to its predecessors and forging its own unique path and feels like an evolution and a revolution at the same time. The gameplay is unmistakably faithful to the originals, but the addictive combo-heavy mechanics, gorgeous presentation and robust multiplayer options add a whole new layer of complexity, resulting in a game that fans and newcomers alike will enjoy no end. Let's hope we don't have to wait another 26 years for a sequel.

A new adventure from the Streets of Rage universe, with all the essence, with the main characters and with all the spirit of the 90s. Go back into the streets and fight with all the villains to clear the city of crime and corruption.

With several wonderfully constructed set-pieces and backdrops thrown in at regular intervals, picking up Streets of Rage 4 is something that we will do at some point again in the future. Thanks to its excellent feel, wide range of characters, and excellent soundtrack. With the return of the original composers in addition to new artists, the music here shifts between modern renditions of classic tunes to experimental techno and even some bass music. Not everything feels as timeless as the original soundtrack and the modern flourishes can feel out of step with the decidedly simple design. Not in the sense that modern electronic music is not as inventive or energetic or suitable for a beat-em up – but in the sense that perhaps Streets of Rage 4 doesn’t quite do enough to warrant the fresh coat of paint. And fresh set of beats.

Streets of Rage 4 is both a sequel and a throwback to the original 2D brawler series. The gameplay has been tweaked and the presentation updated for the modern day, but it’s still an unabashedly retro experience that will appeal to a select few.

Streets of Rage 4 delivers the greatest hits of the classic series and is at its best when played with at least one friend. If the primary focus was delivering a traditional Streets of Rage experience with a modern coat of paint, it absolutely succeeds. But while it layers on a few new and interesting mechanics, it’s still a very conservative update to the quarter-century-old format that feels like a slave to the past.

The online co-op which works asStreets Of Rage 4 provides many hours of replay ability and a wealth of un-lockable items and characters. The online co-op which works as you’d expect from the franchise’s newest release unless partnered with that random gamer with the dial up broadband speed as your team mate. There is 4 player local but not online unfortunately, but likely a wise decision to keep the game as playable as possible and to at least offer an online option for those without couch co-op buddies to hit the streets with. The soundtrack is as good as and even better than previous games in the series, and there's the option to have the retro soundtrack that you love and will hum to from memory. Streets Of Rage 4 feels exactly how it should, it takes a step forward in the franchise without leaving the old fans behind. Everything you enjoyed from the old games remains in tact while adding to the overall enjoyment the long time series has always delivered. I have a feeling as a gamer who is old enough to remember the awe from the release of the first game will undoubtedly fall in love all over again and new players will still get the same draw we did so many years ago. The return of old foe and the variety of new keeps things fresh and always planning a new strategy for victory. While the classic moves remain the new concept integrate with the quality you’d expect as a veteran of the franchise. The environments are well crafted and transition very nicely as you traverse thru the streets of rage. At the end of the day, everything you’d expect is back, and it's nostalgic as you wished. Smashing cars, breaking mailboxes, picking up pipes, eating plump turkeys, and laying some sweet co-op beat-down on the streets. The graphics are stylized and sharp, with smooth animations. Controls are responsive and tight. So, whether you played the franchise over 2 decades ago, or are a newcomer you simply shouldn’t hesitate, dive in with a buddy and rage on the streets. The price of admission is more than fair considering it comes in less than half priced the other games of the series when they released, so as a fan of the long running franchise this is an absolute must buy for your Xbox One library.
