Now, 11 years after that release, a new generation of players will be able to experience the incomparable action and drama of the Yakuza series with the rebuilt-from-scratch HD remake exclusive to PlayStation 4, Yakuza Kiwami.

"Kiwami" means Extreme, and the game takes that concept to heart. It's not an HD-remaster or up-rezzing of PS2-era textures. Yakuza Kiwami was recreated from the ground up exclusively for the PlayStation 4. That means every visual element was optimized for the 1080p/60fps environment, every line of the script was re-recorded by series actors and for the first time in the West, gamers will be able to hear the original Japanese language track.

Then there's the game itself! The PS2-era brawling gameplay is refined for the current gen with Kazuma Kiryu fighting his way through the ranks of Yakuza, only to wind up protecting a young girl whose aunt (who also happens to be Kiryu's childhood sweetheart) is missing...along with 10 billion yen.

Yakuza Kiwami, a 15-year update of the game that goes beyond the technical by introducing mechanics inherited from Yakuza 0.

Yakuza Kiwami is a terrific remake with a great story, characters and gameplay, and it runs great on Xbox One.

Yakuza 0 might be the better game, but Yakuza Kiwami is the best way to experience where the series began. Additions like 'Majima Everywhere' inject a sense of knockabout fun to proceedings, while cracking heads is a persistent, unending delight. There's no excuse not to dive right into Yakuza Kiwami this very second.

The plot and substories aren’t as involving as the prequel but Yakuza Kiwami is a much more introductory and inviting title; by being a bit more scaled-down it opens itself up to a much wider audience. If you missed out on Yakuza 0 when that released, start here instead.

Entertaining remake of a classic game with well-known strengths and weaknesses, but nonetheless one of the best stories in the franchise.

All you really do is watch a cutscene, run to an area, watch a cutscene, have a fist fight, run to an area, watch a cutscene, run to an area, have a fist fight. That's it! The cutscenes seem to take ages to get to the point too. I honestly wasn't paying attention to half of it (it's all in Japanese so it wasn't like I could follow it without looking) and yet I followed the plot fine. As someone who loves Metal Gear Solid I can deal with long cutcenes, but they were just too long in this.
The fighting is fun, if stupid, judging from this game every other person in Japan is a thug and wants to kill you!
Saying all this, I thoroughly enjoyed myself playing this, I just dont' entirely know why.
Maybe it's the mountain of side stories, maybe it's the cheese factor, maybe I just don't know :D

You play as Kazuma Kiryu, a Promising member of the Yakuza about to be rewarded his own family. But unspeakable transgressions devolve into sending Kiryu to prison for 10 Years. Kiryu is a model prisoner, shy of a few issues when he arrives and is released on good behavior. Having avoided trouble in prison, he's lost a lot of his fighting edge. Now currently excommunicated from the Yakuza, Kiryu must figure out what's going on the Yakuza ranks, and re-learn how to fight as he did and become the Dragon of Dojima once more. To tell you any more would be riddled with spoilers. The Game system is loaded to the brim with fast-paced action and tons of fighting. Like tons of fighting. Street punks talking trash beat the crap out of them, Traitor to the Yakuza, beat the crap out of him, so on, and so forth. This game is a remake, utilizing the engine made for Yakuza 0, giving a fresh polish to the 13-year-old title. Kiryu has 4 fighting styles you can swap between while fighting, creating a pulse-pounding game in every fight. Loaded with minigames, all of which are fairly in-depth, keeping you with something to do at any given time. Yakuza Kiwami is just packed with content, and if you haven't played the older titles, here's your chance to start from the first game! Fans of the franchise will be delighted with the updates, and smoothing of the story and newcomers to the series will get to start on the newest engine for the games. Expand

After spending 25 very enjoyable hours with the game, I was served with a long a tedious fight (takes about 10 to 15 minutes to go through) that ends... with the dread car chase scene. One of these shooter scenes that was popular in games a decade ago - god knows why, because they seem to only be frustrating. In this case, the shooter sequence is beyond frustrating, punishing to a fault, and may make you vomit as the camera keeps swinging to make things harder.
I gave it a good try (10 attempts or so) but eventually, I gave up.
No game is good enough to be worth going through such a pile of crap.
Oh and did I mention you can't save at any point? So if you quit, you'll start the whole chapter from the beginning (the 15 minutes fight included).
    Dreadful and insulting.
