Overall High On Life is a great game and it's very funny. Gunplay is fun and satisfying, alongside the great addition of the "knifeplay". If you like Rick and Morty's sense of humor you are at the right place (and there are a lot of jokes hidden everywhere in the maps)!

High on Life was stuttering and buggy at launch. The jokes are a hit and a miss. Can get annoying but there is an option to lower the banter between you and the gun. Gameplay is basic. Story is okay. High on Life is an average at best. It's best to play gamepass than paying $60 for it. Not worth it

Gamepass fodder for the win! I guess because it's in GamePass day one that it must be good- not. At best this vulgar game is a 7. Definitely would recommend your kids playing this game because the content and language is not suitable at all.

I knew absolutely nothing about this game and was pleasantly surprised with the intro and almost delighted when I recognised Justin Roiland as I’m a huge R&M fan.

This is where it started to go downhill for me, the dialogue begins quirky and humorous and quickly gets old which is unfortunate as that was the only thing distracting from the dull gameplay. Also, I love I good soundtrack in a game and none of the music was really floating my boat at all.

I can see why people like the game. In my mind its perfect for those who want to chill out in a world they’re comfortable in, with zero stress and no worries. You can plod along, tick boxes and nothing gets out of second gear. That’s perfectly fine to be enjoyable for people.

I gave it 5/10 because in terms of my enjoyment it’d be around a 3 but I can understand how it might be a 7/8 for people. I don’t understand how anyone could give it higher because the actual gameplay just isn’t there. I’m not saying it’s terrible but certainly not good.

Performance was fine by the way.

High On Life doesn't stand out on many things, but it does well what it sets out to do. It has a fun writing, a solid story, good shooting mechanics and powerups, nice overall gameplay, cool environments and it's pretty good looking. To me, it felt like Justin Roiland's take on HALO. As crazy as it sounds. One of the gun even feels like the Needler.

The humor is definitely not for everybody, but it's the thing that mostly kept me going. I really enjoyed it. The game, as a shooter, felt really competent as well (and I loved the jetpack). From platforming to fighting hordes of enemies, they managed to get a good pace going, packing funny jokes, intense moments and collectables all around the areas. Besides, there's just a lot of things to do in such a short game. For example, you can actually watch entire movies on a cinema or on your living room. It's quite nice.

The thing is that there's not a lot to say past that point.

I had a lot of fun with it, but that's it. I wasn't a fan of some of the boss fights, using the other guns (aside from Creature) didn't feel as cool as using Kenny, they reused too much of the same environments for missions, not every NPC you interact has something interesting going and the ending kinda just... ends, you know?

High On Life is a pretty solid game. It's not impressive, it's not for everyone and definitely won't be your highlight FPS, but it is a nice fun shooter. If you have nothing else to play, maybe try this one out.

Overall I enjoyed my time with high on life. The metroidvania gameplay kept things interesting. I was surprised by the quality of this production in terms of graphics and animation. Especially compared to previous lower budget squanch game outings.

On series x I encountered various game breaking bugs. Thankfully the restart checkpoint feature fixed most of these for me.

If I'm honest I probably wouldn't have bought this but it was a day one gamepass release and surprisingly good so I played through to the end. It's quite long overall around 15-30 hrs depending on how much you like the metroidvania collectathon tucked into its DNA.

I found the soundtrack to be too much and ended up muting it to focus on the humourous dialogue instead. The jokes come thick and fast - it's kind of a 'throw everything at the wall and who cares what sticks attitude'. And so some of it was hilarious, some just plain messed up. It goes without saying if you're not a fan of Justin roilands brand of surrealist, often sexualised humour then this game will not entertain you.

I recommend trying it on Game Pass if you really want to play it cause there's a lot of game breaking bugs on release. I found a few, but managed to find work arounds in the game to get by but you might not be so lucky.

It's also really short, I think I beat it in under 20 hours & I did almost everything. I beat it in a weekend, basically. Overall, was a fun 20 hours for sure.

Overall, was a fun 20 hours for sure. Lots of great humor, most of it low brow but still pretty good. A lot of bodily fluid/function jokes, some high brow stuff thrown in there as well. Some secret upgrades for guns, secret areas, a secret boss or two, etc. Plays like Doom, gotta move constantly so you don't get hit, health regens, best gun is the pistol, tho. I killed pretty much every guy with the pistol, other guns just don't compare to it until you get the last one which is basically a BFG. Last boss fight was the hardest, all boss fights were fun. One bugged out, had to reload. Other than that, nice fun game.

Despite the very bright graphics and excellent design of everything and everything, including the level design, the musical accompaniment is not always good. More precisely, it is good in everything except the battle with enemies. I don't know how they overlooked this moment, but playing against enemies sounds like a terrible cacophony.

The plot in the game is not bad, but there are a lot of unnecessary and completely unnecessary dialogues, there is a classic drama from scratch, and the same empty resolution of this conflict, and a completely disappointing ending spoiled the impression quite well. But the most important thing is the artificial stretching of the gameplay for repeated exploration of locations, where the reward for this is insignificant and insignificant. Fights with enemies are mediocre, although the bosses are original and it was really interesting to fight against them.

In general, I recommend the game, it is still a good story shooter, of which there are very few now. Play with Game Pass and buy later at 75% off. Glory to Ukraine!

As a shooter, sadly medicore but fun dialogs and "fresh" story if you think that aliens snorting human DNA to make them high is fun.

Hey, and again, it's made by those geniuses that came up with Rick and Morty... if that is enough for you to get moist enough to drop your controller because of how moist that makes you, dive right in! It has some nice funny dialog, some wacky (Roiland style) TV Shows and some more wacky stuff to keep morons like me entertained, but still a 5/10 sadly.

    Long read:
Of course, you MUST play this if you are one of the "R&M fanatics" who thinks anything done by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon MUST be good by definition, moronic critics like me be damned (oh, the downvotes, yes, I am very interested in you denying me my much-needed affirmation on metacritic.... boohoo).

If you're one of the above, then you're also a pro in lying to yourself - and even worse, others - that the controls of this game are Halo-like (in fact, Master Chief can go suck an alien dong, what good did he ever do or even say?). You'd rationalize the talking gun sidekick in High on Life is not getting on your nerves 10 minutes in and the dialogs, though fresh at points and obviously not "shootery" at all are getting tired a few hours in - add to that mediocre graphics and utterly crappy "music" (that R&M fans will tell you HAS to be like that or it would not be funny) - then go ahead and dive right in...

The Rick & Morty-Verse is clearly divided into people that think "Anything done by anyone involved in R&M is pure gold, so everyone who doesn't like it clearly has no PhD in intelligent humoristics and the counterside is populated by haters (insert the opposite and something like "I find it a bit trite and too hard-trying") I sit right in the middle -

the game itself, mechanically speaking is - very sadly - utter crap. Period. Controls feel gooey (for a shooter-type game, that's bad, people...) and the Morty-voice-talking-gun sidekick gets so very annoying as the game progresses - and R&M fans will point out that this is made exactly because of that and you NEED to love it, if you think it's annoying, you're annoying, fartknocker.

The good side of the title definitely are the very funny undertones, outside of the try-hard gun talk bits, too much "alt humor" in my taste.

The "story" if we want to call it that could be that of any R&M type try-hard show or even an episode of the very same... it's generic and the strewn-in humorous undertone is trying to shovel enough funny over the dirtpile that is the engine and the very medicore "shoot anything that's moving if it has a red reticule" gameplay in-between the dialog bits.

The game is definitely not interesting outside of the story - even worse, it plays about as well as Postal 4 does (another try-hard failing to reclaim old glory days).

Swap out the story and Justin Roiland's grating Morty-style voicework and you'd have a pure non-sale.

It's good enough if you can overlook the really bad controls, lazy level design and being swarmed with hundreds of generic aliens and other blobs of graphic that try to paint over the fact they're badly designed by spouting "funny" things at you - and to add to that of course your talking gun comments on your shooting ... which is funny and fresh for the first 2 hours and then you wish there was a big effing sticker to put on that gun's Morty-mouth.

Played the game the day it was released, and the game felt really bad, trying to run 60 fps but the game struggled a lot, some minor bugs, but the game updated really fast, and fixed some bugs and thankfully the 60 fps problem.

Now talking about gameplay, dont expect a really unique gameplay, you got 5 different guns that you collect during the game, and these guns can talk, first gun you get is named Kenny, and Kenny got voiced by Justin Roiland, basically Morty´s voice, almost the same kind of acting as in Morty´s. Serves as a regular pistol, but got a glob shot alternate fire is a large explosive shot, it jumps enemies to the air doing some damage.

Then we got Knifey, its just a talking knife, kinda funny dialogs he got, but nothing more to add.

We also got Gus, kind of a frog shotgun, with a shooting metal saw.

We got Sweezy too, its like a handgun machine gun, idk what type of "animal" or thing it is, but its a girl, not a big dialog also as Gus.

We got Creature that shoots little characters that attaches to the body of the enemy and start making damage, also got a mind controlling shot, really helpfull for crowd control, kind of a pacifist.

And at last but not least we got Lezduit, it only got one kind of "shot" that is kind of a electrifying shot, this weapon is used only for the last mission.

Truthout the game, you can notices that you only go after bosses, and the storyline is kind of short, i completed the game in 12 hours 33 minutes, but some people finished it on 5 hours.

The bosses are different one from another and got different attacks and different movements, also obviously different story´s, and although the story is not a mind blowing one, it is kind of interesting, all the universe aspect and humor it got into it, kind of work together and make a very good gaming experience, really glad that we get to play this type of game, really liked that it is a First Person Shooter game but different in his own way.

It isn’t *bad*, it’s just not great. If you have gamepass I’d say try it; there’s a 50/50 chance it might be worth the download. Otherwise I’d say skip it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A really videogame ass game. This is a true straight-shooter of a game (no pun intended). If you are looking for a laid back and linear shooter to take a break from the constant barrage of massive RPGs we get, High on Life could be for you.

I never watched Rick and Morty really, but I would imagine the humor is directly aligned with the show. I found the comedy to be relentlessly okay. Meaning, it never stopped, but it was all solid jokes that were never too funny. Only on occasion did the quips become obnoxious. I stress the humor factor of this game because that is what I am assuming you are excepting when you dive into this game.

With an entry point of $60, you would be much better off just getting game pass for a month if you don't already have it, in order to play the game. It is a short experience with very few side objectives to do. The shooting mechanics are average to below average and I found myself using only one of the four main guns much more often than not.

Visually it doesn't knock your socks off, but it certainly has a unique art style. The various alien species you meet aren't incredibly diverse, especially the enemies you fight. Almost every enemy looks the exact same and you fight them in very one dimensional ways. The bosses are the best part of any combat you engage in, as they are all unique from one another. However, fighting the bosses did feel slightly uninspired and traditional. I noticed very little stuttering in the framerate unless there was a lot of enemies or NPC's on screen at once.

More on the technical side of things; I did notice a lot of minor but annoying glitches. Sometimes a character's dialogue wouldn't start when it was supposed to. This lead to long moments of silence where I wasn't sure what to do. A couple times I had to restart the game because the next objective wouldn't commence. It was not anything egregious, but still slightly annoying.

When it comes to whether or not I would recommend High on Life, I would say it depends on what you are looking for. All together, it was a solid experience that I hope they can build on in a potential sequel. They could hopefully flesh out the mechanics with more variations in combat and enemy design. The bosses, which were the main draw of the combat, was a bright spot in the experience. I could definitely see a future in which High on Life 2 comes out and it is simply bigger and better. For now, you have a 10-15 hour linear FPS with some solid jokes and a lot of concepts that are good, but could eventually be finetuned to make a stellar sequel. This is a good starting point for a franchise and we will see if it was a successful enough game for us to get more.

Those well versed in modern cartoon comedies like Rick and Morty or Smiling Friends will perhaps not get as many laughs from High on Life. Luckily, High on Life succeeds in other areas. The game has character and(believe it or not) heart. By the end, one is likely to have been satisfied with the journey.

The combat in High on Life tries to innovate and mostly succeeds. The game is fun, no doubt, especially in the latter half.

High on Life is carried by its humor. I think most people will tell you that. I laughed with the game from start to finish. The characters, plot and scenarios are all charming and the game does not take itself seriously at all. It does not try to be some gritty, action game but instead feels more like a summer comedy (more on that later). One example, in the beginning of the game, you meet this washed-up alien bounty hunter named Gene who is essentially your Ben Kenobi-like mentor. He stays with you throughout the whole game but the jokes that highlight his washed-upness, laziness and vulgarness never get old. I enjoyed his quips and the other character's complaints about him, often literally loling. And Gene is just one funny character, they game does not have any shortage of humor: Dark, potty, this game has all of it.

Now, it is truly best enjoyed as an interactive summer comedy, as stated above. That's because the shooting mechanics and guns leave a lot to be desired. For example, early in the game, you get this funny shotgun named Gus. However, the shotgun lacks the "oomf" that a shotgun typically has in FPS games. It just feels weak. At times when I thought the shotgun would come in handy, I just used the default pistol instead because it worked better. There's other weapons in the game but, unlike the pistol, they feel niche and don't get the job done as efficiently. But matter of fact, the gunplay and shoot mechanics as a while feel weak and floaty. The shooting does not particularly feel great; it often feels floaty. Although, there are numerous upgrades and modifiers you can purchase of your weapons, which is admittedly surprisingly.

That said, this problem can be overridden by tuning the game's difficulty to story mode. This makes the game a cakewalk, with the exception of the final boss, who still almost killed me. Although this does make the game too-easy, it does allow you to focus on your weapons' banter, storyline and humor (again think summer comedy) that carry the game.

That said, I can only recommend this game if you pick it up on GamePass. It lacks a lot of content for $60 game. There is no multiplayer component or endgame content to make me feel like I got my money's worth out of it. However, as a game that released on GamePass day one, I think anyone down for a good laugh should play it.

As I said many times in this interview, let it be a funny movie and you'll really enjoy it.

High on Life is an enjoyable yet silly first person shooter that works on most levels. While the humour sometimes misses he target, for the most part it is quite a witty and humouress story with interesting protagonists and antagonists to be found along the way as you explore this immersive alien shooter. Definitely a game for those looking for something unique yet different in the first person shooter genre.

It can be hard to separate what is ironically bad and what is just, well, bad. [Issue#381, p.100]

Humor is sometimes tough to get right. You have to pace it right and you shouldn’t overdo it. Justin Roiland and co. unfortunately throw it at you in mindless spades and hope something sticks. And underneath it all? Just a very average shooter.
