It doesn't just describe events to you, like some movies do, but it portrays it in such a way that it's genuinely chilling and believable. In comparison to Weeks, Days doesn't hold what it has over you like a bludgeon, it doesn't attempt to beat you with the speed of the zombies, or the gore. But it places it in supreme positions in the film to have the utmost effect, at the climax, at the low-point, etc. And the best part about it, is that it manages to achieve a constant level of edginess, a constant thrill even when there's nothing on the screen, it manages all of this without a guitar-blasting soundtrack (however awesome the Weeks theme is) or cameras explicitly showing that zombies are just running at you, spewing blood as they go. In fact, you are often scared in this movie simply by the fact that you don't really see what's scaring you, which is a true sign of mastery in the genre. On the other end of the spectrum, all performances in this film are excellent, the chemistry between Seline and Jim is believable especially. All characters have an edge of sympathy, and portray to you that not everyone to survive the apocalypse will be beefy, bulky men with chain guns. It defies a lot of things that would be expected of it, and ditches all normal conventions, pulling it off with grace and poise. It's a must see for anyone who can stand the level of intensity. It's a must see for anyone who can stand the. Expand

In this version a virus escapes because of a raid by PETA type activists on a research facility in the UK. Apparently the virus causes those who are infected to fly into a rage and dismember the first person they see. Sound familiar? Somehow, they attack only uninfected humans, not each other. But humankind may be safe after all since not one infected person strays beyond the UK so the world is safe from Perfidious Albion's latest blunder. Nothing really connects. I decided to redo my review as many people argued that the stupid decisions, which was my biggest annoyance with the movie, can be explained and thus are no arguments at all.
I do not agree with this and will try to show why this movie isn't any good and why the stupid decisions are at the heart of the problem.

Because metacritic allows only for a limited amount of text I have to be brief and cut to the chase. But first let me say that it is no good arguing that a movie has be done before. Even if that is the case, this has nothing to do with the movie itself. Many things have been done before. As someone said, if redoing a movie makes it bad, then the universally acclaimed movie the Maltese Falcon by John Huston would fall in that category.

A movie is a story and a story requires at least these two things: good characters and a good plot. Good characters point to believable people and believable people we can connect with, even if we don't like them. A good plot points to believable events, even if the these events are illogical in themselves.
Note that with believable I do not mean: because it can really happen in life, but I mean: that it is accepted as being consistent with the internal logic of the story. For instance: if a story accepts that magic exists and can be used, then it stands to reason that someone can be a magic user, even though magic has not been proven to exist in real life.
This point makes short work of arguments as: why do the infected not attack each other? They do not because the world works that way and we do not require an explanation.

Good characters have traits that define them. Examples can especially be found in cartoon characters. Take as example Mickey Mouse(naive and brave), Donald Duck(temperamental, committed) and Goofy(lovable, clumsy, silly, easygoing). These cartoon characters do not only posses these traits, but to a large degree these traits are part of the way they look and even move(goofy being tall, thin and moving in a clumsy manner).

Let's turn to the central character of the movie. What traits does he display? The only trait he consistently shows throughout the movie is that he is dumb-witted to the point of being a danger to the others around him. He does not have something like the determined kick ass chick attitude of the girl he meets in the story(Selena) nor does he have the dedication and boisterous nature of the father. This then is the central character in the world with whom we have to connect and his only discerning quality is that he is too dumb be alive(for long).

The logic of a story is grounded in the real world for we have nothing else to go on. So in general we assume that everything of the real world applies unless it is explicitly changed for the story. So we can assume that people do things like eating, drinking and having a dump without seeing them do these mundane activities in the movie. No movie requires to show you this, but we assume it happens and when it is needed for the plot it will be shown.

Let's have a look at the plot. 28 days later abounds with stupidity. The father exposes everyone to unnecessary danger by driving his taxi through a tunnel with wrecks. They have lunch out in the open exposed. They make noise despite knowing that it attracts infected. The father exposes himself to blood, despite knowing better. Instead of holing up for the night in a room that is defensible, they use the ground floor one with windows that can be jumped through by infected. This is just a random set of the stupidity in the movie.

Now stupidity in the world of 28 days later should lead to death and hence most of the people involved by rights die or should die. But this can not be the group of people that survive in this dangerous world. It requires qualities that allow you to survive. The characters and the plot are therefore hugely inconsistent with the world of 28 days later..

The only survivors in the movie stay alive despite a tendency to make stupid decisions, while apparently the rest of the inhabitants of the UK, the more sensible ones presumable, were killed by the infection or something else(wise decisions?). Or perhaps they did not die at all but fled in time? This requires explanation, but we get none. Therefore this movie is bad because it doesn't explain how people survive so long while making a string of stupid mistakes.

This is a central weakness in the movie which makes it a bad movie, despite being thought provoking(where?), despite having nice visuals(?), despite having good music, despite anything else. A movie ought to be a believable story with believable characters. They both are badly drawn in this movie, hence the movie is bad.
No two ways about it

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 28 Days Later is something of a modern cult classic but even so, it’s hard to believe that it only came out fourteen-fifteen years ago. But then again, it’s also hard to believe that it DID come out fourteen-fifteen years ago. 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later and talk regarding a potential third and fourth series film notwithstanding, the film operates as most cult classics do so well- telling a story that is in many ways a circular journey and neatly wraps many details up while maintaining the intrigue and mystery by leaving some relatively unanswered as well. Although fans/victims of the lore and universe will know that many details and background interests have been added in the years since- comic books, graphic novels, a film sequel and more, the best part about any zombie apocalypse (besides it being horrid to be stuck in) is that anything can happen.

The sixties, seventies, eighties, and even nineties all had their famous horror zombie flicks and we’d seen many tall tales come and go- Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead to name a few. We’ve even seen some surprisingly good films since- I Am Legend, The Crazies, Shaun of the Dead, and Dawn of the Dead (2004). 28 Days Later kicked all of this off however, and not just in the film industry. Prior to the reinvention of the classic zombie thriller-horror romp many considered the genre to be dead and buried like westerns and eighties action flicks. Afterwards however we’ve been treated to a resurgence in films, literature, and even gaming. Left 4 Dead and Dead Rising are two of the bigger franchises out there and they both prominently feature the zombie apocalypse in entirely different ways.

Not only is 28 Days Later a good film and a good example of what to do in terms of filming the zombie uprising, but it deserves its status as a cult classic because it is both a harrowing experience against WWZ-like zombies and it is a cinematic experience that should be appreciated to the fullest. The camera work in Danny Boyle’s zombie thriller is spectacular- both in the long pans across the desolate London horizon and the tense emotions elicited throughout every chase sequence and encounter. Although it reestablishes the now commonplace trope that humans are their own worst enemy even in the dead uprising, 28 Days Later focuses both on the visceral feelings and emotions of mankind in reaction to the dead and undead as well.

Although we’ve been treated to two feature-length films that tell pretty decent stories within their own version of the zombie apocalypse, I’m really excited for what the future might hold for a series such as 28 ___ Later especially in the wake of the immense success of shows such as The Walking Dead (and the Kirkman comics). I would love nothing more than to see yet another quality zombie game released set in a similarly dark and gritty world to the films and perhaps even set within the same universe and utilizing some of the abundant lore as well. So far we’ve been given Zombi (originally for Wii U) which is probably the closest we’ve yet come to a fully realized and detailed experience in the vein of 28 Days Later, and that game was decent for what it offered in interesting gimmicks and mechanics.

I’m doing my best not to really spoil the great narrative even though it’s probably considered a bit cliche nowadays- not at the time, considering it is what so many movies now base themselves off of it seems. Not only is it a fully worthwhile and fundamental stroke of genius in terms of storytelling and cinematography, the acting itself is pretty spot on and the relatively unknown actors (besides Brendan Gleeson and Chris Eccleston) sell their roles perfectly. The 2004 version of Dawn of the Dead may be one of the most recognizable and pretty decent zombie films of the early 2000s, but let’s not forget the fact that 28 Days Later started things off right and paved the way not only for the shambling dead but the night-roaming mutants of I Am Legend as well. All things said and done, Boyle’s film would’ve also been fine without a sequel but expanding the 28 universe hasn’t been the worst idea either.

But the rest of us know one when we see one and this film is a big one. Sexy and nude Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins) stars as Jim a young man whom awakes out of a coma after a pandemic and discovers that most of the survivors left are infected with a rage virus which drives them crazy and drives them to attack and infect others. The plot is quite similar to so many. Mostly like every zombie movie ever made. Along the way he meets some survivors which include a truly bad ass Naomie Harris (Pirates of the Carribean 2&3) and they try and find help. A radio broadcast leads them to a group of soldiers with questionable intentions. There's nothing really new here plot wise but the execution is creatively stunning. The grainy, sort if found footage style easily immerses you into the events on screen and it's both terrifying and addictive. The movie is also emotionally effective because the characters and their plight are well developed. Despite the director's intentions the horror community has claimed the film as one of our own and it's undoubtedly worth celebrating.

As a horror film this one is a one of a kind. Its real ability to scare its audience has little to do with typical horror movie conventions, although it does manage a moment here and there, such as the church scene (especially the moment when ..... [reference deleted]). However, this film's perspective on human nature is where it achieves the most scares. From the well meaning animal rights group in the beginning of the film to Jim's rampage at its end (which has entered into my all time favorite movie scenes), no one in this film is free of sin, an inherently violent nature or accountability for their actions. The Rage disease is just a medium for human nature to act out it's most primal inclinations, which seems to be aimed at harming other human beings. The third section of the film which takes place at a manor house under the "protection" of a small military group only confirms these tendancies. The soldiers actions towards our heroes (especially the women) drives home the idea that humans don't need to necessarily be infected with Rage to canabalize upon each other. Expand

They sprint and the chances of survival are much less. There's also an eerie feeling a claustrophobia at the beginning of the movie, even though the main character is out in the open with London to himself. It also creates characters that you begin to love, and hate. Among them are, the fight for one's individual survival at all costs, and the need for a perspective on the future of humankind, even if that would lead to detaining and raping the last few women. Interstingly, one of the characters in the movie claims that people have killed each other since the birth of humankind, and that therafter nothing has changed since the arrival of zombies. This claim is open for interpretation and might imply that our kind's rage against one another will eventually lead to our own apocalypse. Another character suggests that due to the short time men have inhabitated Earth, the world will go back to normalcy after the extinction of the humans. Nevertheless, the movie is by far not nihilistic, but also claims that love for one another is our most important need, and therefore gives life a purpose even in the most dire situations. A great, and at times intense, low budget movie. Expand

It's tense, scary and thoroughly British. You follow a group of well-developed characters that you actually care about (a rarity for a horror film) and you genuinely feel for their plight. The real strength of 28 Days is its use of contrast in tone - Boyle gives you a good scare, then gradually lulls you into a false sense of security again with an extended period of calm, making the next scare all the more shocking. The middle act of the film essentially resembles a jolly family road trip, making the jet-black finale all the more disturbing. Boyle has plenty of opportunity to show off as a director, and with some arty cinematography and rapid-fire editing, he continues to prove himself to be a true artisan. The crowning jewel of 28 Days Later is definitely the finale, which is a dazzling stylish sequence that evolves into something you'd never see in a mainstream Hollywood horror film. With some great performances, loads of scares and bucket-loads of style, 28 Days Later is a truly spectacular alternative British horror film. Expand

I sound like a broken record at the moment because yet again 28 Days later is a film of two halves. the first is slow but does build the characters in a way that makes the latter half pack an emotional punch as well as a visceral one.

The 2nd half of 28 Days is just so good you can excuse the slow nature of the first 45 minutes even if it does serve a purpose towards the end. However the best thing about 28 Days Later is its a film making a point but it never feels heavy handed or as if its being force fed to you. The idea that the real monsters are the humans is a point made by Danny Boyle so adeptly that the film leaves you thinking at the end about society now and what would happen in a national emergency (at least, I did). The direction is also incredibly ambitious despite the limited budget (which unfortunately is incredibly noticeable) with shots including empty streets surrounding Westminster and the houses of parliament being extremely prolific and inspired. The cast of Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Brendan Gleeson and Megan Burns work well together and all give great performances, especially Gleeson as someone holding onto hope for the sake of his daughter. The final 20 minutes of the film is a fine example of how all films should end with the film culminating in an incredibly tense action set piece that provides genuine chills and scares while also shocking you to your core. Its a thrilling film which may take some getting into but by the end it is well worth it.

It is also another post apocalyptic film that plays into people's fear of the end of the world. Most of these movies suck, but Boyle knew this and made sure his movie didn't. 28 Days Later follows the life of a survivor (Cillian Murphy) who wakes up in an empty hospital after an accident. He has no idea what's going on, but soon learns the horrible truth. Boyle decide to film the movie as if he were following this stranger from a distance, with an outdated camcorder. It gives the movie a grainy, dark, 70's style and fits right into the story. Cillian Murphy is great in his first leading role and you can see why he's now a name in Hollywood. Overall, it's pretty bloody and predictable, but defiantly not your typical end of the world film. The acting is top notch and the way it was filmed and directed make it something special. Expand

It was gripping, smart, and yeah...somehow realistic if situated in the right context. Virus, epidemies, all that can happen, we just never think that would happen to us, these days in our world. It is a movie where values are tested, so are relationships. There is gore, but I don't think it is unnecessary. I didn't like the fact that Mark gets killed so early in the movie...I would have loved to know more about his character, which seemed pretty nice. There was room for improvement and there could have been a better argument about the use that 'women' had for the army guys. Just lust? what about a different approach..survival and preservation of the specie? I mean, at this point the movie turned a bit basic. I expected a more elaborated argument here for it could have become even more profound what was somehow wasted. this part of the movie is indeed, stereotypical but overall it was a film I enjoyed a lot. One thing I found really silly is not the movie, but comments/question I have read in other sites about why 'Frank left his credit card if that could have been of use, later?', c'mon, wasn't it a clearly sarcastic gesture related to the fact that money -given the circumstances- can be of not value at all? What kind of movie people that make those stupid remarks were watching? Keeping money, or a credit card to 'bribe someone' when the whole country is wiped out and the characters are permanently saying how money is totally useless? Quite honestly, questions or arguments like that used to criticize this movie make me feel sorry for some people's IQ...! Expand

In 2002, DannyThe Rage virus has wiped out nearly all of England, turning its infected into murderous killers driven only by their need to feed. Now, a handful of unlucky survivors are left to find an escape from the nationwide pandemic. In 2002, Danny Boyle shook the Horror genre with a refreshing new thriller that redefined the zombie movie and terrified audiences around the world. 28 DAYS LATER offers a nihilistic world view in which humanity is the ultimate villain. Man's attempt to dissect and control nature is what caused the deadly virus, and while the infected mindlessly attack out of the primal need to feed, it is the living characters that kill out of fear, paranoia, and selfish desire. As best portrayed by the corrupted band of soldiers in the end of the film, it is darkest human emotions that drive home the suspense in 28 DAYS LATER, with the added horror of infected flesh-eaters running in the streets. The infected are unlike any of the undead that we have ever seen before. They are fast and ferocious, bursting through windows and tearing into their victims with a shocking speed. This would become a popular trend in the zombie films to follow, the most notable example being Zack Synder's frightening update to the Horror classic DAWN OF THE DEAD. Boyle's decision to shoot 28 DAYS LATER on a digital camera delivers a grim sense of reality, which is darkened even further by the dreary score. He also creates one of the defining moments in recent Horror as Jim walks aimlessly through the deserted streets of London. 28 DAYS LATER has a devastating effect on the viewer, and has proven to be one of the best films from the 2000's.

Honestly, it reminds me a lot of Trainspotting in the sheer terror it can create and the general atmosphere of hopelessness. Some call this an astute political allegory, but if the only element of that is that scientific experimentation will eventually bite us in the ass and lead to the demise of us all, then it is hardly profound. Despite that, it is an undeniably smartly crafted sci-fi horror film. The first to infect people instantly (within seconds). It also has one of the best movie scores, one that rivals those from John Carpenter classics "Halloween" and "The Thing." It is striking how the music can elevate a movie or a scene. It show's that our government wouldn't give a flying f*ck if something like this were to happen. This movie though, was so sad at points, yet so happy. And the happy end made it all worth it. It is a MASTERPIECE worth checking out. Definitely rent/watch/buy it if you get the chance! It was very sad when they killed Mark (the british guy with Selena) and when they killed Frank (Hannah's dad) Frank could've avoided being killed by not kicking the post with the dead body on top.. No less an authority than the Bible devotes entire books to the last days. And, since almost the beginning of science fiction, the apocalypse has been a popular subject. In fact, one of the most common science fiction subgenres (which gained popularity during the early Cold War era of the 1950s) is that of the post-apocalyptic survivor - an individual who lives through some kind of catastrophe (often a nuclear war) and must make his way through the hostile environment that exists in its wake.

Danny Boyle, the director of Shallow Grave and Trainspotting, has brought his off-center perspective to this story. Armed with a screenplay written by Alex Garland, Boyle's vision of humanity's twilight has mankind wiped out not by fire, brimstone, and nuclear fallout, but by disease. The living are divided into two categories: the infected, who are more like mindless zombies than human beings, and the survivalists, who eschew making plans, realizing that "staying alive is as good as it gets." The allegorical nature of the movie is impossible to miss. And Boyle touches upon such potentially weighty matters as the fundamental difference between man and beast, and whether human beings are natural killers.

The first half of 28 Days Later is a road movie, as Jim and his companions make their way from London to Manchester using deserted highways and facing nearly constant attacks from roving bands of the infected. The second half is a more straightforward action/adventure. The film contains one significant twist, and Boyle adeptly blends elements of horror and drama with the science fiction. In fact, one of the things that sets this movie apart from many similar cinematic endeavors is its focus on characters rather than action. The movie develops Jim, Selena, Frank, and Hannah into believable individuals. The situation is crafted in a way that seems almost plausible, and, once it establishes the rules, never cheats. The film's "villains" have credible reasons for acting as they do, and the ending doesn't feel cheap or false.

When Boyle wants to shock us, he has no trouble doing so. There's a little of George A. Romero (Night of the Living Dead) here. Several scenes in which the infected attack are genuinely creepy. One sequence in particular - in which Jim and Frank race to change a tire while a band of infected relentlessly approach - generates as much tension as any other 2003 motion picture. This is followed in short order by an effective character building sequence in which the protagonists enjoy a picnic while ruminating about what, if anything, the future might hold. Suddenly, Jim and Selena have become aware that the mantra of "just survive" is not enough.

I enjoyed 28 Days Later, although I would be the first to admit that it doesn't do much that's radical. It's better than most post-apocalypse stories because it cares as much about the characters and their circumstances as with developing battles and action sequences. Three of the primary actors - Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, and Megan Burns - are mostly unknown on this side of the Atlantic. The two recognizable faces - Brendan Gleeson and Christopher Eccleston - are character actors, not stars. Yet, perhaps because of the relative anonymity of the performers, the ensemble works.

28 Days Later is dark, the video quality is dubious (it was shot on digital video to curtail cost and provide a grittier look), and the subject matter is familiar. But the filmmakers counter these questionable qualities with solid performances, an intelligent script, and sure-handed direction. The result is a movie that kept me involved from start to finish.

However, this film utterly surprised me, slipping in to my top 10 all-time favorites by transcending the expectations of the genre. I'm generally averse to throwing superlatives around when discussing film, but this one earned them.

It's less a traditional horror film than a horror-draped survivor's tale, and it's more human and more haunting than most films I've seen in any genre. It's impeccably filmed and edited. With both slow-burning, stark frames and frantic close-ups, it's use of camera to tell the story is masterful, never intrusive. Same with the marriage of image and soundtrack here. It's among the best I've ever experienced. The dialogue is naturalistic, without action flick, comic book stingers (Hey! But I love comics!) and conveys the stress, the fear, the desperation, the hopelessness of real people in an unreal situation. The acting, too, is superb! Cillian Murphy, as Jim, put in a performance that ranks among the very best I've ever seen on film. I've since seen him in numerous roles. He's fantastically talented, but 28 Days is still my favorite. One element that sets it apart from most horror is the pacing. This one takes time to establish an aura, an ambiance. It takes time to breathe. Rather than merely dampening intensity, it often builds it, making the characters and their interactions richer, and ultimately instilling a horror that's much more real and horrific.

The more vaunted sequel, 28 Weeks Later, is the energetic younger brother, a straight-ahead-horror-flick with uptempo pacing and loads of action. It's quite well done and succeeds on its own merits, but to this viewer, it's clearly the inferior film. 28 Weeks was a mainstream thrill ride that delivered, but it's ultimately forgettable, like most of the mainstream films I see. The original, on the other hand, is a haunting experience that's stayed with me for nearly a decade since I first saw it.

28 Days Later offers a rare, deeply felt and intense experience that makes it stand out as a great film. Consider further that it's rooted in the horror genre, and you'll realize how truly exceptional it is.

This movie grips the viewer from the start with a scene showing how the Rage virus (virus responsible for the zombies) gets loose, and then proceeds to show us Jim, the protagonist, as he wakes in a hospital after the apparent fall of civilization and his struggles to survive in this harsh setting. It attempts to answer the questions of how might a variety of people survive? Just how ugly could survivor camps get in just 28 days after the fall? And what hope, if any, might there be in this situation?

The story lets the viewer develop attachments to characters and delivers some heart-ache along the way, which adds to the story and tension. (more if you watch the directors cut) It does suffer from logical inconsistencies at times, even given the rules previously set out by the story, sometimes breaking suspension of disbelief. These missteps are largely forgivable due to good acting, good special effects, a fun and largely plausible story -- given the implausible (zombie) premise -- topped off with great directing and good camera work.

This movie is definitely worth watching if you like horror films that are more than just splatter-punk/torture films. If you don't, give this movie a pass you likely won't enjoy it. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie despite some of the rough patches. It's a solid 7 of 10.

----------------------------
Notes on the subgenre
----------------------------
Why is it a zombie film?
1. It's a "zombie film" for this reason alone: It's a movie in which people become mindless, relatively immune to damage, pain...etc. and arguably cannibalistic and violent toward regular humans after getting exposed intimately to the already afflicted (bite, blood, other bodily fluids). The mechanism of becoming a zombie (fungi, virus, voodoo, radiation, god/magic/chemicals/unknown forces raising bodies from the dead) is secondary.

2. As a result: this movie checks the main boxes for the present day popular concept of the term "zombie." That's all it needs for inclusion into the subgenre of "zombie fiction."

3. And while one could make the argument that these aren't zombies in the so-called proper "raised from the dead" sense, one would miss the fact that the origin of the term is from voodoo, and those zombies don't die before becoming mindless, and are largely passive and obedient slaves to the Bocor who made them.

4. For a historical frame of reference Voodoo legends, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Herbert West: Reanimator by H.P. Lovecraft (short story), The Book of Revelations from The Bible ...etc. all give very different accounts of what these creatures we now, largely, classify as zombies are like. Some of it is very unlike and more far more nuanced than current popular zombie fiction. This means people can usually find and cherry pick historical items that support their own belief that some certain work isn't in fact about zombies.

5. Such is the way of definitional pedantry. Anyone with sufficient knowledge on the history of a subject, and a very strong opinion can do it, instead of actually paying attention to all of the facts on how a term has changed through time, and what it means today.

Four survivors of an epidemic flee an England overrun by howling, scampering zombies. The story poses essential questions of what "survival" actually means (and then answers them: It means not being devoured by **** crazed zombies). Disc extras are mostly serviceable: The commentary track fills its cultural function of being a repository for transient factoids ("Chimps can only act to age seven") and filmmaking-on-the-fly tips ("Paper drifting through a shot is always a good, cheap way of suggesting an apocalypse"). The supposedly tougher endings boil down to whether the hero lives, and a crap featurette consists of qualified medical doctors being encouraged to agree, "Yes, this could legitimately happen." So switch it all off and just watch what happens to be the best post-9/11 movie yet. Expand

When ''28 Days Later'' is not scaring you silly, it invites you to reflect seriously on the fragility of modern civilization, which has been swept away by a gruesome and highly contagious virus while the hero lies peacefully in a coma. FourWhen ''28 Days Later'' is not scaring you silly, it invites you to reflect seriously on the fragility of modern civilization, which has been swept away by a gruesome and highly contagious virus while the hero lies peacefully in a coma. Four weeks after a laboratory full of rage-infected monkeys has been liberated by some tragically misguided animal rights militants, the whole of London -- and possibly every place else -- has been substantially depopulated. The churches and alleyways are littered with corpses, and fast-moving, red-eyed ''infecteds'' roam the streets looking for prey. Even the rats flee from them, and the few healthy humans face a Hobbesian battle for survival.

But what is most striking, and most chilling, about the early scenes of this post-apocalyptic horror show, directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, is the eerie, echoing emptiness. Stumbling out of his hospital bed, Jim (Cillian Murphy), a former bike messenger, encounters a familiar metropolis that has been almost entirely stripped of life. Postcard images of the Thames, London Bridge and the dome of St. Paul's Cathedral take on a lurid, funereal glow. After centuries of bustle and enterprise, what remain are vacant buildings, overturned double-decker buses, looted vending machines and cheap souvenir replicas of Big Ben scattered across the sidewalk.

In their previous collaboration, ''The Beach,'' Mr. Boyle and Mr. Garland tried to imagine how a small group of people, removed from the modern world, might reconstitute society from scratch, an experiment whose failure seemed preordained for both the characters and the filmmakers. Here, working with a more solid premise, a smaller budget and greater freedom (and without big movie stars), they probe a similar theme more persuasively.

Jim, it turns out, is not entirely alone. Before long, he and some other survivors -- a prickly loner named Selena (Naomie Harris); an affable dad, Frank (Brendan Gleeson); and Frank's adolescent daughter, Hannah (Megan Burns) -- have formed a tiny band of nomads, traveling the English countryside in a big, black taxi and discovering that caring for one another is not just a residue of extinct social norms, but also an expression of the survival instinct.

Other expressions, as you might expect, are not so inspiring. Through the silence comes a radio signal, a voice promising that salvation and the answer to the virus lie with a group of soldiers just north of Manchester. They are led by Maj. Henry West (Christopher Eccleston), who seems to have graduated from a ''Lord of the Flies'' military academy. He and his men are on hand to demonstrate that those who offer protection and security can be even more dangerous than the virus-crazed zombies they keep at bay.

The soldiers also allow Mr. Garland and Mr. Boyle an exit from nightmarish claustrophobia into a more conventional (though still quite effective) action-and-suspense story. As such, and as a parable of human nature under extreme duress, ''28 Days Later'' is never less than interesting and acknowledges fairly directly its debt to the visionary ghoulishness of George Romero, who made ''Night of the Living Dead,'' ''Dawn of the Dead'' and ''Day of the Dead.'' The suggestive juxtaposition of zombification and consumerism in ''Dawn,'' which took place mostly in an abandoned shopping mall, is evoked in several scenes here, as are the queasy racial politics of ''Night.''

But the most haunting moments in ''28 Days Later,'' which opens today nationwide, have little to do with social allegory, graphic horror or cinematic shock tactics. The movie, shot in digital video by Anthony Dod Mantle (who has worked with Dogma 95 disciples like Harmony Korine, Thomas Vinterberg and Lars von Trier), sometimes has an ethereal, almost painterly beauty. The London skyline takes on the faded, melancholy quality of a Turner watercolor; a field of flowers looks as if it were daubed and scraped directly onto the screen. Thanks to Mr. Mantle's images and Mr. Boyle's unexpected restraint, the middle section of the picture, though punctuated by mayhem and grimness, has a pastoral mood, and the actors, unwinding from the stress and panic of London, are allowed to be warm, loose and funny.

Mr. Boyle, whose other films include ''Shallow Grave'' and ''Trainspotting,'' has never been accused of lacking narrative flair or visual style. Rather, he has sometimes been suspected of having too much of both, and of lacking gravity or soul. Those movies, though exciting, could leave a sour aftertaste of cynicism in your mouth. The content of this one is far more extreme; you can almost smell the rotting flesh. But what lingers is a curious sweetness. Mr. Boyle has hardly lost his sly, provocative perversity or his ear for the rhythms of unchecked violence, but he does seem to be maturing. It's as if, in contemplating the annihilation of the human race, he has discovered his inner humanist.

This Day. This Moment. Now.

28 Days Later

Boyle's thrilling ride is a family drama that seeks stillness and devours it all the way. The infected virus and a lone family surviving the extinction, a concept that has been visited a many times, and a concept that more than often delivers. Fortunately, being on the larger margin, the film's eerie camera work and the uncertainty of the antagonist that even scares the viewers as much as a walk in the dark does. Visiting new locations and meeting new characters, the film never feels like shattered into various chapters, the transactions of one antic as such to another is left on Boyle's brilliant execution that fabricates Garland's explicit script into a documentary like footage.

Among these various so called chapters, one of the best is the sort of semi-government camp of troops that helps our lead characters survive. This is where Garland's vision widens and generalizes to a taunt that cuts deepest into our bones, as a society. His message is so vivid and jaggedly on mark, where he peels the human nature to its worst honest figure that the harrowing images is the least concern of ours on terms of horror.

To weave out a satire as such at a point of crises shows the brilliance of the makers and the zest of sculpting art as delicate and as honest as possible. Murphy as our host to this infected world remains the last one to be on lead and feels less of a protagonist than any other, this ingenious method of Garland keeps the tale grounded in this fiction. Harris as a strongsmart jaw clenching woman and Gleeson as an overprotective supporter helps stabilize the tone aptly. 28 Days Later predicts less of the future world and mirrors more of our current issues of loss and gain.

More interesting than I thought.

When I decided to watch this film, I thought it would be just another zombie B movie. However, I think I was wrong. The plot is much better and more interesting.

It all starts when a group of animal activists break into a laboratory to free chimpanzees that are used as guinea pigs. It turns out that at least some were infected with a new virus, which spreads through body fluids and was being studied. Sometime after that, Jim wakes up from a 28-day coma caused by a car accident. To his surprise, he did not see a single person and only when reading some abandoned newspapers did he realize that, while he was hospitalized, the entire population was either evacuated or died. There follows a search for someone still alive, and the struggle to survive.

This film is set against the backdrop of a Zombie pandemic, but the focus is not on those infected or the panic surrounding the disease and its fight. When the movie starts it has already happened, the city is deserted and it looks like the entire human race has been killed. It is quite intense to see this on the screen and a very positive point. I made an effort not to get caught up in details, if we start to think hard the plot reveals flaws in logic. Things get worse in the final half, with the soldiers behaving like mercenaries, in addition to maintaining an "fort" in an unusual way, without any kind of replenishment of ammunition or food ... it's like I say: if we think of ourselves plot details, it falls apart.

The best part of the film is to focus on the characters and allow us to create an emotional bond with them as we get to know them better. This is not very common in these films. Cillian Murphy did a good job, very psychological. We can see the internal conflicts that his character lives, particularly when he is faced with death (that of people who are dear to him, that of people who have to kill to stay alive). He was the most anonymous of the actors in the film, but the effort paid off: it opened doors for more ambitious works like "Girl with a Pearl Earring" and "Cold Mountain". Naomi Harris is excellent too, has the presence and inner strength that her character needed. Like Noah Huntley, whom she shades almost completely, she already had a steady TV career. Brendan Gleeson is also a veteran and plays an excellent role here. The worst was the soldiers. It is from there that the film begins to gradually lose itself until reaching a rather weak ending, in the style of Rambo, or something like that. Even so, it is a film that is superior to a lot of American trash that circulates around.

Technically, it is a very interesting film. The direction, ensured by Danny Boyle, bets strongly on discrete special effects that accentuate the dramatic tension and suspense without overlapping the work of the actors or the story. I think Boyle realized that this is, in fact, the role of special and sound effects, very much in contrast to what we see in American films, where the use and abuse of effects and CGI sometimes make you forget what goes on in the film.

Overall, it is a good film, albeit with flaws.

After having finally seen it, I can say that I was not disappointed. From the time that Cillian wakes up, until the time that he reaches the gas station, I was completely engaged. The long wide shots and tracking shots that showed how lonely and empty the world was really helped build up tension and atmosphere. The movie ended on a nice cliff-hanger, keeping you guessing and wondering, but with a hopeful tone. I also thought it was potentially confusing that the scene wherein Cillian actually wakes up was shot the exact same way as his dream sequence. Because of this, I wasn't sure whether it was all a dream, or if that was an unintentional side effect of using digital film. I really enjoyed the movie's thematic elements, posing the rhetorical question of "What makes a human?". Christopher Eccleston's character did a good job portraying a character that justified his, otherwise unacceptable actions, with the epidemic that took so many lives. There were several other characters and remarks that added to this theme. One such occurrence is when the soldiers were making a game out of taking 'human' lives. The first part of the opening worked really well as a "narration" of sorts, truly hitting home the "show don't tell" concept. Unfortunately, the entire opening was not this way, for when the scientist guy showed up and tried to explain the monkeys, he explains that "They are infected with rage", which I felt was a stupid explanation, this took me out of the experience. The youngest girl has some absolutely terrible line delivery and acting, but the bad line delivery was not limited to her. Overall the child actor was pretty garbage, but there were a few scenes in which she performed above average. Overall, I would recommend this to fans of zombie films and/or 'The Walking Dead', due to its bleak and somewhat slow pace, depicting an apocalyptic world. Expand

The movie has a decent storytelling, splendid film score, soundtrack and lovely characters. The film does not focus all of its strength in providing horror and dread but also manages to provide heart, drama, and transcends it's quality expectations for some moviegoers.

It has also nicely themes and messages about social and political issues that deserves some credit from it's viewers.

Also, the movie reinvents the zombie genre to an all new level because of it's fast-paced and widely energetic antagonists which in turn makes the film fast-paced as well.
