The design of the Genie is horrible, but his performance saves the movie.
In summary, it is a complete copy from beginning to end of the original animation.
Even the songs are the same.
totally forgettable

Erm ye were to start the main actor seemed a little wooden in the roll of Aladdin, will smith did an ok job as the genie, but no one can fill the shoes of the original voice actor of the cartoon sorry.
overall fun for the kids but average at best.

The pacing is so quick at times that key lines such as 'Do you trust me', get lost in the mix. The new song 'Speechless', though a great message, gets lost as it is inferior in its modernity. You also don't realize how strong the relationship with animals is in the animated feature until they are pushed over as second tier characters. Overall a valiant effort but just doesn't really make for a memorable film. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I enjoyed this movie quite a bit. Yes, it cannot compare to the original animated movie with Robin Williams but Will Smith brought a whole new dimension to the Genie which I really liked. The story was a little stupid, with Jasmine actually becoming Sultan (I am all for feminism but this is just going too far) and Jafar was nerfed to make Jasmine look "stronger". If you ignore the token social justice tripe, the movie was enjoyable and brings back a lovely nostalgia of the amazing music brought to us by the 1992 animated marvel that we all fell in love with. Disappointing. A downgrade from the original in nearly every way. The Prince Ali song was good and some of Genie’s dancing is fun to watch but otherwise not happy.

It's enjoyable. The performances aren't all that great (especially the performance of Aladdin, the lead character) but overall, it is an enjoyable retelling of the classic. Oh, and Will Smith is great, he is absolutely the highlight of this movie.

The part I was not looking forward to: Genie was surprisingly the best part of the film. I mean, I was not looking forward to Jafar either but that proved to be spot on gut feeling. The main actor and actress are kind of bland and their acting does give off great chemistry like the original characters had. Will Smith steals the show very often and with what else is on display, you will be glad that he did. The musical numbers are fantastic and incredibly energetic. I personally left the film a little sour due to some questionable changes and character motivations. Another Disney classic hit my the mediocre Live Action bug that Disney has become obsessed with. But, the second half is where this movie takes a full dive into stupidity: it becomes a cliched mess, the pacing becomes extremely inconsistent, the cinematography becomes bland, the dance choreography is generic, and it "overstays it's welcome" pretty hard. However, there were some surprises: Will Smith, Naomi Scott, and Marwan Kenzari who play the Genie, Jasmin, and Jafar respectively, actually bring great performances. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Movie Was pretty good. Most of the actors were fine and despite what i had feared Will Smith is an amazing genie and probably the best actor in the entire movie. it recreates jokes and creates new ones giving you a joy an old Disney was. while most of the new songs were a hit and miss it was a blast listening to recreations of the original songs. My only 2 complaints are 1). actor casted as Jafar. Not saying he's a bad actor but i believe he would would fit as any other character but personally he didn't feel like a Jafar. Jafar in the original is man known for his hypnotic charm as he lures you in, he was a man you wouldn't trust but at the same time you want to hear him out. The actor whole personality as Jafar was trying to be evil and massively lacked that hypnotic charm which makes a Jafar Character not Jafar at all. i'm sure the actor will star in a big role and be famous for that but any character would've been better than casting him has the serpent sorcerer we love. my second complaint is all the cultures they tried to serve on one main dish. This is Arabia not Punjabi, Desi, Persian, Egyptian, ect ect. It felt like they were trying to cater to a bunch of different cultures which ruined the cultural fun and made everything, including the dancing, feel very very stereotypical. i think the movie would've been more fun culturally if it focused on Arabian culture, some of Egyptian culture, And Some of India culture (i say this as Jasmines mother is an Indian Kingdom if you were to Google it) and would be a fun things people would learn about the culture as a whole. The cultural thing i point out however is because i am Islamic and i say this as it would be awesome for people to see true Arabian culture rather than the stereotypical culture most of the world sees in the south Asian, north east Africa it thinks of. Overall i did enjoy Aladdin other than the culture. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good cityscapes and extra design, costume design was excellent, but the dialogue, songs and casting are all terrible. Aladdin lacks the charm of his cartoon counterpart and the sultan is nothing like his adorable, bouncy, happy cartoon counterpart. Even jafar comes off weak rather than diabolically charming. Iago is pointless and abu is actually ugly and offputting compared to cute.

The only decent thing about this movie was the graphics and cinematography.

I wouldn't see it for money. Maybe if i were bored waiting in a doctor's office.

Also, they took liberties with the story. In the cartoon, Jasmine just wants to be free and travel the world. Here she wants to be sultan. Thanks SJW forced narrative.

Will Smith helps but only a little.. His performance is still super cringy.

In every possible way the cartoon is superior.

Some things are best left animated.

It lacks the energy and magic from the 1992 movie, which is strange to me because with Guy Ritchie directing I expected some chaos - just watch 'King Arthur: Legend of the Sword' or any other movie he directed. Also, Jafar sucks in this movie and it isn't Marwan Kenzari, just painfully miscast. The visual effects...yeah, lets not go there.

However, it is entertaining enough to sit through. Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine really makes the role her own, especially during the musical segments. Mena Massoud is fine as Aladdin, but at times I felt like he tried to duplicate the animated version a little bit too much.

Will Smith as the Genie is easily the best part of the movie. Despite not having a solid singing voice, but Smith's charm shines through and most importantly made the character his own. It's funny that the biggest complaint that everyone had turned out to be the best part of the movie, all because of an unfinished effect.

The difference between this and, say, this year's "Dumbo" for example, is the sheer amount of iconography to transcribe from animation to live-action in either film. But that's about it. Like "Dumbo," the new elements introduced here are either horrifically ideated or just flat-out dull. Yes, Will Smith is trying. Yes, the visuals are palatable. There's just simply not much else here. Expand

Weird pacing, a weird new pop song inside a musical that should've been left for the end credits perhaps, an okay Will Genie, strong main characters, especially Naomi Scott who has a ton of potential for starring roles... oh and a weird soulless parrot robot. The musical numbers for the most part are good minus a few poor decisions for where to put them. Will Smith does great as a genie in his own right, and the actors for Aladdin and Jasmine were well chosen. I biggest gripe with the movie is Jafar. In the cartoon movie, Jafar is a vizier who is driven by not only his own selfish desire for power, but also by the infuriating awareness that he is under the command off an incompetent leader. I'm sure this at the very least was something that many could relate to, as Jafar was clearly capable of leading, and extremely effective in his ways, albeit they were evil. But in this new movie, the Sultan is not an incompetent buffoon, and Jafar is not an older magistrate who exudes an aura of danger, knowledge, and evil. The sultan is quite capable, and Jafar is more akin to a young statesman who desperately wishes to rise above his station. In the end this does not feel like Jafar because what he is stated to be, and what he is shown and written as do not match.

The movie is ok, but don't get your hopes up too much.

First Will Smith I am calling him Will Smith because that's what he is. He is as charismatic as usual but he is not playing a character he is playing himself. Aladdin is blend and lacks the personality of his cartoon counterpart, not a lot to say about this one. Jafar is miscast. He is not menacing or sleazy he is just there because someone had to be. Iago is waster. And Jasmine is no longer looking for true love she wants to be in charge. The song numbers are ok for what this movie is. In general the movie is a major let down. Aladdin is not the hero of his own story he is a side character. The movie is about Jasmine and her "rise to power". I say that because her motivations are changed to apparently reflect current year (2019). If they wanted to make a movie about her that's fine but why not go with a new take on it instead of changing the story. It worked for Maleficent why not do a movie called Jasmine and just run with it.
TLTR: If you are nostalgic for Aladdin just revisit the 1992 Disney classic.

Another year, another Disney remake.

They aren’t always bad, but they aren’t always good either. I haven’t seen them all, but I’d say The Jungle Book is probably the gold standard here, recreating and re-imagining the 78-minute animated flick into a thoroughly enjoyable and inventive adventure. Cinderella (yes, that existed) was definitely a by-the-numbers remake, though Lily James’ charming performance elevated it to a must-see. And the rest fall in line. Beauty and the Beast added nothing (though it had some magic) and I haven’t seen the Tim Burton remakes Alice in Wonderland and Dumbo (sorry, kinda).

Now we have Aladdin, directed by Guy Ritchie, surely a strange choice to direct a remake whose original is bursting with color, music, and light-heartedness. Ritchie’s best known movies are the heist movie Snatch, the Robert Downey Jr. led Sherlock Holmes and its inferior sequel, and the famous box-office bomb King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. None of them have any color, and though I am a fan of Downy as Sherlock, none of them are especially good. So how does Aladdin fair?

Not well, unfortunately. It’s more or less the same as the 1992 version without what made it so good. The original was a tight-paced 91-minute movie with Robin Williams at the height of his comedic powers and great visual effects for its time. But here the movie is stretched to a poorly-paced 128 minutes, without Robin Williams, and the visual effects aren’t up to snuff. We’ve come so far with the computer graphic imaging technology that gives reason for these remakes (showcased perfectly in The Jungle Book), but it’s evidently too much to hope for in Aladdin. The CGI of Genie looks weird, the magic carpet ride during “A Whole New World” (that song still slaps) looks like someone did it on photoshop, and the look of Rajah does not compare to Shere Khan.

Will Smith tried really hard to be the OG Genie, while adding a little Fresh Prince flair, but it was too much of an imitation: Robin Williams is untouchable here, and it didn’t work for me. Mena Massoud’s Aladdin was plainly fine, but it’s Naomi Scott’s performance as Jasmine that was a standout. She was the most natural and organic, giving her own performance as opposed to going through the motions of 1992’s version. Her new song was laaaame, though. (Here’s a better showcase of her talents from back her in Disney Channel days). The movie did have good choreography, and at least there is a lot of color, so props to Ritchie for going against type. After that though, the desert well runs dry.

I know I’m being harsh, but Aladdin is my favorite Disney movie, and I’ve seen it eleventy-six times. But some movies perhaps shouldn’t be remade, especially if they work better animated. Disney has obviously tapped into the zeitgeist of nostalgia and is printing money now. But it’s because we love these old movies, not because they are releasing something special now. Indeed, 2019’s Aladdin is void of magic, originality, and a good reason to exist. 2/5

There’s an upcoming Disney live-action movie as well and that would be The Lion King (2019). Most live-action Disney movies can never get better than the animated one and Aladdin’s one of them. First, the acting is kinda weak and bland. We had Mena Massoud as Aladdin. I know he tried really hard to be like Aladdin in the 1992 animated version. There’s also Will Smith as the Genie which was criticized online to be too blue but I didn’t think like that. In my opinion, he was pretty okay and funny as well, even though he couldn’t smash the role like Robin Williams. However, Naomi Scott stole the show as Princess Jasmine. She smashed it for a bit and I was kinda impressed as I said the performances were weak. Though the WORST in here was Jafar played by Marwan Kenzari. His voice was young and friendly, he wasn’t that evil but to be quite idotic and crazy and I had no favour for his roles. Yes, the movie was really entertaining with awesome magical special effects, Will Smith’s humor and more but each of those had problems as well as the musical. They didn’t lack any, but they made the musical more boring, more forgettable and less exciting. The music got lower and the creators got lazier and lazier. They also made the final battle worse. It didn’t take long and it was totally bright. Brightness here and there. Comparing to the animated version, it was totally dark and that’s how the final battle should be. Instead in this live-action, it didn’t take that long and people in Agrabah were like “look at my tricks here, see what I can do!”. They didn’t even pay attention that Jafar’s the ruler, not the Sultan. When Jafar turned into a Genie, he looked like a moron more than a powerful being. His face and hair, it was horrible. They also had new stuffs added to the movie. They were weird and annoying, also new characters as well like Dalia played by Nasim Pedrad. I didn’t see that character in animated Aladdin. She was okay to be added to make the movie funnier but the other new things are unnecessary. It made the movie boring and also took a bit long time and it was 128 minutes comparing to the 92 minutes of the animated Aladdin and it was almost perfect and almost the best Disney animated movie ever made. Personally the movie was kinda disappointing and didn’t live up to the hype. I could barely praise many parts of Aladdin. I bet Disney fans and other types of audiences would like it but Aladdin surely deserved to be mixed from me. It’s just a bland live-action like others. This is definitely not a whole new world! I'll do tons of comparisons to the animated movie because it deserves to be compared, this isn't an adaptation, this movie is really trying to be the same movie as the animated one. It seemed that Disney didn't care in getting talented people to make this movie as good or better than the original, the direction is bland with no style, the cinematography is mediocre, this movie looked like an ad for some Aladdin Disneyland ride. Some CGI looked bad and hilarious, cheesy slow-motion in 2019, new characters and songs added were unnecessary, many of the characters lost their charisma and don't feel the same anymore compared to the animated version, the acting was cartoonish and the genie and Abu looked hilariously awful. Speaking about Abu, there's one reason why Disney's take on Aladdin SHOULD be ANIMATED: The animal characters of the original have no charisma or emotion in this movie because they CAN'T EMOTE! They're realistic animals! However I do liked some stuff. The acting is cartoonish and cheesy, making it bad for me but Will Smith as the Genie was actually good and pretty funny, mainly because his character is meant to be cartoonish, I thought Will Smith would play Will Smith but his performance was actually good #ForgiveMeWill. Some new comedy scenes were really funny and the best of the movie. That's about it for the good stuff.

Disney, please stop remaking your animated movies in live-action, I would've loved to see this movie remade but CGI ANIMATED! It would be cool to see classic Disney movies remade in 3D animation with the technology you now have! Making them live-action just takes away a lot of the "Magic" these movies had, like a vibrant color palette, exagerated movements and expressions, geniunely breathtaking visual effects, etc...

Whilst watchable this Aladdin fails to fly even with the aid of a magic carpet. Will Smith, although not bad, is no substitute for the comic brilliance of Robin Williams as the genie and the songs lack strong orchestration in their arrangements. The new song 'Speechless' also underwhelms. Production Design and Costumes are fine, but their is a lack of an authentic feel to the whole enterprise. The special visual effects are probably the best thing about a production that just feels flat and uninspired. Expand

It’s like an addition, Beauty and the Beast was fine but it was still just a shot for shot remake, Dumbo was not fine and it was somehow worse than a shot for shot remake and now the Disney remake parade continues with yet another classic Aladdin. Remaking a movie into live action almost shot for shot, what is the point? I mean I know its Disney and it’s for kids and all that jazz but honestly is it too much to ask for something a little less PG. What has it added? Nothing, sure it looks pretty, the costumes and the set pieces are fantastic but it’s not better, it’s nowhere near better. Re-release the original animation for the kiddies and remake something a little different for everyone else and not just a bunch of fluff. Aladdin 2019 is painful, specifically the singing, the singing is a cringe inducing auto-tuned, failed attempt to recreate something magical.

I’m just going to go ahead and presume you’ve all seen the original animated version, it’s the same story again only more dragged out. The lovable street rat Aladdin (Mena Massoud) finds a magic lamp containing a Genie (Will Smith) and cue wishes, songs and a magic carpet. Also featuring Jasmine (Naomi Scott) who not only has more lines but her own song too yey! And Jafar (Marwan Kenzari) who I’m sorry is so bland he manages to be upstaged by a CGI carpet. Aladdin should not have been remade, the result is bland and unnecessary. That isn’t just because of Robin Williams although that is a major part of it. Williams as the Genie is a universally loved performance, it’s iconic and it’s hilarious so Will Smith had some big shoes to fill. Is he terrible? No, he’s honestly the best thing about this remake. He put his own stamp on it and does his very best to add comedy as much as he can. It doesn’t always work but he’s trying his best. He certainly looks like he’s having a good time and I can’t really say that about anyone else.

There’s only one way to stop this laziness of Disney remaking their entire back catalogue because it must be too much trouble to pick up a book and make something original for a change. I’ve said this before but I’ll say it again if we stop seeing them they’ll stop making them yet Dumbo is still in the box office top ten and why should Aladdin be any different? I know a losing battle when I see one. Aladdin is going to dominate for the next few weeks because a film aimed at children and suitable for all ages will always make its money back and then some. Recommended for the die-hard Disney fans or anyone wanting to entertain their kids for a couple of hours for everyone else Aladdin is a definite skippable movie.

It's Aladdin yes. Was the live-action adaptation necessary? Well that's a whole different matter, pretty much like with every live-action adaptation Disney has made in recent years, yet here we are.

Personally I must say that I didn't dislike it. After all, it's basically the same story of the animated classic and on that side it has no problems, however, there's nothing extraordinary or something that goes beyond being just a different version of this well-known story.

Maybe kids and young people who haven't seen the animated film will find this version more striking but in general terms here there's nothing that Disney has not done previously in these sort of adaptations.

The quality is undeniable. The sets are awesome. The clothes are great. The musical numbers are also pretty colorful and nice.
The young protagonists work sufficiently good and they have chemistry and surprisingly Will Smith doesn't suck in a role in which he could have failed enormously.

Guy Ritchie delivers a fine film but only that. Is it enough? Yes, he didn't **** up and we know he could have done it. But as I said there's no outstanding element.

Aladdin it's a film that deserves your time, it might win your attention. After all it's still a show of entertainment but I definitely believe that the rest will depend of your own expectations and the respective enjoyment you might get out of it.

Smith earns the respect with vivacious performance and is celebrated by an incredible fund, yet Ritchie's distraction could only last long enough for a three minute song.

Aladdin

Ritchie is not using the best of it. What was highlighted in the 90s animated version, that is definitely celebrated with Disney funding the makers with a room full of money and vfx artists coloring and glittering the screen with crowd pleasing fireworks and commercial artwork. What is ignored is the goofiness of the Sultan- the father of Jasmine played by Naomi Scott- and the devilishness of the antagonist. But what aches you the most, is our host, the titled character, whose innocence should have been empathetic, yet in here, the incompetence is pitifully.. well, pitied.

Along with dull writing- except for the obvious one-liners from Genie played by Will Smith that will still chuckle you- the detailing in the physical sequence that went by in the original version is majorly in scarce here. Now, the plus points. First of all, it is and will be eventually a Guy Ritchie film. Ergo, it has got style like no other Disney live version had. From daring to add a musical number in a chase scene to a brilliantly choreographed songs; dance is a major part of it and Mena Massoud is good at it along with Smith tapping to few beats.

New songs are added up and the old ones are updated with couple of new verses, which to me was like eating glass. And yes, I should not compare it to Robin Williams, but in my defense, they sang those songs and brought it that close, and no it is not an improvement. Smith's version is surely charming but is also anchored by a dull script. Aladdin is another passion project for Smith coming alive and he will rejoice it, the unsung ones will be the supporting actors along with the banner that chips up for a pretentious gold digging act as it fails to experiment with the art in the museum, once again.

'Aladdin', on the other hand, was the least interesting of the remakes so far, to me. There wasn't really anything new to this and that was one of the biggest drawbacks. Will Smith's Genie was okay but better than I thought he would be. Mena Massoud was decent, Naomi Scott was fine and Marwan Kenzari's Jafar reminded me of an angry 15-year-old. The beginning part of the film was okay but still fell flat in most areas. And the middle and end was either pretty quickly paced, or just paced so inconsistently. Some of Genie's jokes kept me somewhat entertained throughout the nearly two-hour runtime. I think the biggest complaint from me was the actual editing and how the setting looked. Not the practical set, because that was one of the best-looking sets I've seen, but the way they implanted the overly colored screen effect. If it was daytime, Agrabah and the desert just had this distracting shade of yellow and orange. If it was night, then Agrabah, the Cave of Wonders, and the desert had this annoying dark blue shade. Some CGI effects were okay, but it really all came down to the look and colors of the film. Costume design was fine, the production design was great, but I have no idea why Disney would spend all this money on amazing production design for a C- film. Overall, this film was exactly how I thought it would turn out for me. Expand

I was expecting to hate Will Smith's Genie but, surprisingly, he was one of the few high points of the film. He made Genie his own and didn't just try to clone Robin Williams and the role was all the better for it. Everything else, though.. just awful. Adding Jasmine's new, feminist pandering "I don't need no man, I'm a strong woman!", musical numbers ("Speechless" parts 1 and 2) not only felt out of place but also were cringe af. Nothing felt menacing about Jafar -- he felt like a SyFy b-rated TV movie villain. The visual effects were pretty damn good, at least. But I give the final word to my 8 year old who, as we were walking out of the theater, turned and said "That stunk, can I watch the cartoon when I get home?" Expand

Another appropriate title for this would be "Hitch & Aladdin". The spiritual successor to Hitch,AT LAST! :-D

There are 3 ways I can thank this movie for:
It made me forget the existence of a scary Jar-Jar Binks looking CG Elephant
It made Guy Ritchie think his last movie sucked hardcore so that he could've tried to make this movie look good
Again,the spiritual successor to Hitch
Because that's what this new version of Aladdin is: An unnecessary big spectacle that tries his best to be somewhat of an actual movie with things in it.
Unlike Dumbo,go see it in IMAX for the effects bonanza and pretty colors. (do it quick before Godzilla blows up your IMAX Auditorium) Trust me this time, you'll see more than a boring, lifeless Circus Tent.
The actors are really trying to sell their performances, right down to Will Smith, which is,obviously, the best part of the movie. He doesn't try to be Robin Williams by any means,to the point to where it doesn't matter if you say he or him was better, because all that matters is that,at least they're having fun playing the character. Guy Ritchie knows how to direct action sequences and (surprisingly) dance numbers,so that kept me engaged to point... (too bad there wasn't the director's signature Snorricam shot). I love this new version of the score by Alan Menken. At one point,it becomes a Hans Zimmer score, and at another,it's Rio by John Powell. "Friend Like Me" and "Prince Ali" are 10/10 scenes that are almost astounding to be in a movie of this caliber, but in a movie like this, the musical scenes can be hit-or-miss. I didn’t get what was happening in “A Whole New World” besides ‘Oh,they’re singing in a magical carpet!’,and the first part of Speechless (one of the few new songs added in the movie) was good...Until it sinks its teeth into a point where it’s no going back.
When “Speechless” gets played in full, not only is it worse than either Peter Parker dancing in Spider-Man 3 or Shia LaBeouf swinging with lots of CG Monkeys in Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull, but it’s also so laughably bad,you can call that scene “The scene where Jasmine becomes more powerful than Thanos and The Flash (or Quicksilver) thrown togheter”.
That alone made Captain Marvel look like a job well done in just 24 Hours.
The opening of the movie (until it gets to the Cave Of Wonders halfway through) is just as quick as the entirety of The LEGO Movie,it sets a really strange bar for the movie (I mean...go figure, the movie has Dan Lin as one of the producers).
I will never forgive the writers for making Jafar look like one off the best MCU Phase 1 Villains, where, unless it’s Loki, they’re all SO. DAMN. FORGETTABLE.
And some of the new stuff I could’ve easily cut out, because, with that,it feels like if we were in an alternate universe, and Batman V Superman was so good we didn’t need an Ultimate Cut to explain the little details.
But again, thanks Aladdin for making me forget about a horrific elephant. There’s a much better Elephant in here than in Dumbo that families will enjoy. Out of all the Disney live-action redos, this is the Venom of these kind of movies. So many problems in the movie, but I’ll be damned if I had a good time seeing it.

Similar to Beauty and the Beast, the film takes no real risks in presenting the same story you have already seen before. The casting is for the most part excellent, and all the big names put in solid performances, especially Smith, who doesn’t try to fill the massive shoes left by Williams, but rather puts on his own and wears them proudly, the Genie character is perhaps the boldest move the movie makes and is the main thing that could be argued as ‘not a remake’.

The musical numbers sound good (as you would expect) and the set pieces and costume work are both excellent.

The movie just lacks any real reason to invest, the plot is identical to before, though arguably worse as the pacing is awful at times as characters switch up opinions or traits on the flick of a switch just to progress the story. The musical numbers sometimes fail to move the story forward, which means shortcuts are taken outside of these numbers in order to make up for lost time, which harshly compromises the pacing and certain points of internal logic. For me personally it seriously detached me from the film and hurt my enjoyment. Though I don’t wish to mark it too severely as I appreciate that it was a personal response.

I can see why this movie is making so much money, and it will continue to do so, and it will sell well again when released to the home market, it is an enjoyable flick that families can easily digest and enjoy, even if it isn’t doing anything above and beyond.

6/10, a perfectly competent and inoffensive movie, if you like Disney, or Aladdin, you’ll enjoy it.

I wish disney would stop remaking the classics and invest in new material!!! Despite these negative points, it really is a well made and entertaining film that is worth a look esp if you're a disney fan. Expand

'Aladdin' seems like a check-list, in which scenes only happen because they happened in the 1992 original. Directed by Guy Ritchie ('Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels' and 'Snatch'), the film obviously centers around our title character (played by Mena Massoud, who does look and sound like his animated counterpart) running around and stealing from the marketplace of Agrabah along with his monkey Abu. He then meets a beautiful young woman, Jasmine (Naomi Scott), but is unaware that she is a princess. They seem to get along and almost fall in love as she finds his warm and kind charming personality somewhat rare and unique, as well as how he helped her get out of trouble. Meanwhile our main villain, Jafar (Marwan Kenzari), is after a powerful lamp, but needs a "Diamond in the Rough", and that comes from Aladdin, so he recruits him to voluntarily enter the cave of wonders and retrieve the magical possession. Aladdin, unfortunately, doesn't escape but manages to keep the lamp, and discovers that there is an all powerful Genie (A blue Will Smith) who can grant him three wishes. The two form a friendship and come up with ways for Aladdin to impress Jasmine, as well as the Genie's promise for his freedom. As I said above, the film feels like a check-list (only if you have seen the original), scenes are sometimes structured differently in an attempt to make it feel more original, and a new song is also added to make it different. The only major issue here is the CGI. While Smith does not repeat or do an imitation of what the late Robin Williams did back in 1992, and incorporates his own charisma to the role, the CGI to make Smith look like a person-like puff of blue smoke is visually jarring, as he looks inconsistent to the environment which surrounds him. For example, when he's talking to Aladdin, the light shining on one side of Aladdin's face is shining on the other side of the Genie's. It's almost as if Smith shot his scenes separately to the other actors from time to time. Plus, his movement can be a little frightening from time to time. Overall, the acting is solid, Naomi Scott is the biggest surprise from this film, and I guess it is faithful (yet massively unoriginal) to the animated classic. I am unsure as to why Disney thought Guy Ricthie (again, the director of 'Snatch') was the appropriate choice for this project. Next thing you know, they'll announce Quentin Tarantino to helm the live-action remake of 'The Little Mermaid' (1989). Expand

It is very fun to watch. The singing, acting, and visuals are great. However the plot has a lot of holes (e.g The wishes) and the blandness of Jafar and Jafar as a whole put this from good to slightly above average. Enjoyment wise it is a solid 8/10.

The movie is colorful, vibrant and upbeat, a lot of fun for the family to watch. The CGI could've been better at times, but the biggest negative was Jafer, this role was extremely poorly cast, the actor had no presence on screen, he was not menacing at all, was too young for the character, a puny weak voice, worst of all, you don't feel threaten by him at all. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you have never seen Aladdin and like CGI more then animation go right ahead.
If you think that it will improve on the old 1992 movie then I would say that you should not watch it.
SPOILERS:
- jasmine has been made more scared. Not sure why they did this but in the old movie she wasn't scared to jump to other roofs and now she is.
- Iago's personality is gone. Did you like that he got angry and his revenge on the sultan at the end? NO MORE. now he is just a bird that knows that Aladdin the diamond in the rough how? I don't know.
- carpet knows about the lamp.(didn't need to be added) Aladin also cleans the lamp like he knows something will come out of it(maybe that is just me).
- Aladdin first wish doesn't count(the rules are you rub the lamp you say I wish and that's that) now because Aladdin didn't rub the lamp a sec before he said I wish they didn't count it while to spawn the genie he had to rub the lamp so that would mean that part 1 is already complete. When he can't wish because he is underwater he gets to sign a paper that declares that he made a wish not sure why they think it was necessary.
- Aladdin is really awkward when he has to introduce himself to the sultan/Jasmin. Not sure why they did that. he even said that he was really good at pretending("If you don't have anything you have to pretend like you own everything") - The genie even when Jafar is the master just teleports the carpet if he can do that why not teleport the lamp to Aladdin's hand??
- When Jafar's staff gets broken the second time with help from the sultan the spell that Jafar cast on Iago disappears. Not sure why this happens because Aladdin didn't transform back in a prince at the same time while that was also Jafar's magic doing.
- While flying against Iago Aladdin gets hold of the lamp. Not sure why he didn't wish for Jafar's wishes to be undone but that would have made the movie shorter.
- Jafar's last wish: "For my final wish I wish to become the most powerful being in the universe more powerful than you"(you references to the genie) but he just ends up like the genie. not sure what made him more powerful.
- When Aladdin wishes the genie free he becomes a human. Why did this need changing? Why not just leave him as a ghost? Now it seems more like he was under a spell just like Jafar is now.
-I didn't really talk a lot about the extra sub-characters: Dolia(maiden of the princes) and Haki(the commander) they were both ok but were not really necessary. I would rather have seen a fight between Aladdin and Jafar like in the old movie but not it was pretty short in that part (Iago and Aladdin were fighting for some time for the lamp).
- Last but least I wanted to overlook it but some else also talked about it: Jasmin becomes the sultan. felt more cramped in and just there to please the feminists. It's not a worse ending than the original but it also doesn't really make it better. Now instead of Aladdin becoming sultan while he is not a real prince, Jasmin will become the sultan.
What I liked:
- The music, it was the original but then was changed to be more modern(beatbox was added etc.) and there were even some original songs added.
What I think they should have changed:
- when Aladdin almost gets out of the cave of wonders Jafar could just help him to get outside the cave. Then would Jafar have the lamp and could just give Aladdin some money for his troubles. If you ask why would Jafar not just let him dye in the cave? Because Aladdin isn't a thread to Jafar at first. He is just a thief that wants some money. Jafar had nothing to fear.
Something to think about:
At the start, he tells Aladdin that gold and power are not good whiches maybe that was something that the genie experienced for himself? (he also throws away Jafar's lamp just like in the old movie to the gave of wonders and says that a couple of thousand years will cool him off).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Expand
