Kågerman and Lilja bring Martinson’s poem to cinemas with a stark beauty both in its sci-fi production design and emotionally wrought performances.
This tale of a spaceship stuck wandering the cosmos after being forced off course is both impressive in its scope and intimate in its portrait of human nature under long-term duress.

What it all adds up to is a bleak “in space no one can hear your silent scream of existential despair” project. It’s bracing to be sure, but those looking for more positively aspirational fare will have a hard time.
It’s a grim vision, sure. But it’s a compelling one too, using the flash of a space opera to remind viewers that — whether on the ground or in the stars — we’re stuck with each other.
For a film that’s about decades of interstellar aimlessness, Aniara seems hopelessly rushed and superficial.
Kagerman and Lilja thoughtfully constructed their film, yet they leave nothing for the mind to do besides consume unrelenting tragedy.
It’s a film that wants to be visionary but isn’t.
Existential dread and self destructive **** space. Smart sci-fi rarely gets better than the expertly directed, shot, soundtracked and acted psychological horror film, Aniara.

This ambitious existential sci-fi offering, based on a Swedish poem of the same name, makes a valiant attempt at transcending the content, substance and style typically associated with other films of the genre. However, due to an underdeveloped script, an overreliance on viewer knowledge of the source material, more even pacing and a need for some judicious editing, the picture never quite rises to the greatness it might have been truly capable of. The film's impeccable production design and special effects and fine performances are augmented by nods to a variety of other sci-fi works, including "Solaris," "Gravity," "Passengers" and "Battlestar Gallactica," as well as allusions to "Midsommar" and various tales of hopelessly adrift seafarers. Its prolific references to matters religious, spiritual, metaphysical and sociopolitical pepper the story, sometimes effectively, sometimes not so much, resulting in a grab bag of enlightenment, frustration and assorted enigmas. In an age where our own world is seemingly being turned upside-down, the insights of this story -- had they been better developed -- could have been a godsend to a weary population, providing us all with a new, clearer understanding of where we're at and where we're headed. But, unfortunately, "Aniara" comes up short of achieving that goal -- and at a time when we could have used it most.

Imagine Red Dwarf but not funny. An admirable “hard sci-fi” pic, this visually arresting film is a depressing slog. Sadly, the little details let down the more intriguing aspects of the narrative – the captain’s beard is laughably fake, and the low budget can’t quite create the atmosphere needed for the dread generated by the premise.

Attention, il s'agit d'un film suédois...! oui, il convient de placer de grandes pancartes d'avertissement à l'instar d'ailleurs des films coréens... mais pas pour les mêmes raisons, cela dit. Les films coréens peuvent être très bizarres, cruels, choquants... ou carrément sadiques ; on sait qu'ils ne font pas dans la demi-mesure !
Mais dans un film suédois, a priori on y voit des Suédois ! comme on voit des Coréens dans un film coréen. Sauf qu'il s'agit dans ce film-là de la Suède SJW très actuelle, sans doute pas représentative à 100% mais tout de même...! ainsi, vous ne verrez que très peu de Suédois dans "Aniara". Vous verrez surtout des minorités du vivre_ensemble très majoritaires mais aussi, avant et surtout plein de femmes, car le tout féminisme et en l'occurrence le **** tourne à plein régime ici.
Comme il s'agit d'une propagande Social Justice Warriors très agressive, vous y verrez également des relations lesbiennes, incluant dans la sphère multi-culturaliste du film la seule Suédoise de la distribution : l'actrice principale !
Cela étant dit, difficile de croire avec tout ce passif politico-progressif-inclusif à cette histoire de vaisseau voyageant vers Mars, car l'écolo-gauchisme est aussi de la partie (le réchauffement climatique de ta mère etc) comme s'il s'agissait d'un hommage à la petite conne dont j'ai oublié le nom (celle à tronche d'autiste toujours en crise de nerfs refoulée qu'on invite à l'ONU, putain où va le monde !).
ça se veut réaliste mais ça ne l'est pas du tout et rien n'est crédible là-dedans, ni de près ni de loin, le petit budget n'excuse pas tout !... Le film devient de plus en plus décousu et se délite de façon alarmante dans sa décadence provocatrice jusqu'à la "fin" carrément expédiée... Il s'agit en définitive d'un film pseudo-intello, pas d'un vrai film de SF, qui se borne à délivrer sa propagande, coûte que coûte, quitte à devenir une coquille vide ! ce qu'il devient, finalement.
