An inspiring movie for young, old and everyone in between, I would be shocked if the movie’s final moments didn’t lead to a cathartic cry for every viewer. The beauty of this story is timeless.
Sewell’s book has always been a better fit for piecemeal storytelling — the book itself is divided up by Beauty’s owners — and while Avis’ script does keep the relationship between Beauty and Jo at its center, that lends an uneven treatment to many of Beauty’s later adventures.

Black Beauty is a beautiful remake of an old classic. The power of love between human and animal is so well portrayed in this film. Cinematography is spectacular, and the story is really moving. The world is full of exploitation of living creatures, human and animal and plant, we could all use more kindness.

While pretending to sing the praises of the wild nature, the film tames her in a manipulative function. "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" (Pollack 1969).

With its obvious melodrama, obviously misleading “locations” and even more obvious big stunts, Black Beauty doesn’t transcend its sentimental children’s entertainment origins. But Avis more than does the novel justice.
While much of this Black Beauty strays from the original, the spirit of empathy and combatting animal cruelty remain intact.
Avis loses the novel’s sincerity by watering down Sewell’s animal welfare plea. In this update, the humans are not as villainous. Beauty is not as prominent. And the novel’s mustang spirit diminishes into a ho-hum horse movie.
It’s a sonorously well-meaning film that bathes everything in the bland, buttery sunlight that Disney always produces and in which the human performances are as opaque as the ones given by the horses
In a story that could have offered a parade of vivid character roles, only Foy and Glen really register: a kindly park ranger (Hakeem Kae-Kazim) deserved more screen time, while the various surly faces on the Manhattan carriage-toting scene are only thinly defined.
I have the understanding that this is the sixth film adaptation of the 1877's book of the same title, and apparently there's even an animated version and a miniseries.
I guess the book has to be pretty good to achieve that or maybe too simplistic because this film is pretty inert most of the time.
It's like A Dog's Purpose but with a horse, so that should give you an idea of the formula.
Its purpose is only to be another title to increase the Disney+ catalog

It is very much on the budget end of the Disney spectrum. It is void of a real storyline with very tacky writing and a ridiculous narration by the horse. It is a rude surprise going into this movie, with McKenzie Foy as the lead who was previously the lead for Nutcracker and the Four Realms, a tent-pole picture, when it is revealed that Black Beauty is really just a direct-to-video production. It clicks when Disney's usual castle introduction is not used and and instead the Disney logo is displayed above the Black Beauty title card. I think it is a missed opportunity as Mckenzie Foy and Black Beauty could potentially have made a much more substantial and valuable film. Other than a nice message (if hypocritical, considering they are keeping a once wild horse in a stable) about caring for animals and the human horse bond, this one can be missed.
