If you like the Blaxploitation flicks of the 70s, this is your candy. If you liked Shaft, but thought it was a bit slow, this one has a little more action, and budget, and its logic matches Shaft in Africa (leads come out of nowhere and thugs appear at the unlikeliest of times).
Jack Starrett's 1973 entry in the violent inner-city drug-bust genre is talkier and more subdued than the usual fare, with a surer technical polish.
Cleopatra Jones is a good programmer with the offbeat twist of having a sexy woman detective as the lead character. The script incorporates a slew of action set pieces, capably directed by Jack Starrett.
The movie is put together in a sort of disjointed way; there are too many characters, and some of them disappear for so long, we forget them. But that doesn't matter much; the idea is to string together scenes that entertain, and Cleopatra Jones does that nicely.
The movie seems to want to be a James Bond sort of adventure in black drag, but it's more reminiscent of Batman.
A fairly tame, fairly lame blaxploitation footnote, starring drop-dead gorgeous Tamara Dobson and her improbable wardrobe.
