Far from a perfect film — the morals are clunky, the pacing awkward at points — Damsel still manages to achieve the rare distinction of being both ambitious and just so much goddam fun.
Damsel is viciously whimsical, if such a thing is possible, and it’s thrillingly subversive. But the punchline comes early, and it’s only repeated as the film progresses.

Kind of hard to imagine anyone taking this film literally. From across unknown waters we arrive at mountains and deserts, peopled by archetypes who don't talk or behave the way we expect. What we recognize is reckless violence and the belief of every male character that they somehow have a right to the nearest female. As always, these two elements bring disaster, highlighted by the conceit that we're watching a classic western whose roles are as set-in-stone as a Punch and Judy show. The comedy is both subtle and broad, the only female unscathed by the bumbling machoism is the "maybe even unique" Butterscotch, who ultimately disappears back into the magical mist. Maybe blondes really do have more fun.

As a lover of indies and original films, this film was up my alley! Daring. bold, funny, full of twists and turns that are totally unexpected! The pace was slow at times , but still this film is worth seeing. The cinematography is spectacular. Strong acting by Robert Pattinson, Mia Wasikowska, and David Zellner. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Saw it at an early film festival with a full audience. The men laughed the loudest. In an era of superhero films , this film is so original, quirky, hilarious, feminist, and different. If you enjoyed the Zellner brothers' Kumiko, you'll "get" this original film !

Damsel is a sly feminist manifesto disguised as a shaggy, amiable hangout movie. It’s a quirky, comic Western with bursts of startling violence. And it calls for a bit of a high-wire act from its gifted cast.
If you’re on their wavelength (like Kumiko, Damsel is driven by a dry sense of humor, with the studied pacing to match), you won’t mind. But if you’re not able to completely buy in, the movie’s second half might feel a bit like the long stretching out of the same, sly joke.
Damsel doesn’t go quite where we think it will, but then, surprise detours are rather to be expected in this kind of anti-quest story, and the film sometimes comes across – for all its grotesque, scabrous or surreal touches – as a little more benign than it might have been.
The writer-directors are so intent on upending expectations and startling the audience that the effort shows far too much and, in the weak second half, ends up being terribly self-conscious.
Damsel is a misguided exercise, a 113-minute mistake and a waste of time, but it does have a good opening.
Ni idea de por qué tiene una puntuación tan baja, supongo que la protagonista tiene bastantes detractores porque está de moda y además hay muchos (nacieron allá por el 1800) que aún no superan que haya pelis de acción encabezadas por mujeres. Es una película preciosa, entretenida de principio a fin y diferente. DISFRUTADLA.

'Damsel' is bold and rather peculiar offering from the Zellner brothers that threads together the notion of a western, comedy, and drama.
Robert Pattinson and Mia Wasikowska are entertaining as hell to watch and the film is unequivocally beautifully shot--equal credit needs to be given to both the location scout and the cinematographer. However, it becomes clearer and clearer as the film unfolds that the story isn't quite fully fleshed out. While there are a handful of meaningful themes and existential musings that the Zellners work into the plot, they never leap off the screen and burrow as thoughts that further germinate inside one's mind after leaving the theater.

Yet another netflix production too busy preaching to you to bother with trying to be entertaining. Its pretty mid, All the way around. Ive sat through worse. Its OK if you are really struggling to find something to watch and most likely fall asleep halfway through to.
EDIT: The lead actress is being pushed on audience way too hard by netflix. Shes got all the personality and charisma of a plank of wood. This might have been better with a more competent actress. She isnt it, chief.

I managed to stay awake through this yawner and resisted heading for the exit as the only remedy for one of the worst movies I've seen. The writing was terrible. I never realized that it was a comedy until I read the reviews. I just thought people were laughing at the ridiculous dialogue, scenes that apparently were supposed to be funny but seemed irrelevant instead, and scenes that didn't make sense. Moreover, it was obvious how the reunion was going to turn out from the beginning. I will admit the scenery and cinematography were quite pleasing. The only character I liked was the miniature horse.
