Unlike some of the other blaxploitation titles from that time, Foxy Brown is more than just a curio piece. That’s partly down to its iconic lead, but it’s also due to a strong feminist attitude which exists within that riotous, eager-to-entertain, exploitation framework.
If Foxy Brown falls just short of being peak Grier, though, it’s only because it’s a weaker version of Hill’s Coffy, from the year before.
Where Coffy had an exhilarating sense of fun underlying the mayhem, Foxy Brown is a darker, more mean-spirited picture. Rather than treating Foxy's travails as a setup for the inevitable vengeance, it seems to revel in her degradation.
Grier is an actress able to convey an amazing and unflinching strength, and she reveals the film for the dross it is.
Miss Grier is obviously durable but, unfortunately, is fast becoming a bore despite all the sex, brawls and gore in Foxy Brown.
Even by the gutter-high standards of the genre, Foxy Brown is something of a mess. Jack Hill’s screenplay has peculiar narrative gaps.
