This one is a cut-rate Gremlins, about some small, nasty creatures brought forth by a young man dabbling in the occult.
Black arts movies tend to come cheap: a dark cellar, a few candles and a robe. Deep shadow is a blessing here too because the titular trolls are absurd puppets that merely wobble about and snarl a bit.
The ghoulies in question are at least momentarily diverting, which is more than can be said for the rest of their movie. [26 May 1985, p.C6]
Because of their restricted movements and expressions, we never believe for a moment that the creatures exist, thus making the film an utter failure.
