In the end, Goodnight Mommy contains a great balance of intrigue, shock, and entertainment. The film also captures the need for a mother’s love and truly thrives when it settles into the more intricate and intimate part of its storytelling. The cast does an incredible job conveying these underlying themes in addition to leaving enough open for audiences to interpret and figure out on their own.
Fans of the first Goodnight Mommy may find it a pale, pointless copy. Newcomers, though? They should be suitably creeped out … but, alas, not wrecked.

I don't get really why people are demeaning so much this movie, actors performance was great. The movie accomplishes its purpose, to keep you entertained. It gives you little hints to notice what is going on around you for you to make the whole puzzle. It was not like those movies in which you get bored immediately and don't catch you right away, after some 15-20min I was already all in.

This is a remake of a 2015 Austrian film with the same name/plot, so I'm recycling most of my review of the original that applies to this one:
Two twin brothers enjoy an idyllic country summer until their mother (Naomi Watts) comes home from cosmetic surgery and nothing seems right. Don’t expect scares and shocks. Instead, this film is built on a creepy vibe that creates more concern than suspense. It’s a psychological thriller with a twist that was obvious way before its reveal. The 2 boys (real twins Cameron & Nicholas Crovetti) have a wonderful interaction that’s continually compelling, but the payoff, although slightly disturbing, lacks punch.

Any time Goodnight Mommy tiptoes toward the brink, there’s a hand waiting to yank it back toward mundanity.
It is still a well-made film, with fantastic acting and a beautiful, modern house set out in the middle of nowhere, but it is not the shocker that it was when it was new. Knowing the twist, and the minor changes that were made for an American audience really soften the movie. If you enjoyed the original, the American remake would be perfect fodder for your parents.
The original Austrian film had shock value and genuine, gruesome horror. This new Americanized version sands the edges off of the narrative every chance it gets.
All in all, the film is exactly as you’d imagine a Hollywood remake to be. It’s too po-faced, too stripped of its meanness. And so drearily inevitable.
This "Goodnight Mommy" replicates the basic story beats of the original but leaves out all of the tension, ambiguity, and nasty invention that made that earlier effort so effective in the first place.
first of all i didn't know this was remake . maybe i didn't watch the original thats why i liked a bit it
some familys have dark secret they don't reveal it
positive- the thrill was good + the story was new to me so it was good negative- the direction could be better overall a average thriller

I read this remake wasn't well received by critics and was deemed inferior and unnecessary, and I ask:
Isn't that the case for 95% of all the US remakes?
And have they learned not to keep doing them?
And the answer to both questions remains the same: You'd better watch the original.

Remake considered useless and depowered compared to the **** 2014 Austrian movie, although the pair of directors of the original is among the executive producers of this US version together with Naomi Watts who plays the protagonist. I have no prejudices against remakes while I have them against a Shyamalan model style, which tends to focus on the final twist even when the story told is not engaging enough to arouse interest in its conclusion, whatever it is. "Goodnight Mommy" is just above mediocrity and Watts is almost 54, the right age for roles by now as a grandmother.

It could've been worse, but this is entirely unnecessary. A psychological horror film devoid of tension and perversity. Bland and boring. Hollywood never learns.
