The script is very well written, the atmosphere is both bright and dreary, the scares are inventive and acting is great: these kids really have strong futures ahead. Bill was fantastic as Pennywise, although not as memorable as Curry, it's definitely a better, more frightening performance. The use of CGI in the film is done well... so well that i had trouble knowing what was practical and what wasn't. The girl who played Beverly was the standout performance, putting on the strongest front when with the boys while having to hide the darkest pain. Finn Wolfhard cracked me up as Richie, Jack Grazer did a great job playing the fast talking mummy's boy, Jeremy Ray Taylor as Ben (the new kid who's bullied for his weigh) had me sympathising with him the most. Lastly, shout out to the actors who played the bullies, they were almost a frightening as Pennywise. I f*cking hated Henry. I also f*cking hated Beverly's creepy pedo Father. Whoever said "they start recycling cliched horror monsters of yesteryear" obviously has no clue about IT. Someone else said "Lacks the Chemistry, wit and production of the original"...Is that a joke? I decided to see this having recently viewed the 90's mini series with Tim Curry. I felt this film did an excellent job of telling it's story. Like any good horror, afterwards, it left me with the sense that something might be right behind me! Overall IT 2017 provides a highly watchable journey that sets up a sequel which I now cannot wait to see. If you're a fan of the genre this is a must-see.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film doesn't work because it doesn't add up to anything. It's another in a long line of recent "franchise-y" films that are more about their existence than about anything resembling a coherent story or theme. This film, taken on its own terms, is about a boogeyman who's mostly a clown and a group of kids who find his house to bludgeon him to death. That's it, and even that's pushing it.

Yes, Pennywise says that famous catchphrase about floating, and even better the movie interprets it literally, as if the quote exists outside a reality tied to story, character, or theme - in this film, kids actually float down in his sewer. Ohhh creepy, that's what it means.

The whole thing is just a serious of intermingled "scare" scenes, one for each kid, wherein they are given the barest bones of character to make it work. Bill stutters, but only like once or twice and it never matters at all. Richie is a smartass, but he dresses cool and hip and is woke so modern audiences love him - his character doesn't grate at all making you wonder why he's such a "loser". Ben is fat, but in a fun superficial way and he's clearly not bothered by it. Mike's character might as well not exist at all (his entire raison d'etre is to have access to cattle guns). Eddie has his inhaler and uses it all of like once - he's more of a pill junkie. He seems rather charming and smart, and his mother is a bloated caricature that does nothing for his character either. Stan is a cipher.

At least Beverly has a some development, but it's driven home in such a broadly obvious over-the-top way that again, it feels like a comment on people's prior conception of her character and not as a real character herself in this story. Her dad is a one-dimensional sexual predator, and her ability to overcome him and in turn Pennywise, rewards her with a damsel in distress storyline that ends in a literal kiss from Prince Charming to wake her - there doesn't seem to be any irony here either.

The sequel to this almost can't exist based on how inept the storytelling in this one is - it will pretty much have to be it's own standalone film. I don't like to judge a film based on its source material, it should stand on its own, but this film fails miserably in both regards so it's a bit of moot point.

The acting is uniformly good however. The kids are well cast, and do their parts well. Bill Skarsgard has potential, though it's wasted by lackluster use of him. There's some kind of shaky-cam run at the camera trick that's bafflingly inept and seems like a cop out by a story that has run out of tricks and doesn't trust an actor to do his job creating tension.

A good example of this is the opening scene - little Georgie has this creepy encounter with Pennywise, and he's charming and owning the screen, when inexplicably the camera cuts to some old woman coming out of her house with a cat, then it cuts back to Pennywise and all the tension has started to dissipate. Then the movie has the "cajones" to literally show Georgie's arm getting torn off and Pennywise's mouth full of sharp teeth. Cut to the cat staring down at the street. That old trick - Alien first did it in 79. It's all so explicit way too early in the film and it kills all of the atmosphere and dread that could have permeated this.

Why. was. there. so. little. Silver. Hi. Yoo. Silver. Away. There's a throwaway line lost at the peripherals about the bike but otherwise nada. Why?

And boy did it bring me back. The child actors put in outstanding performances in a movie where the adults are thankfully absent. This movie is more than just a one trick pony. We have, coming of age, child abuse , a tender romance and a horror rolled into one with a large dollop of sardonic teen humour. Worked well . Usual jump-out of your skin tactics which to some of the jaded are cliched but to me were awesome and a liberal use of vulgar language which was strangely appropriate and satisfying. The clown is terrifying and nightmarish…... And there is a chapter 2 to come..

Disturbing as well is scary people with obvious psychological issues downvoting everything in sight. Perfectly good innocuous reviews? Stop enabling the mentally unwell Metacritic. It’s very uncool..

Just loud and obnoxious "scary" scenes without any tension. The kid scenes are decent, but the whole movie is just a bit tiring.
There was a good movie in there, but the execution is quite bad.

You would think that something seen in all the marketing and ads makes the movie something different, that it does something revolutionary, that it improves upon previous horror movies while paving the way for more terrifying adventures led by loveable kid characters. Well you would be right, to some degree.
The story features a collection of teenagers living in the small American town of Derry. At the beginning of the movie we are shown the younger brother of their leader, Bill being brutally murdered by Pennywise the clown who dwells in the sewers. This sets off a chain of frightening and creative scenes where each member of the losers club is faced with Pennywise taking the form of their greatest fear. They then make the collective decision to pursue the clown and kill it once and for all.
The story says relatively uncomplicated which means there aren't too many times where you find yourself confused. There are also plenty of scenes where the characters are able to bond with one another and grown their relationship. Each actor gives an outstanding performance and work the personality of their respected character flawlessly. There is no sugar coating with the characters who all have social, domestic and school related problems. This makes them easier to connect with given that they all have problems they cant outrun much like ourselves. Bill Skarsgard also gives Pennywise a quirky yet demonic personality which differs only slightly from the performance given by Tim Curry. They both relish in terrorising these children but Skarsgard proves noticeably more sinister and serious. I am not saying having a more serious Pennywise is a bad thing but it only makes him more similar to hundreds of other serious faced, emotionless bad guys from other horror movies. But Pennywise wouldn't be anything without his fearsome talent.
It has scares by the dozen and each one is as creative and spine-chilling as the last, each one manages to connect with something deeply feared by their corresponding character wether it be Bill seeing Georgie decay before him or the Leper chasing Ed, a child with OCD. Rarely is any blood shown which only highlights the situation and effects when it does make an appearance. But for every scare the kids are faced with there is a real life problem to go along with it, this makes the idea of conquering pennywise represent tackling our own fears and problems in real life, and the best way to do it is as a team. It is not a flawless movie. The story has many moments and details that feel quite useless and add nothing to the story, this wouldn't be so bad if they added to the humour or added more depth to the characters but they don't which only drags the movie on for longer. As I have said before I am quite fond of the scares in the movie but they are also guilty of jump-scares, a notoriously cheap way to scare the audience. About seventy percent of times you will hear a scream from the audience because of a jump, a mistake the movie also makes is how surprisingly well the kids seem to deal with life with Pennywise. Every time a terrifying scene concludes we see the characters doing something completely normal where they appear unaffected. This manages to lessen the impact of any scares and makes Pennywise seem like a nuisance than a threat.
So in conclusion, It is a fresh and uniquely scary take on the Stephen king novel and one that is well worth your money and your appreciation.

As a story, It has three main threads: the first (and most advertised) is the horror aspect; following that is mystery, and then coming of age. Whilst each of these areas are visited in the film, none of them are really given enough time to breathe and can come across as either rushed or half-baked, leading to an incomplete experience. The main draw for audiences for the film would be the horror and mystery aspects, but much of the screen time is dedicated to the coming of age story, which often feels disjointed to the rest of the film. These moments feel a little too light and comedic given the subject matter. I occasionally felt as though each part was written separately and put together at the end, as characters would suffer from extremely traumatic experiences and then not bring them up when they were with their friends the next day. I thought that this may be down to It messing with their memory, but it is never made clear and can feel a little weird. Possibly the strangest example of this is a light hearted cleaning montage of a bathroom which-- the scene before-- had been the stage of one of the most distressing moments in the story.

The horror aspects of the film all felt a little rushed and lacking in tension. Each follows a strict formula: the manifestation of a character's fear appears, there's a close up of said scary thing, then it runs at the character who promptly escapes. The first few times this happened put me on edge a little bit, but by the fourth time, they came across as a weak attempt at dark humour rather than being legitimately scary. No time is really given for tension to build up for the horror, which is absolutely crucial in the same way a good joke needs time to build up to a punchline. I wasn't too sure what to expect coming into the film, but it was sold to me as a friend as being the story of a community slowly being controlled and overwhelmed by a force of pure evil. There was no build up in atmosphere or darkening of the world to show this. The horror moments just happened, ended, and the plot rumbled on. A good contrast to this would be Paranormal Activity, The Shining or Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable, in which the malevolent forces' build up in power is felt everywhere and becomes almost oppressive, building up to a brutal crescendo at the end. There was none of this here: the final raid on It's lair felt like some bored kids trying to pass the time rather than a necessary act to end evil's hold on a small town. The mystery of It's nature is alluded to but never really looked at. One of the kid's does some investigation and unsettling pictures from the past are shown, which worked very well and pulled me in, but this was quickly shelved and didn't really go anywhere. Overall, I feel that two things could have been done to improve the film: the first would be to tell more stories through subtext and the second would be to make it a miniseries in order to free up more hours to dedicate to plot threads. Some better editing and use of subtexts would really free up time that could have been spent exploring the nature of It and to allow horror elements to breathe. Around an hour is spent establishing that each character is a social outcast and that they are being bullied; this could have been shortened to a few minutes with a montage of them being bullied or even just establishing them as a group that already know each other and have them being chased by the bullies in their car. The whole plot with the bullies doesn't really go anywhere either. We see one being possessed but that ends without really building tension or threatening the group past a small power struggle. This may sound overly negative, but it's mainly borne of disappointment rather that disdain. The sense of setting and world-building were top notch, and some of the characterisation worked really well. I don't thing the film has sold me to watch the second chapter when it releases next year, but I have already picked up the novel it was adapted from and I am eager to start reading it.

The disappointing thing about most horror movies is they usually feel like a bunch of scary scenes lazily strung together with some lackluster storyline. "It" actually feels like a real movie that just happens to be scary, which is how the best horror movies are. The writing, the acting, the thrills, and the cinematography are all very spot on. I'm especially impressed with how well all the child actors performed. As far as scariness goes, it's not necessarily super scary, but almost every scene manages to be thrilling in some way, so overall it's very intense and very fun. I would definitely recommend "It". It's a very satisfying horror movie, a worthy remake, and I'm definitely looking forward to chapter two! Expand

Some clown moments really left an impression, especially the scene in the garage (photo viewing) and the one with Bev, after a big moment at her home place (don't mean the sink one). A small critic is the montage/transition of the movie when it comes to the encounter with the clown for every kid. Oh and some of those CGI balloons :) All in all a very good adaption of the book, adding a lot of the missing stuff from the 90s movie. Will probably go see it a 2nd time. Well done Expand

With their own quirks, plenty of time to see them interact, and fantastic acting by all, I loved every second of them on screen together. Of course the movie goes into some cliched horror movie things (which I won't mention) but overall I was shocked at how well this film blended drama, really funny comedy, and downright scary moments. Two scenes in particular freaked me out and neither were particularly big scare moments. Also, neither actually features a clown, something I'm not really sure I get why people are actually afraid of. The first happens in the background, during a library scene. The second is a painting...that's all I'll say about those.

Also, every character stands out and was memorable. I'd absolutely hang out with any of them if they were real people and definitely related to a few. Besides the guys in the group there was a breakout performance by the female character. Pennywise was also brilliantly portrayed here. Creepy, relentless, and of course, scary. While no actual clown moments were all that nightmare inducing, there's no one that can honestly say they didn't get effected by the dread and force in which he hunted each character. During a house scene every character gets separated and goes through some pretty torturous moments, all while we get to see them act exactly like we would. Which brings me back to the acting/writing. There's no "too smart for their age" kid here...no kid acting like a grown up. All these kids are scared and freaking out on their own and band together at the end when they realize they're all part of a stronger unit. With the combination of a terrifying villain, several strong heroes, great character arcs by all, and a perfect length to let you experience everything and care about everyone, "It" is right up there in my top 5 films so far this year.

"It" was entertaining overall, scary at times, visually appealing, but lacking in an overall artistic vision. Since I do recommend seeing it, and there are plenty of good aspects of the movie, I'm going to focus on the few things that I"It" was entertaining overall, scary at times, visually appealing, but lacking in an overall artistic vision. Since I do recommend seeing it, and there are plenty of good aspects of the movie, I'm going to focus on the few things that I thought really missed the mark.
The movie is obviously supposed to be horror at heart, but the horror elements were often undermined by misplaced comedy. During the more intense moments, where life is literally on the line, no kid in real life is going to be joking around about something stupid in that moment, but in "It," it happens pretty routinely. It really undercuts the believability and breaks immersion when this happens, and makes you wonder what the director was trying to achieve.
The other gripe I have it with the storytelling. Before major events, usually you have some lead-up or foreshadowing so that when a character does something significant, you know why they are doing it. In "It," the characters were often doing some pretty major actions with seemingly little reason to do so. There are also a few parts in the movie that only make sense if you have read the book or have seen the original 1990 movie, making it so that this movie doesn't entirely stand on its own.
Misplaced comedy and shortcutted storytelling aside, this was a pretty entertaining movie. The visual effects and locations were well-done and creepy, and it made me jump in my seat once.
So, go see "It," but expect to see a very "hollywood" release, for better or for worse.

This is not just a horror movie: it's a STORY! They finally made justice to Stephen King's work this time around.
It's a solid 9/10 movie. Could've been a 10/10 if it were less funny and a bit darker, but that's just my opinion.

It pulls very few punches. Something all too rare and actually very surprising for such a mainstream horror flick. I applaud director Andrés Muschietti for having the integrity to do so. Lord knows he could have toned everything down and still made plenty of money at the box-office simply on the name alone. The actual scares in the film are of the funhouse variety. It's big-thrills, large and flashy, and almost rapid fire. While there's a great little atmosphere to things, it doesn't change the fact that IT simply isn't very frightening. Instead it's more exciting and outright fun to watch Pennywise torment the kids. As a result I was able to deal with the fact that I wasn't exactly quaking in my boots. There's also the fact that the movie has such a great, memorable villain. One portrayed excellently by Bill Skarsgård. If they nail the sequel I have no doubt Pennywise will finally be held to same level of respect as Freddy Kruger, Michael Myers, Leatherface, and Jason Vorhees by becoming one of the iconic horror villain icons in the mind of just about every horror fan, and not just he clued in. Heck, this movie might even be enough to do that on it's own.

The real strength of the movie is in it's characters and story. Both of which are brimming with heart and humor. More so than we usually see from this genre. It's about friendship, facing your fears, and is funnier than most comedies. It's a blood-soaked coming of age tale that's done rather believably (given the premise) in just about every area. There is even a nice amount of fidelity to the source material and the new stuff fits right in.

There is a little something missing from the movie however. Some of the book's core themes didn't make the cut. We never really get to see the effects IT has on the town as a whole. How everybody seems to ignore what's going on, such as the adults turning blind eyes to acts of cruelty that regularly occur between the kids. I also found a little bit of a problem with the movie's depiction of Henry Bowers. We don't get to see his transformation from regular bully to legitimately dangerous psychopath. He's just homicidal from the get go and there's no context as to why he is so aggressive towards Ben Hanscom in the way that he is. Another complaint is that the movie doesn't do much with Mike Hanlon. He's the only member of the Loser's Club who feels left out for the majority of the film.

While not without it's flaws, IT is still very much a triumph. With a stellar cast of genuinely teenage actors (the standouts being Wolfhard and Lillis), strong writing, entertainingly brutal thrills and a great sense of humor, IT is an all around great time at the movies. IT also stands as a satisfying adaptation of a Stephen King work. The most satisfying in quite a long time. IT easily stands amongst the top of the pack in terms of that. As a huge fan of the book I was quite entertained. I had a blast and highly recommend giving it a shot. Even if you haven't read the book, it's still just a really good horror movie in it's own rights.

I found myself really engage throughout the run time of this film. It was really easy for me to get swept away and just have a lot of fun. Let's take a look at some of the best parts:

1.Acting- I was genuinely surprised at just how good the performances in this movie were. Espcially from Skarsgård, Wolfhard, Grazer and Lieberher. It was really easy to buy into every one as characters and to start to see them for who they were portraying. Lieberher played Bill Denbrough, a young teenage boy who has a stutter, when watching this movie it is immediately one of the first things you will notice but as time goes on it began to feel natural and it wasn't noticed anymore. That is due to excellent acting both by Lieberher and those around him. Skarsgard did an amazing job as well, he was intense and creepy. His voice was haunting and his mannerisms sent chills down my spine. In my eyes, he out performed Tim Curry in creating a truly intimidating and terrifying presence.

2.Comedic Relief- So this movie has quite a bit of comedic relief, and a large part of it was from the interactions with the kids. Finn Wolfhard really delivered a solid performance, and was a huge standout in the comedic area. Any time a movie has a comedic relief aspect to it, it has the potential to go horribly wrong. It handled itself really well it was smart and strategic about the timing of it's comedy. Muschietti did a really impressive job with making a huge part of the comedy physical as well. There were scenes when the kid's were in scary situations and one of them would use their inhaler during a suspenseful moment. It all worked and felt seamless to the movie, while really developing the nature of the characters and provided a strong underdog feel.

3.Tone- I was really impressed with how Muschietti created a pretty unique tone for the movie. He did a good job with his color grading and his editing to help create this almost realistic feel. His shots felt natural and grounded, so when stuff was going crazy on screen, I felt like I was there. He used a lot of simple camera tricks to pull off big moments. A lot of the time in modern film, things don't feel natural. Most lighting in movies can almost give off a glossy feeling and give off the "I'm watching a movie" vibe. It didn't feel that way. It was small and it felt like I was apart of the kids group experiencing all of this with them.

4.CGI use- CGI in any film can either help it quite a bit or it can distract in a lot of ways. The CGI with Pennywise the clown felt real. It didn't look cheap or feel that way at all. It just felt like it was all happening. This is because of the amazing practical effects in the movie. Muschietti and Skarsgård worked hard to make Pennywise scary on his own, and then brought it the CGI to really sell the full thing. Now this movie was not perfect. Let's look at what could've been better: 1.Scariness- Now, this might be an unrealistic expectation I had from watching the original It back in my childhood. I just was not scared throughout the run time of It. I never felt the same sense of urgency I do in other horror films. Don't get me wrong, the scares in this movie worked. It was fun to get startled they took their time setting up some really good moments. There was just no sense of tension from scene to scene. It all felt deflated after the big moments. This is also due to the marketing of the movie. I think the marketing made it out to be this terrifying horror movie. Before the screening of Annabelle Creation, they showed a clip of It. This was prefaced with Stephen King talking about how scary this movie was and to only watch "If you dare." This made me feel like It was going to knock me out of my seat, when in reality it was only kind of creepy.

2.Underused Characters- One of the biggest issues I had with It was the feeling that some of the characters weren't used to their full potential. The 1st act of the movie did a beautiful job introducing us to each character, and allowing us to kind of get to know them through their fears and who they are. Toward the 3rd act it felt like some of the characters were tossed to the back. Namely Stan (Wyatt Oleff,), Mike (Chosen Jacobs) and Ben (Jeremy Ray Taylor). While the characters of Bill (Jaeden Lieberger) Richie (Finn Wolfhard) and Eddie (Jack Dylan Grazer) really were prominent. We didn't see as much with Stan, Ben or Mike. The whole premise of the 3rd act was to be together and to stand together against Pennywise. But the team aspect didn't feel inclusive of the others. Overall, I had a great time with It. I thought it was one of the best remakes and adaptations I have seen. It had terrific performances, really entertaining comedic moments with some beautiful looking shots and CGI. It did fall a little toward the 3rd act with the failure to include all of the characters they introduced throughout the first act. It was a perfectly fine scary movie. I am going to give It a B+.

For this movie adaptation of Stephen King's notoriously terrifying novel, it still has an element that seems friendly, but it will definitely scare the crap out of you of how crazy this movie is. The writing by True Detective's Cary Joji Fukunaga truly impresses me, the direction set by Andy Muschietti is very well executed, and the performances by the young cast truly shines in this movie. Let's also not forget about Bill Skarsgard's portrayal as Pennywise The Clown. That man right here can easily scare the crap out of you! Bill Skarsgård did to Pennywise the Clown what Heath Ledger did to the Joker. It’s never easy to successfully reinvent an iconic character and his performance is chilling to the core. Stunning effects, eerie music and a solid cast. You really believe the Losers club are all real friends, their chemistry was perfect. The tone from the novel has been brought to life in a way that the original never achieved. Sure it gets in its fair share of jump scares but it is well above the cheap and lazy horror movies we’ve gotten in recent years. The atmosphere is electric. I was blown away, horrified and enthralled all at the same time. It’s a horror movie you won’t want to miss. Go see IT and you’ll float too. Highly recommended. Expand

Clowns have never freaked me out, the original sort of put a nice dark spin on clowns which I saw to be awesome. It the original was brilliant and in now way is this movie a better film; it’s just a perfectly put together remake respecting both films as equal. Indeed, while this film is more frightening, captivating, engaging, and simply well-produced than the 90's cult classic, it also helps streamline, normalize, and enhance the source material itself, in all its idiosyncratic glory. This is an incredibly well-realized piece of horror filmmaking with terrific world-building and magnificent performances all over (particularly from those of the film's "Losers Club"). And while I find it may deviate a bit too much from its own remarkably well-established tone here and there, I'd still say it's nothing less than an achievement overall. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is one of the best horror movies I've seen in recent years. Pennywise is incredibly creepy and scary. What I like most is the trailers and scenes found online did not spoil the movie. The actual movie goes way more into these scenes and makes them longer. What happens to Georgie at the beginning genuinely shocked me. I felt fear from Pennywise and his various other forms. I felt humour for Richie and the rock fight scene. I felt disgust at the molestation elements present. I felt sadness because of Georgie and his brother. This movie is amazing. Go watch it! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I came into IT having read the book twice and watching (and hating) the original TV mini-series. As a fan of Stephen King’s novel and the disappointment from the mini-series, I was hoping that a cinematic attempt at portraying the beloved Pennywise would definitely work. It is safe to say that not only did they achieve that, but they also made one of the best horror films to be released in the last decade.

It was terrifyingly good. The CGI, while cartoony and rushed at times, looked believable still and I believe that the cartoon-style was intentional to show the psychological effect on the kids, rather than the forms IT takes being literal. Andres Muschietti did an excellent job at directing this film, especially on such a tight budget of $30 million. For context, Deadpool constantly claimed how low its budget was and how many limits it had, and they had a budget of $50 million. With a lower and tighter budget, IT exceeded all expectations and has since broken *many* records.

The flow of the film is a major con for most critics, but I actually liked the switch-up of a coming-of-age story to a horror film in such low space of each other, and I liked it because it kept you on the edge of your seat the entire time, because you’d never know when the horror ended or started. What I absolutely love about this film and Muschietti’s directing is the subtlety.

SPOILER TERRITORY

I can’t believe the amount of subtle horror in this film.
When they were helping Ben in the alleyway, Pennywise’s face was spray painted on the wall for the last few seconds of the scene, and it really brought forward the mood of the film. There were tons more; like the clown moving its head when Richie walked past, the librarian death staring Ben in the library, etc. All of these subtle horrors make the film so much more rewarding if you watch it on multiple occasions. I know I’m going to go watch it a second time and then I might update my review now that I can focus on the film rather than be mesmerized.

The ending was very different to the novel, as in the novel obviously the controversial scene occurs, but they did not include Pennywise turning into its true form, and the Losers’ Club seeing it as a spider. Whether or not I got that mixed up with when they *spoiler alert* come back as adults, I don’t know. I’ll need to reread.

I liked the gore, it really wanted that R rating. Georgie screaming before being dragged into the storm drain was really brutal and shocking. It set the tone from the very beginning and I loved every second of it. For the long runtime of 2 hours 15 minutes, it flew past.
However, because of the constant switch-up between genres the story NEVER has time to breathe. The experience is so intense, and maybe a few scenes where we get to know more of the kids families would let the story have a bit of breath before bringing back Pennywise; speaking of which, that was my ONLY issue with Skarsgard’s Pennywise; he had too much screentime in my opinion, and I feel that made his presence less creepy at times as we knew he was going to be there. His other forms were tremendous, and the inclusion of the Leper was superb, however Pennywise was too common and we were spoilt.

I’d love to rate IT – Chapter One a 9/10 based on all the points I have explained. I cannot wait for Chapter 2 and hope to see where they take the story.

It's not Saw or the Ring or even The Babadook. It's not designed to keep you afraid and disturbed for the entire runtime. This is a monster movie, a nightmarish adventure story. And because of that it's massively enjoyable, fun, tense and yes, sometimes terrifying. The pacing is perfect, the story never once drags, and the acting is aces all the way around. I felt that, at most, one or two moments were a bit indulgent or cliche, but even these blips registered as fun, not distracting or tonally inconsistent. I'm not usually a fan of horror films, but I adored the creepy, shapeshifting hell out of this movie from the script to the lush cinematography of the fictional New England setting. The filmmakers earned every penny of the astoundingly great opening weekend they had, and I hope it continues to charge along into October. Happy Halloween, more than a month early! Expand

Плюсы:
-Отличная актёрская игра что Билла Скарсгарда(Пеннивайз в его исполнении великолепен,ничем не уступает Тиму Карри),что и всех детей в фильме.
-Атмосфера ужаса держится везде как надо.

It is a really good adaption of the book (minus the orgy thing of course). However, what a lot of reviewers seems to misunderstand, is that this isn't just a horror movie.

It's a coming-of-age thriller with supernatural elements. The purpose of the scares isn't to scare you, but to cater to the fears of each individual kid in the losers club.

With that being said, there are some genuinely unnerving scenes in the movie, but it has it's focus on the characters themselves, where the focus should be.

As for Pennywise, it's hard to compare Curry and Skarsgaard, as they depict two wildly different variants of the infamous clown. Curry was the creepy child molester type and Skarsgaard is just plain frightening.

The movie has great cinematography and a good flowline of time, as well as great dialogue and acting. The one thing that may be slightly annoying for some, is that some of the scene to scene scares, doesn't always seem to stick with the kids.

An absolutely perfect movie. It was thrilling and terrifying in every way. Plus, Pennywise the Dancing Clown was a fantastic villain. If you like horror, you will love It.

Good:
- The Georgie scene was very well done. It might make you cry. - Dialogue - Though different from the book (there were MANY changes), the structure of the plot worked, even though it made the movie hard to be scary (too much Pennywise moments in short time). It could have been a pretty decent movie even without the clown in it. - Bill, Beverly, Eddie and Richie's character development was good (some others were sidelined unfortunately).
- The shift from the 50s to the 80s worked out well. It felt authentic. Also they left out all the sexual stuff from the book (Thank God, I was thinking at the end if that scene were in the movie, it would have gotten wierd). - Overall a good movie. Bad:
- CGI (very fake looking like the Conjuring 2's Crooked Man. It really reduces the scare factor). Also the shaking and quick movement was more ridiculous than scary. - Character development (Henry Bowers and Ben Hanscomb in particular). However as a group, the characters were alright. - Pacing - Lining up countless Pennywise scenes in a short amount of time. This is terrible pacing for a horror movie. No build up, just jumpscare after jumpscare after jumpscare. It got repetitive. The more you see the monster, the less scary it becomes. There were some standout moments though. It also was necessary to tell each loser's encounter with the clown but like I said, it got repetitive. I'll be generous and give it a 7 because reading the book always makes the movie harder to enjoy. I also have never hyped a movie up like this in years. I will enjoy it more the second time now that I know what changes were made and what to expect. This is a very SIMPLIFIED version of the kid's section of the massive book. They also intentionally left the mystery of It's origin and deadlights for the sequel.

"Beep Beep Richie!"

I'm not much of reader when it comes to books. The reason why I couldn't care less when a book gets adapted into film, because not every word is gonna translate well on screen. However, I do remember at a young age watching the 1990 adaptation starring the amazing Tim Curry. While I was never scared, due to it's goofy and sloppy scenes, but Curry performance left a last long impression on me and other people. Re-watching the TV movie didn't help to painfully realize how out dated it is. I wouldn't even call it good, just bad. If a reboot was ever needed, this was it. Now here we are today.

"It" (2017) is a massive improvement and avoids watering it down like other terrible TV movie adaptations. While not on the same level of greatness like "The Shining", "Stand By Me" or "The Green Mile" in terms of quality, but compare to "The Dark Tower" that came out last month, this is pretty strong.

It's not the scariest movie I've seen this year, as the biggest problem is the loud jump scars that feels repetitive and destroys any unsettling moments. Not to say there isn't any, just wish it stayed away from being too mainstream horror.

I like how brutal and violet this got. Especially the beginning which took me off guard of how much it went that far. With no age rating holding it back, kids are acting like kids. Swearing and them physically getting hurt. There was even an attempt rape with one of the kids. As I said, it doesn't hold back on anything.

Bill Skarsgård absolutely kills it as Pennywise. His appearance is both intriguing and terrifying that it can give a grown man nightmares. The smartest thing Skarsgård did was not copy Curry's performance and instead do a different take. Everything from the devilish smile, twisted sense of humor, and the demonic Scooby-Doo voice added lays to the character, giving it life. Who knows, he might be this generations Freddy Krueger. Even in the scene when Pennywise started dancing was funny, but with his head not moving with the rest of the body and eyes locked onto you, it's pretty scary.

All the child actors were pretty great as well. Showing a positive future ahead of them. Finn Wolfhard, Jaeden Lieberher, Sofia Lillis, Jeremy Ray Taylor, and Jack Dylan Grazer are ones to keep your eye on for whatever they do next. The losers club are pretty much The Goonies, but better.

The pacing could've been a lot more sharper, as the 2nd act really did drag. There were a few unintentionally hilarious moments that wasn't meant to be taken that way.

Overall rating: You'll float too.

Each kid has his/her own experience with IT, but the experiences were often comical until the scary ass **** clown showed up. The clown is quite terrifying, but what I found surprisingly awesome was the strangely psychotic, life threatening yet comedic relationship IT has with the kids. He has this dynamic personality that's really interesting. Sure, he's insane and sadistic, but he values his life just like the kids value their's. So it's like a game of cat and mouse between them. Definitely looking forward to chapter 2! Expand

A diabolically unlaughable clown.

When children of all ages begin to disappear mysteriously in the small and the acerbic town of Derry, a clan of little boys, self- recognized under the pseudonym of The Losers' Club, will have to face their biggest and most remote fears, coming in the form of saffron hair, creepy nose, accused forehead, manipulative eyes and puffy balloons with great amounts of terror. Now, say hello to Pennywise!

After Will Poulter dropped out, Bill Skarsgård was the one who seized with propriety and promptness of the star antagonistic role. His Pennywise is rogue, disturbing and dreadful, however, having to keep solid his function of film adaptation, the character relegates his duty to produce fear in order to have a preference for a more fantastic vision, utopias that seriously impair the impact it must have in the genre. Most of the jump-scares coming from Bob Gray are discredited by the perceptible and even crappy CGI saturation, however, ingenuity and originality in the introduction of each of his appearances is laudable and is one of the most remarkable and spooky facts as far as horror is concerned. It's disappointing to testify that despite his performance full of strength and magnetism, he never managed to reach the levels of glory of the opening sequence.

After the abrupt and disquieting Cary Fukunaga departure, Andy Muschietti is put behind the cameras impregnating his hoarding touch for horror in every frame, marks revealed by impressive Hollywood debut "Mama". It has to be recognized that Muschietti fathoms the ways to conceive and play with the camera in order to set up an in crescendo atmosphere, Besides having a critical eye to conceive beautiful visuals and moving characters, however, the filmmaker loses control of the film at the instant that sets aside the importance and coherence of the story by cheap and ephemeral scares. It's also worth highlighting a homogeneous mixture of genres and original tension sequences, having the ability to revolutionize the ablatives of the audience in the twinkling of an eye. In addition to being the greatest pillar for the movie, he proudly exhibits clear references to today's horror film; to name just one: "The Conjuring" universe, with the use of infinite horror tricks, in fact, one scene and one character resemble some particulars of the third installment of Wan's world. The under-age actors are, far and away, a mass appeal for the plot, their performances are sparkling and touching in the formation of the audience-characters fundamental link. While the infants will always be much more likely to create a true connection, the young septet achieves a relatively high-performing level, however, many of them do it with sadly stereotyped characters as Finn Wolfhard's big- mouthed comic relief (Richie Tozier), Jeremy Ray Taylor's loving and credulous paunchy (Ben Hanscom) and Chosen Jacobs' tormented boy (Mike Hanlon). But the tradition is broken with tremendously novel characters and zero clichés as the tough-minded and human protagonist Jaeden Lieberher (Bill Denbrough), the incredibly Jewish Wyatt Oleff (Stanley Uris) and, of course, Sophia Lillis' subversive and bad-ass role (Beverly Marsh), who is certainly one of the most fascinating female juvenile performances in recent horror.

Written by Chase Palmer, Cary Fukunaga and Gary Dauberman, of course, on Stephen King's legendary pedestal, the story and script are below average in general terms. They choose to focus attention explicitly on the meetings between the members of the club and the Dancing Clown, giving sub-plots of dramatic weight to the supporting characters, in addition, the self-same main character doesn't get a short mention about his mother and father, it merely presents the moral and emotional conflict with his traumas, comrades and his little brother. Andy Muschietti doesn't disappoint, but sadly he doesn't overwhelm us. His remake/revival of Pennywise tale, which will come in only two installment, provides sufficient amount of fidelity in the visual field, however, the movie clearly fails to show its narrative aspects and horror tools, which fall apart, gradually, because of the sudden ton of fantasy that stifles the last act. For habitual audiences, "It" (2017) will endure breaking records thanks to an efficient marketing campaign, global childhood nostalgia, the sincere literary followers, the great doses of suspense and traditional jump-scares, however, for the most draconian and true lovers of the genre and the works of the author, the film doesn't really explore new horizons, besides, suffers from a lack of true horror nuance, slighting it by drama and suspense experiences that leave us a sense of nonconformity and even sadness when we see rolling down the closing credits, due to the abrupt ending of the story that does not have the same horror dimensions as the acts of its evil villain.

The entire cast of kids was phenomenal, especially considering this is a bunch of relatively fresh faces, similar to Stranger Things. Ironically, Finn Wolfhard (Mike Wheeler) stars as Richie in this film.

The depiction of Pennywise is genuinely unsettling and Skarsgard does a fantastic job. The visuals are very well done, but nothing too far above or beyond the average modern horror film these days. However, the soundtrack is a cut above the rest. Benjamin Wallfisch, who has had relatively limited experience scoring blockbusters, really shines in this film. Hopefully he does just as well with Blade Runner 2049. The production value can seem a little corny and some little details don't appear to be exclusively 80's-90's, but it's still worthy of praise.

The premise of the film follows rather closely the novel by Stephen King. To appreciate the plot is to appreciate the novel as well, but the way the film portrays broken homes, abusive parents, and a lonely group of kids just trying to get by through the fellowship of one another is subtle and real. The scenes in which you see the kids being bullied would hit home for anyone who's been bullied themselves. The scenes portraying neglectful and abusive families reminds all of us that some kids in this world go through this every day.

Lastly, praise to Andy Muschietti for making one of the most accurate portrayals of a Stephen King novel to date. This goes up there with Kubrick's "The Shining". This is wholesome, shocking, brutally real, and will have you in tears at the end and reminiscing on that one love you too left to move away to some far off town leaving you alone with your nerdy, loser* friends ;) Can't wait for Chapter Two!

I'll preface this review by saying that I rarely see movies in theaters more than once. I am very much a "buy it and watch it until the DVD wears out" kind of guy. I've seen IT in theaters THREE TIMES. It's that good.

There are so many amazing things to talk about in this movie. The script is incredible. Stephen King is arguably one of the greatest writers alive and this adaptation absolutely does justice to his novel (and the Tim Curry TV adaptation). The film looks really stunningly beautiful from a cinematography standpoint, and you can tell they really put a lot of focus on nailing the time period of 1989.

The acting is SUPERB. The kids are all phenomenal. It's easy to point out Finn Wolfhard (especially with his Stranger Things fame) as a standout performance but MAN does the rest of the cast give him a run for his money. Sophia Lillis does an amazing job with a really difficult part, and you can't help but empathize with her and cheer her on. Jaeden Lieberher is also fantastic, and his personal journey will draw you in. You end up caring so much about these kids and what happens to them, and you are with them every step of the way. Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise is magnificent, and definitely deserves the praise he has been receiving.

The score is great. I personally loved the soundtrack.

The scares are good too. A lot of atmosphere and nuance tied to the characters, and a few old fashioned jump scares sparingly thrown in.

I loved this movie, and I would easily see it again. Cannot wait for Chapter 2!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

The only criticism I have is some of the early Pennywise encounters lacked transitions. We were shown one solo Pennywise encounter and then directly showing another without any sort of transition. When children begin to disappear in the town of Derry, Maine, neighborhood kids band together to square off against Pennywise, an evil clown whose history of murder and violence dates back for centuries.

This adaptation of Stephen King's novel 'It' makes it's cinematic debut in creepy, disturbing style, with a lot of heart. A complex coming-of-age tale that prefers slow burn creepy horror over predictable jump scares. Although setting the story in the 1980s may be problematic for some, it thankfully doesn't end up being nostalgia pandering for the sake of it. There are visual references to other 80s movies like Gremlins and Nightmare On Elm Street, but rather than copy them, it sticks to its own world and captures that nightmarish atmosphere perfectly.

With a modest $35 million budget, director Andres Muschietti and director of photography Chung-hoon Chung make this film look 3 times better than it should. The film is accompanied by an effective score by Benjamin Wallfisch (A Cure for Wellness), elegant and beautiful but sometimes almost unbearable when ramping up the tension.

For me, the film delivers on what the trailers promised. Scares. From the opening scene with poor little Georgie, to the bathroom blood bath and to Pennywise crawling out of every space you can think of. With so many memorable moments, it feels like a Director's Cut where Andres Muschietti kept everything in, and that may be the reason for some of the pacing problems.

The cast is pretty much perfect. Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise the Dancing Clown goes from charming to twisted in seconds, and i wish there was more of him. Even with all the makeup and costume, his weird ticks and mannerisms come through. With his scenes in particular, i never questioned when CGI was or wasn't being used, as his presence demanded attention. Though it was strange that his powers had no limits, and gave me the impression he could do anything at any moment.

The young cast that make up The Losers Club are great, their chemistry needed to be spot on and they nailed it. Sophia Lillis (playing Beverly Marsh) is probably the standout. My one complaint would be the character of Richie Tozier (played by Finn Wolfhard). His joking around is fine early on, but as the film progressed i was begging for him to shut up and stop ruining dramatic moments with unnecessary quips. However, i felt for this dynamic group as they overcame their fears, loss, bullying, horror and division to defeat the evil gripping their town.

'It' brilliantly captures the haunting memories of childhood fears, and there's nothing like fear to make a paper man crumble.

First, we see another King's best-seller's cinematographic adaptation's trailer. Then, after watching it, there's no way you could regret: thriller; laughs; emotion, and all above heart (just as its predecessors).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I saw this movie today and I walked out astounded (with a pair of sweaty palms, should I add). I was excited to see Finn Wolfhard in another production, as I was very happy with Stranger Things, and I was extremely impressed with his performance, along with all the other child actors in this movie. Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise was amazing, all of his scenes had my eyes (or eye occasionally, as my hand covered the other in horror) glued to the screen, and had me jumping up in surprise and shock when he suddenly darted forward or attacked. The horror was very good, suspense created execellently through the very good score/sound editing, and grisly, gory special effects (the bathroom scene & Eddie's fear scene notable points). The final act/part of the movie was intense, and the ending was good, seeing everything come together in a very satisfying fashion. Even the side characters (Henry Bowers & his cronies) & subplots were amazing, especially Henry's troubled path and character, which then inevitably leads me to say the script was absolutely amazing. The humour was... surprising, shall we say, but it made me laugh when I was supposed to. This, mixed in with all the other points I've given, made for an incredible experience & an amazing, amazing Stephen King adaptation. Expand

I am very critical of horror movies, as IIT is one of the best horror films I have ever seen. It was filled with scares, hysterical comedy, and a level of emotion that I was not expecting. Parts of the movie were actually downright sad. I am very critical of horror movies, as I often times feel as though they lack good storylines and characters. The cast of this movie was outstanding. Of course, the big draw is Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise. I'm someone who was neither a fan of the miniseries nor a fan of Tim Curry's clown. I never once found Curry's clown scary (Could be just me). This clown is terrifying. Many criticize the film for 'jump scares' but I thought the horror aspects of the film were much more than that. You actually fear the clown, because in a way he's unpredictable. Sometimes he'll just be off to the side and you'll just see him, and other times he will attack. So to some up the positives: its a high quality story that combines the individual struggles of the kids with the greater effort to combat IT, that features outstanding acting by about everyone. It is truly terrifying, the only comparison I can make in terms of scariness is when I saw Alien for the first time. It is far more emotional than I would've imagined. You truly feel for the kids. Now there are few areas I can really knock this film. For one, the CGI wasn't very well done in some scenes. Also, I was not a fan of the dumb decisions made by the kids in this movie. It felt like the scary moments were forced by really dumb decisions that no normal person would make. How hard is it to not stand outside the creepy rundown house, or to not follow a trail into a scary dark room? Another very small criticism was the lone scene with Bill's dad. I was not impressed by the acting job there, but that's small and irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Overall, I highly recommend you see this film, as we almost never get horror films this well done. Expand

Definitely worth seeing in the theaters. The movie was hilarious, frightening, satisfying, emotionally deep, thematically complex, and just a genuinely enjoyable experience. It had its flaws, but they were minimum, and they didn't detract from the central aspects of the film. What sets it apart most, however, is the profoundly entertaining aspect of seeing it in the theater. I was in a packed showing on the opening Friday night in a theater that seated over 500 people with some of my best friends there. At first, it was kind of annoying that people were talking and bustling a bit during the movie; I generally detest when anyone makes even the slightest noise during a public movie. However, what I soon came to realize was that the audience was experiencing this film together in a way I hadn't experienced before. The laughs, of which there are many (the majority coming from a spectacular Finn Wolfhard) were genuine and you felt like you were laughing with everyone around you. The screams were terrifying and the cheers were loud and the applause was booming and I know this sounds like an exaggeration but it was a truly unique experience. Especially in the wake of such a dismal Summer for Hollywood, they really ought take note here. Studios need to give us a reason to go out and see movies, and a reason to not wait 'til we can just watch 'em on our couch at home. They need to turn it into a shared experience that is unique and unattainable through any other means. It did exactly that. On top of that, the acting was superb and I truly felt as though each character was almost exactly how I'd imagined them while reading the book. The writing was good, with the jokes being clever and the themes being thought-provoking, though one downside was that sometimes they kind of hit you over the head as opposed to leaving things up to interpretation or at least letting us figure things out on our own. The cinematography was quite good and there were many shots that stuck with me. And lastly it was just a compelling and entertaining movie that was heart-pounding from start to finish. Maybe the biggest downside is that it will be hard to match this experience with the sequel. However, I have high hopes, and even if that one flops this story in it of itself is touching and will hold a special place in my heart. Expand

It is definitely worth a skip but if you dare, watch It if you can actually be horrified over clichéd clowns. Expand

I remember feeling quite unnerved by them in my younger days, yet as I got older, clowns intimidated me less. To be frank, clowns land more along the lines of “creepy” rather than scary, unlike real unmasked people who could hurt you.

It’s familiar opening scene captures that true scariness: an unsupervised small boy takes a paper boat out on a rainy day, which falls down the sewer drain. A clown peers his head up from below the darkness, his appearance throwing the boy off guard. He displays unusual kindness to the boy, returning to him the lost paper boat. Then suddenly, the predator chews the boy’s arm off, and a God’s eye view looks down on his poor defenseless body flowing into the drain, a truly disturbing sight in this otherwise misguided adaptation of Stephen King’s classic novel.

Now, I understand the movie’s current rave, as It now stands at 90% on RottenTomatoes, and YouTube celebrity Chris Stuckmann gave It an A-, but I for one differ from the public opinion.

Although the critical praise does speak some truth; each preteen we meet goes through change in some way. The sewer-bound kid’s stuttering brother, Bill, is shunned by everybody, and his friends each face their personal growing pains too. Eddie is forced against his will to keep taking meds, Richie resents whatever his friends tell him to do, and Stanley refuses to pursue his family’s Jewish beliefs. Other friends they make include a Black farmer boy, Mike, who must kill sheep for his heartless father, Ben, an overweight new kid who needs friends outside of the books, and Beverly, a gorgeous flame-haired drug addict. Her father creates by far the creepiest moments, as he sniffs her hair like some sex offender. The horror should stem from places like here, the common fears every teenager shares.

Instead, the inexperienced director, Andy Muschietti, abused Dutch angles and motion sickness while filming the “scary” moments. He followed the common misconception that low lighting adds to the fright, which in actuality hurt the thrill here since you now cannot tell what is supposed to scare you. Think about some of the most iconic shots in horror: The shower scene in Psycho, the twins in The Shining, Jack Nicholson in the same movie shouting “Here’s Johnny!”, or even in the original It when Pennywise pops out from beneath the pale-tinted shower. Notice a theme? These images are each evenly lit, anything hidden in the shadows contrasting against something else to fear. Truly effective horror fills in the unknown blanks based on what you think you already see. Maybe if Muschietti utilized real fears, such as a community’s religious state, other than clichés, and knew how to stage them, then these scares could leave a longer impression to the extent of The Exorcist.

The scares particularly fail more due to the atrocious casting of the child actors. Whenever the kids were supposed to act afraid, they just stared blankly and walked stiltly. Even outside the scary scenes, the kids either talked too fast or too slow while screaming their lines when supposed to act angry. Based on speculation, these annoying kids obviously achieved their chemistry by following tape marks and cue cards with the direction, “Just say your lines and go home.”
These kids’ stories also lack any structural balance. The brother-to-brother bond initiated right at the start gets forgotten across a large portion, especially at the very last scene; and Stanley’s Jewish struggles loses any footing with little to do compared to the stronger treatment of his friends. As for the bullies, their interesting backstories receive an undeservingly low amount of screen time, instead existing more for lazy predictable scenarios we’ve seen countless times.

Very little fear strikes your nerve in these moments, as you can never empathize with these kids’ foul-mouthed tendencies. Rather than showing the hard reality of growing up, the kids celebrate their hatred against the oppressors. It even attempts to beautify the one female preteen, Beverly, as much as possible, as she jumps into a lake wearing only her underwear, then lets her new boyfriends gawk at her body as she naps in their eyesight. Then in another dialogue played only for laughs, a pharmacist, who she says looks like Clark Kent, comments her back, saying she looks like Lois Lane! Honestly, the whole beautification of her character made me feel pedophilic myself.

I read several reports that the clowning industry has suffered because of It, promoting coulrophobia, I find this hard to believe. It does not feed off coulrophobia, but rather anthropophobia, particularly predatorial parents. No wonder the Alamo Drafthouse theaters in Austin and Brooklyn hosted all-clown screenings, since clearly, we might as well root for the demonic circus act to win!

Joining Get Out, Baby Driver, and Wonder Woman, as solid but wildly overhyped films, Andy Muschietti continues to prove that he is a horror director who has no idea how to direct horror films. Excelling when it comes the childhoodJoining Get Out, Baby Driver, and Wonder Woman, as solid but wildly overhyped films, Andy Muschietti continues to prove that he is a horror director who has no idea how to direct horror films. Excelling when it comes the childhood relationships on display and the mystery regarding the town of Derry, Muschietti directs the horror scenes like an amateur and has to rely on jump scares to actually conjure up any scare or any sense of atmosphere. Had the film lacked its heart - the kids - then Stephen King's It would have been a film that could have been tossed on the pile of other disappointing King adaptations. As it stands, it is a film that is far funnier and endearing than scary and, as a horror film from Stephen King, it should manage to be all of three of these things. Unfortunately, Muschietti's failure to conjure up any scares that have a lasting impact leave It as nothing more than above average film that fails to live up to its considerable hype.

What makes the film's scares so dull and uninteresting is two-fold. For one, they are predictable. As the camera pans around a bathroom past Beverly (Sophia Lillis), it is obvious what will be in the corner of the room right behind her. As the kids walk through the Well House, it is obvious where the clown will be and what it will do. As the Jewish kid looks at the painting and the picture is gone, take a wild guess what is now behind him. It is a film that never shocks the audience. There are no chances taken. It is by-the-numbers horror filmmaking, putting Pennywise exactly where he is expected to be and then acting that it is scary anyways just because Pennywise makes some creepy face and sprints at the camera. Rarely does this work and Muschietti would be well served to keep his audience guessing, instead of giving into our every inclination. The best horror films hint at the evil lurking around the corner, but never show it unless the timing and anticipation is just right. For this film, it believes Pennywise to be such a compelling horror figure that it just has to rush him out immediately. Often times in film and in It, the horror is scariest when off-screen. Here, when other kids go missing without their disappearance being shown, the film is laced with a great sense of dread. Unfortunately, all too often, Muschietti gives into temptation and sprinkles Pennywise quite liberally throughout this film. By the end, the result is a clown that does not lurk in the shadows, but out in the open and right behind you every single time.

The other element that holds back It's horror impact is its reliance on jump scares. Going hand-in-hand with its predictability, It relies on jump scares or Pennywise running at the screen as his head violently shakes far too often. Gross-out horror and gore are also relied upon at times with similarly minimal impact. Rather than taking the time to build anticipation and an overwhelming sense of dread, Muschietti instead relies upon cheap tricks to steer this ship. Unfortunately, for horror films, reliance on cheap scares is what often undermines their quality and what can make so many quite disposable and forgettable. Though It has a lot to love and some smart themes, it is not really one that can be described as scary. The closest it gets comes as the kids walk around the Well House looking for Pennywise which carries considerable dread and is loaded with classic horror moments that elicit panicked "don't go in there"'s from the crowd. Unfortunately, Pennywise will always pop up right where he is expected to via a pair of jump scares, rendering the scene one with a great build-up but no actual punch. In essence, It not only lacks any imagination for how to elicit fear, but when it does elicit fear, it does so cheaply and in a fashion that rarely actually scares.

The film's cliche ending further disappoints. After two-plus hours of the kids coming together to fight bullies and urging one another to stick together, they do just that in facing off with Pennywise. Unfortunately, the scene not only lacks any tension, but it lacks any originality. Pulling off his mask to force this supernatural being to realize that he has no power anymore due to the lack of fear in the children's hearts, the film really sells its own villain short in the process of delivering a cliche, kill the bad guy as a group type of ending. By reducing Pennywise to being nothing more than a physical representation of fear, the film winds up undermining all of the ominous historical development it showed and turns the character into a rather pathetic one. Lacking the menace, horrifying unpredictability, and inevitability of the very best horror villains, Pennywise is a character who is easily defeated once controlled. Though smartly including this to bring the film's themes regarding fear and how to not let it consume you, it really makes for a lackluster villain in a film that needed his menace. Bill Skarsgard plays the role well, but the mightily

Not because it was scary, but because it had what a lot of newer horror films seem to lack… substance **Slight Spoilers** Some of the criticism I have read of this film was that it was slow, boring, not scary etc. All are valid concerns for someone looking for a standard horror film to do nothing but scare them, but “It” is not your standard horror film. It was not the frights that pulled me in but rather a coming of age story supplemented by a great supporting cast. Though Penny wise the clown was creepy enough, it was the more contemporary villain that came across as more menacing. Each of the main kids had some sort of character flaw or villain they had to overcome, which really added more depth to this compelling tale. For me there is only one other Stephen King adaptation ranked as high and that is Stanly Kubrick’s version of The Shining. This is a must see for fans of Stephen King or anyone looking for a different sort of horror. Expand
