Let Him Go isn’t subtle, but as a genre film it’s original and shrewdly made, with a floridly gripping suspense. It’s a throwback slow-burn thriller and an over-the-top scenery-chewing buffet — sometimes in the same scene. The back-and-forth tone prevents it from being the serious examination of human behavior (and misbehavior) it believes itself to be. It makes the experience of watching more strange than immersive. The pace is deadly slow, the style old-fashioned and the acting devoid of spontaneity. These are skilled actors, but the writing is so threadbare — an important character from the novel has been eliminated — and the direction (by Thomas Bezucha, working from his own adaptation) is so lacking in nuance that genuine dramatic energy gets lost by the wayside during the road trip to North Dakota. Surprisingly engrossing Kevin Coster, Diane Lane film that's well made and builds to a realistically satisfying conclusion, makes a nice change from a lot of the drivel we've been fed of late - 9 stars

This was a lot darker than I expected and there are great performances all around. Kevin Costner is usually the leading man, but his understated performance really compliments Diane Lane's lead. Shocking and heartbreaking, but thoroughly enjoyable.

This movie is a welcome break from the frenetic, manic, self-conscious and market-driven entertainment that is so abundant. I watch that other stuff, but it's tiring the way politics is tiring. Let Him Go is a movie that feels real because the dialog is so spare and the characters are in highly dramatic circumstances of the sort that ordinary people find themselves in. Of course, the stars are more attractive than most people I know. And if we had another half hour of movie time to use, I would have appreciated more development of the back story of the bad guys. But this was a rewarding movie-going experience with a good story, good acting, beautiful scenery from Montana and South Dakota that is hardly ever featured in movies I watch, the values of middle America, the courage of ordinary people, the evil of ordinary people and a realistic time piece set in the late 60s. The YELLOWSTONE fans should get their kicks, the family drama and (kind of sudden) action bits are entertaining. Lags a bit in the middle but worth a recommendation if you think it’s up your alley

And while it has some tense moments, the film proved to be a bit more of a slow burn than I anticipated. The acting from all involved also seemed a little stale to me. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sorry contains spoilers. I was disappointed in this film. The critics were way too generous. It’s wonderful to see Diane Lane and Kevin Costner together again. Both bring a lot to the table and give solid performances in this film. The slower pace and character driven script were both refreshing given what’s currently available. The reason I was disappointed was the realism of the script. There were scenes that didn’t make sense or ring true. I was frustrated with some of the responses and where the script took the audience. I found myself rolling my eyes at how unbelievable some of it was. If my husband of decades was shot and killed I would not leave him in a burning house and drive away with only a few tears (and an ex daughter-in-law I had little connection with), even though I had rescued the beloved grandson. There was a man with her when she discovered her dead husband, why didn’t they pull him out of the house? Lane should have been more distressed with his death just as Costner should have been more distressed when he discovered his dead son. The deaths felt trivialized to the point of distraction.… Expand
