Soft, evanescent and bittersweet.
Jacques Demy showed up with the lightest touch with his 1960 Lola, a movie that has been called a musical without music.
Shot in black and white by the renowned Raoul Coutard, and with a score by Michel Legrand, the film represents an idealized view of reality that will strike some viewers (including this one) as overly sentimental.
Like a Hollywood fairy tale, Lola is always threatening to turn into a musical. Its edge as a film comes from the fact that it never quite does.
