It’s a credit to the cast and Rodriguez’s assured direction that we believe Miguel’s efforts stand a chance.
There are some laughs and the cast is talented, but the movie ultimately falls flat, missing an opportunity to delve into the insecurity, teen bravado and anger that leads to physical fighting in the first place.
All the clear love the film has for the references it is throwing out is never molded into anything memorable of its own.
Miguel Wants to Fight is a flyweight comedy with the misfortune of coming out the same year as the similarly style-forward, action-spoofing teen reckoning Polite Society.
