Nic Cage showed barely any emotion till the last 20 minutes of the movie and I can't think of a single memorable moment in the entirety of this film the only saving grace was the cinematography.

Absolute rubbish. The middle section of the film you have to ask 'wtf was that about?' and as for the ending. Don't bother with this film, you'll be disappointed.

Alright Nicolas Cage fans, this is the moment we’ve been waiting for. It’s 2021 and Pig is finally here, if you haven’t heard of this film until now where have you been?

Rob the truffle hunter (Nicolas Cage) lives an isolated life deep in the Oregonian wilderness. He is forced to return to his past in Portland when his beloved truffle pig is stolen. Clearly Rob has a mysterious past and once he starts searching for his pig in the city he must face some past traumas. I don’t believe I’m alone in thinking Pig was going to be something along the lines of John Wick but with a pig. Despite the warnings Pig really isn’t the film you expect and that’s not a criticism. We all know Nicolas Cage has a wide range of performances, from exceptional to exceptionally terrible. You don’t always know what you’re going to get but Pig is without a doubt one of Cage’s best performances. It’s not full on Nicolas Cage (eg. Mandy) it’s a much more subtle performance and unexpectedly emotional. The story itself may seem a little slow at times and honestly I’m glad of its short running time as I don’t think it needed to be any longer. It carefully and quietly deals with themes of loss and death and honestly takes a lot of unexpected turns. It may not be for everyone so any of you expecting John Wick may want to skip this one. Pig is one of those films to remind us all why we should love Nicolas Cage.

A certain cinema chain isn’t listing any showings for Pig surprise, surprise. So you may have to travel past your local cinema to see this one but don’t let that stop you. Highly recommended and a must see for all the Nicolas Cage fans.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Turns the genre conventions around in a surprising, fresh way. Where you expect violence you are met with introspective dialogue about the meaning of creation and the value of meaningful relationships with others and ourselves. While at times this approach feels futile and generates a sense of hopelessness, it never feels unintentional or naive. The film itself is a reflection of the complicated ideas explored within the narrative and by the end you can't help but feel like Cage's character brought on a positive change to those he encountered vice the expected devastation the first fifteen minutes suggests. Once again in the psychothanatological area, coping with the death of loved ones or the mourning of any existence is a topic that in the 21st century should be treated starting from the 1st season of "True Detective", while the debutant Sarnoski takes the shortcut of instilling silence with the silence, loneliness with the loneliness, emptiness with the emptiness, sadness with the sadness and so on. It's called the rhetorical method, and I am not aware that aesthetics has ever changed its mind on this point.

Not only does this film fail the Bechdel test, but the main female character is mute and then murdered. Two other pivotal women are missing (dying, dead?). Regarding the film-making, changes in tone and credibility are not handled well. Shallow philosophical insights. Expand

Such Individual movies are known as "Cinema" and are the building blocks of the Hollywood Industry. Such movies aren't considered worthy of watching and praising just because they don't belong from a Franchise or Studio.

I love watching such movies but only a few movies touch me deeply in this genre like Joker 2019 and the Pursuit of Happiness were my favorite individual movies. I watched this movie but I didn't find its story epic. Yes, it was a good and decent story but as I said that in this genre, only a few movies can touch my heart but unfortunately pig wasn't among all that. But But But... the character of Nicolas Cage is just amazing in this movie and an Oscar-winning character. His character development was too good and his performance was just excellent. I would only suggest you watch this movie for Nicola's performance. The scene where the protagonist was confronting a specific character in a hotel was outstanding. It's an emotional story of a man dealing with his past and present loss. You would love it if you love such poetic movies. But this movie isn't for everyone.

He plays a recluse who makes his living from the truffles that his pet pig uncovers. When she’s “pignapped,” he sets out to Portland where his past life slowly reveals itself. First-time feature director Michael Sarnoski has given the film a quietly paced, somewhat poetic European feel. It’s a character study that unfolds with mildly interesting and unexpected developments, but also gives Cage an opportunity to play it down (but still doesn't dilute his signature intensity). A dark, somber but ultimately positive character study. Expand

I was already wary of this one walking into it since at this point in his career, Cage indulges in self-parody with any film or role he takes on, and this one is definitely no exception. He looks washed-up, bored, and lost as he wanders aimlessly throughout most of this film alongside a snobby and sharply-dressed Alex Wolff. The story is ludicrous and seems to go nowhere, and there's no satisfaction or payoff of any kind that makes sitting through such an absurd premise of a film worth it in the end. Overall, it's really a waste of time despite some decent and committed performances from Cage and Wolff with the material they're given. Expand

Pig is not what it seems to be at first, and personally for me that unpredictable element was a pretty good thing.

Firstly, because this film is definitely not John Wick with a pig, and secondly because it has a style and tone that are exchanged in a surprising way, but that never seem out of place.
Not everything works in the best way, but it was an experience I enjoyed.

But let's be clear, there's no action here, nor is this a revenge thriller. Forget it.
I mean, the experience doesn't get boring, or at least that didn't happen for me, but I must stress it because even with certain elements of violence, Pig is a story of a man trying to regain the only thing he has left of the reclusive life he lives now.

The character apparently has a past that is mentioned, although not fully explored. But this is not essential to understanding him, because after all he's simply not the man he once was.
What remains of him and what is shown to us is the man who is doing everything possible to find his animal.

Nicolas Cage is not on this film to remind the public that he knows how to act. Those who have seen enough movies know what he can do.
It's just annoying not to see him like this more often.

Because of its style, Pig is a film that must be slowly digested.
It's not made with the disposition to please a mainstream audience and it doesn't try to.
It doesn't compromise its vision either, and it's clearly not afraid of disappointing the audiences who will be wrong about it.

It is what it is. Take it or leave it.

When his beloved foraging pig isFollowing a personal tragedy, a man of once high standing retreats into the Oregon wilderness to live the lonely life of truffle hunter away from the rest of society in order to escape the pain of his past. When his beloved foraging pig is stolen however, he returns to the seedy underground of the world he had left behind to confront some familiar faces and get back what was taken from him. Sounds like the premise for a good action movie, right? Well, Pig is like the total antithesis to that. As if writer and director Michael Sarnoski watched something along the lines of John Wick and thought to himself "what if the character solved the problem nonviolently?"

In a time when we're seeing Nicolas Cage's name attached to only the strangest, most outlandish projects out there right now, such a serious and thoughtful drama may seem like a disappointingly normal choice for the Mandy star. Right from the beginning we're treated to lingering shots of outdoor scenery and a quiet tone reminiscent of contemporary arthouse flicks that slowly opens up into a emotional tale about love, loss, and what's really important in life. We also witness Cage give a more grounded performance where even in the chances he does have to raise his voice it's done without the usual tinge of insanity that's sort of built his brand. I assure you though, this just as weird as anything he's been in lately.

For all it's thematic depth and complexity there's an inherent strand of goofiness running throughout the entire thing. The way the story portrays the selling of rare fungus to restauranteurs as being a dark and dangerous business is so absurd it can only be true. The National Treasure himself even walks around with a bloody, beaten face like a man on a warpath to the concern of absolutely nobody. That's because this is low-key parodying brutal revenge cinema. It's never explicit with its jabs at this other style of film so the experience is far from comedic, but those really paying attention will pick up on the subtle undercurrent of humor present in the plot.

It ends up being the perfect touch as it makes the experience just off-kilter enough to fit it's leading man while still maintaining the air of poignancy and depth that has won it so much acclaim. I do wish its peculiarity had been allowed to shine through a little more though. Particularly in those first 30 or so minutes where you're somewhat bored trying to figure out what the narrative is going for. Yet, when it starts to finally come together you get a solemn, albeit moving narrative that preaches basic human decency over aggression. Making it a delightful oddity with something to say in the career of an actor who's appeared in a bunch of them that don't.

It's writing possesses an uneven storyline and an inconsistent tone, although the themes of death and loss are well-explored. The triumph in 'Pig' however, is the acting. Nicolas Cage puts on what is probably his best performance since 'Adaptation." He perfectly captures the loss and determination underneath a character clinging onto his sole true companion, even if it is simply a pig. The movie as a whole left a lot to be desired, certainly with areas for improvement, but even with its sometime slow pacing, the realistic acting keeps from becoming just a weird, overreaching melodrama. And it does this quite well. That's the gist of the high ratings. Would it be as highly acclaimed had it not been for this Cage-driven gimmick? I doubt it.

It is relatively haphazard in hitting its plot points (going from "new environment" to "new environment" in the search) in order to achieve this subversion of genre and Nicholas Cage being Cagey. All in all, it is a good movie (well shot, solid performances - Cage is great, alongside a great approach towards the topic of pretentiousness, the bourgeois, and loss). But I do believe the gimmick of subversion is what led to the "fanatical" reviews.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am unable to comprehend the praise for this film. This movie was scripted by an "idiot in a hurry", and a six-year-old could have scrawled a better storyline than this...

Your protagonist needs to get across town and meet someone?

SIX-YEAR-OLD VERSION: He gets in a car, and he goes to the house and he meets someone. (nice, honest, to-the-point)

SARNOSKI VERSION: He orders his employer to drive him around aimlessly, while he offers takeaway food to a complete stranger, and he continues to force his employer to drive him to an "abandoned underground hotel, which serves as a fight club, where people gamble on whether or not someone can bash a hobo to death in a minute" (WTF??? WTF????)

Nothing the characters do make any sense... the entire storyline of the film hangs from the most tenuous of idea (singular). The first ten minutes of the film may as well have been a black screen, as I have never seen a movie so poorly shot. The lighting does improve as the movie progresses... but all the artsy-fartsy cinematography comes across as completely contrived and unnecessary.

I am beginning to think Sarnovski must have been a failed chef in a former life... the premise that Cage's cooks real name stikes respect and fear in all who hear it - is simply whimsical to the point of being retarded.

Also, the kill-or-be-killed world of non-professional-wild-truffle farming, creating billionaire Mafia Boss oligarchs of Truffles??? really??

I think the title of the film was also the entire script, written in crayon, on the back of a napkin. That is how pathetically written it is. I'm not certain that any of the ambiguous figures that Cage encounters throughout the film are even meant to be mysterious, Sarnovski just couldn't care less.

Thankfully Cage is restrained, offering mainly grunts and stares for the majority of the film. No-one in the movie is believable in their role, leading to a distinct feeling that everyone involved did not want to be in it.

The music choices (especially some classical and modern pieces) are simply atrocious, and only serve to take you out of the movie. The final blue-balls reveal of the finale - nearly made me retch.

If you enjoy going to underground fight clubs, and letting someone mindlessly punch you in the face over and over and over again... you should watch this film - it will have a similar effect.

PS. The Pig is dead... the entire movie is a total blue-balls fake-out. Ah well, at least I got to hear a tragically bad rendition of a Bruce Springsteen song before my hours-long post-movie disappointment.

The scene with the underground fight club didn't really make much sense but sure, why not.

It's a flawed movie but a tolerable one. Worth checking out but not one really worth ranting and raving about IMO.

While watching this offering, I got the distinct feeling that I was being strung along, hoping that its cryptic unfolding would result in a satisfying payoff yet suspecting it wouldn't live up to that promise -- a suspicion that proved correct. In this story of a once-noteworthy chef who turns into a reclusive truffle hunter in the Oregon wilderness after a personal tragedy, we find a sad and lonely protagonist who becomes distraught when the only thing he truly cares about -- his beloved pet foraging pig -- is kidnapped. The incident prompts him to launch a committed search for the purloined porcine, one that necessitates a return to his Portland roots and his troubling past. Strangely obsessive and offbeat as the story may seem, it's executed with a surprising degree of credibility, yet it never quite attains a level of engagement that would make viewers really want to care about what's going on, cold as that may sound. It also attempts to wax philosophically on a number of occasions, though this aspect of the narrative, like the story line overall, nevertheless feels underdeveloped. Still, the film marks Nicolas Cage's commendable return as an actor worth taking seriously, and it shows considerable potential for a new filmmaker. But, sadly, there's not enough here to reach out and grab the audience's attention to give them a vested interest in how it all turns out. Better luck to the director in bringing home the bacon next time out. Expand

From first time director Michael Sarnoski, Cage plays Rob, a truffle hunter living alone with his pig in the isolated woods outside Portland, Oregon. His valued pig is kidnapped, forcing Rob to travel back to Portland after 15 years of isolation in attempts to find her. What transpires is a film that goes beyond the search, with Cage's Rob confronting people and places left behind and facing a myriad of emotions. Features a strong cameo from actor Adam Arkin (TV's "Sons of Anarchy," "Chicago Hope"). Expand

I think this might be one of the best performances by Nicholas and the guy really gave it his all. The entire movie has this feeling of sadness that was partially eased by the end and in a twist of events it returned in full force(Loved the ending). The idea also of a truffle hunter to go find his kidnapped pig is decent and we actually see the entire journey of the product( From the Forrest to the Kitchen) and all the people that take advantage and use it. This movie isn't for everyone and to be honest you need to be in a specific type of mood to fully enjoy the experience and tranquility that the movie provides. Overall it has been a great(even if sad)movie. Expand

It has an arty feel to it, certainly. The main character has quite a caveman type look and feel to him and his background is very unclear for the most part, which is where the mystery mainly comes from.

There's relatively little dialogue present at times but it doesn't suffer too much from it - its a film that's mainly visually focussed, if that makes sense?. This is definitely a quirky watch but not a bad one. I'd recommend it, yes.

As the truffle is buried in the dirt and yet so noble, so is the role of Nicolas Cage here. More and more neglected and removed from urban society from time to time and yet still fully respected and valued. When the protagonist Rob returns to the industry stage after a long time, you quickly realize who has infected and inspired others with his passion. It doesn't matter in which outfit the protagonist is sitting in a posh restaurant.

It's a rather sad and quiet but also very down-to-earth film that exudes an incredible amount of charm. With its 91 minutes, the film has the perfect length and can therefore take the liberty of letting some scenes breathe a little longer. Nicolas Cage plays phenomenally well here and you can literally feel this brokenness throughout the film through the TV screen. Most of the supporting characters are also solid and fit well with the film's subtheme.

What I think is really great is that after the first few minutes you think you know which direction the film is going, but in the end it's not like that at all and the film goes a nice different way. A film that you can grasp, that is authentic and shows that you don't need a big budget for a well-made film.

4/5 8/10 truffle pigs.

'Pig' is a good film, made very good by its conclusion - which threw me, to be honest. I wasn't, up until that moment, overly invested in the story, but when the reality hits home I actually felt my stomach sink for Nicolas Cage's Robin - unexpected!

Cage does put in a neat display, I enjoyed his performance throughout. Alex Wolff and Adam Arkin add positive bits in their respective roles, too. It's a 2021 flick that is well paced, well shot and well told. Recommended.

This movie is a reminder that out there, there are still some good writers and directors that just care about making a good movie. Pig is about a Truffle Hunter whose beloved Pig is kidnapped. He risks his life and stability to delve back into his past to find his Pig. It may not sound that exciting, but it's actually a surprisingly intelligent story and proof that Nicholas Cage can still act if given good material to work with. Expand

So I don't really have a big sway either way for this one think of it like Taken if Liam was a chosen backwoods hillbilly that use to be a high end cook whose grasp on reality isn't all there. Expand
