A film as important as Saint Judy should have stellar acting that accurately represents the prominent figures being put on display, and its cast absolutely delivers. Michelle Monaghan does a brilliant job reflecting Wood’s determined spirit while still keeping her doubts of the appeal in check when it takes a toll on her personal life. Leem Lubany perfectly complements this performance in her portrayal of Asefa, an asylum seeking Afghani victim of persecution, who holds reservations about her chances to live a life of liberating young women's’ minds in America, only to show glimpses of hope when all is lost. The two opposites play incredibly well off of one another, and their performances are convincing enough to carry the eternity of this influential recreation, which has a booming voice that needs to be heard by all. The film follows compassionate attorney Judy Wood (Michelle Monaghan) as she takes on the case of Afghani immigrant Asefa (Leem Lubany), despite the law being against her. The two leading ladies are powerhouses on the screen, delivering captivating performances that left me filled with pride over the pure force of humanity and strength portrayed through the characters. I was inspired by the simple, yet impactful, theme of allowing love and generosity take lead in your life because you never know who you are affecting in the long-run. I suggest you watch this compelling movie. Expand

Ms. Judith L. Woods, an immigration lawyer, takes on the case of Asefa Sachwar in which her pursuit of asylum in America, in order to escape the Taliban in Afghanistan, is being challenged by the US Government (they held her in detainment for over a year before Woods was able to take on the case and represent her). This is a mild spoiler, but the case ends up being a landmark case for women seeking asylum in America (I say mild because I’m sure it’s on Wikipedia). Ms. Wood’s, and Asefa’s, story is all the more relevant and poignant when considering the political climate today and all of the choppy water surrounding immigration. However, something great about this film is that it does not set out to push a particular agenda or appeal to a particular politically motivated crowd. It simply sets out to tell the story of a lawyer and her client, and in the process helps to paint a picture for those that are too often depicted as evil and criminals long before they even step foot on American soil. Nowadays, a discussion about immigration is nothing but hostile and will automatically place you in one of two categories, liberal or conservative, which will consequentially place you at the receiving end of various and numerous insults and attacks. This film does not seek to attack either of the aforementioned groups, or even address them, it instead seeks to retell a true story without skimping on any of the emotion; of which it does beautifully. The heart and soul of leading actress, Michelle Monaghan, shines through in her performance as she flawlessly embodies the grace and courage of Judith Wood. In addition, other big names such as, Peter Krause and Alfre Woodward, were excellent in this movie and made the story come to life and have soul. The actors made the audience and myself care about immigration law and its injustices. After this movie, everyone will be googling Judith Wood. Expand

Actors like Michelle Monaghan, Common, and Alfre Woodward, just to name a few, turn this incredible and inspiring true story into a movie unlike any other I’ve seen. Throughout this film we see Michelle Monaghan transform into the strong headed woman named Judith Woods, who singlehandedly changes the world for the better, one immigration case at a time. Judy sees the good in all people, whether that’s a good thing or not, but she believes in second chances and for that I applaud her. This story is one that I enjoyed watching in movie form, and I think most people would agree with that statement, so I highly recommend it. Expand

Following the narrative of Judy Wood (Michelle Monaghan), an immigration lawyer, and her fight to defend the case of Afghan immigrant Asefa (Leem Lubany). Asefa desperately seeks asylum in the United States after being arrested in Afghanistan by the Taliban for enabling young girls to read—if forced to return home, she will face execution. Judy’s adamant battle for Asefa’s life transforms into a combat against the United States law of asylum for women. Also featuring Alfre Woodard and Common, the cast incredibly portrays this true story, and its pivotal moment for immigrants and females in American history. I highly recommend you watch Saint Judy, as the plot and performances really gripped my attention. Expand

SoonSean Hanish’s Saint Judy is a well-captured film based on a true story of an immigration lawyer Judith Wood. Judy moves to Los Angeles for the opportunity to fight for the legal rights of immigrants seeking asylum in the United States. Soon enough though, she realizes trying to grant asylum to these individuals is an uphill battle because our legal system has its odds against them. Judy is given a client named Asefa who is a young school teacher from Afghanistan and is inspired to work for her rights and the rights of other immigrants. This film is the story of a hardworking lawyer who selflessly dedicates her life to save these immigrants and alter the foundation of our court system so that these immigrants are treated justly in the future, which made it so inspiring for me to watch. Immigration attorney Judith Wood took on the case of a young woman Asefa, from the Middle East seeking asylum here in the states to avoid a traditional “honor killing” that stemmed from her founding a school that taught young girls to read and think independently. There couldn’t have been a more important time for this films release, and the message paired with the timing gives a generational theme of honoring human rights amongst all genders. Expand

The film followed Judy as she tried to grant asylum to Afghan refugee Asefa. The human rights message the film projects is profound and overall the plot is very uplifting. Aside from the story, I really enjoyed the cast, Michelle Monaghan plays Ms. Woods and Common makes an appearance as the opposition in court; both provide excellent performances. The rest of the cast did a good job of bringing realism to the film by giving emotion to their characters. Director, Sean Hanish, did an excellent job with the flashbacks which serve to reveal depth and complexity in both the characters and the situation. This is a fantastic telling of Ms. Wood's story, led by a talented cast, which makes this an easy movie to recommend. Expand

I’m a big fan of Michelle Monaghan, and she did an incredible job of conveying the resilient bold woman that was Judy Woods. She plays Asefa, a woman who seeks asylum after being persecuted for starting a school for girls in Afghanistan. Delving into her extremely difficult experiences before ending up where she did is powerful. It is a story that I cannot relate to at all because of my privilege, and it’s sad to remember that many people around the world face similar adversities. Judith Wood does everything she can to fight for these people to be able to start a life in America, even though there is an unfair system she has to fight against constantly. Despite this, her optimism, dedication, and compassion keep her going, and it makes the film so uplifting to watch. Expand

True stories are inspiring and to hear about another woman in our government that is making a substantial difference is more than necessary. It’s crucial for girls and women to know that you don’t have to be just a supreme court judge to change the world we live in. All we have to do is make little steps, like Judith L. Wood has for the past 35 years. It starts with us and this movie brings that message to a whole new level. Expand
