While “Shirley” is no “Rustin,” cinematically, Chisholm, like Bayard Rustin, more than deserves her flowers.
It's thanks to this cast that Shirley remains a rousing and emotional tribute to an important figure in American history.

The unknown story of who could have been the First Lady of the United States has its charm and it holds up quite well, without reaching exaggerated levels. To kill about two hours with minimal pain.

O diretor deste longa, John Ridley, é um roteirista e oscarizado pelo trabalho em "12 anos de escravidão", e embora aqui esteja um pouco abaixo, ambos os filmes ele parte de um material biográfico. Em "Shirley", Ridley faz a excelente opção de se concentrar nas plenárias daquela que foi a primeira deputada negra dos EUA, mostrando os bastidores da pré-campanha no seio das contradições do partido democrata, e pondo a vida pessoal da retratada muito em segundo plano.
Assim, o filme começa já em uma velocidade espantosa, sem tempo para envolvimento, o que pode causar afastamento: sem narrar os feitos da política no Congresso, nós piscamos e já estamos vendo ela tentar concorrer ao maior cargo do Executivo da face da Terra, o que claramente prejudica na empatia.
Assim, o começo do filme é bem atropelado, mas havia um porquê: de fato, ao concentrar seu arsenal nas plenárias, o filme só vai crescendo em conteúdo e interesse, por mais didático que muitos diálogos sejam. Portanto, Ridley claramente faz uma escolha em simplificar os diálogos, muito diferente do que fizera em "12 anos" (não sei até que ponto é devido o público do streaming), mas o fato é que isso acaba contaminando as atuações, que não se sentem desafiadas.
No entanto, a riqueza em contar os bastidores, e mesmo sabendo que tudo isso é dentro de um único partido, como as disputas por delegados, o encontro com o líder dos Panteras Negras, a visita a um hospital de seu rival, são pontos que incrivelmente enriquecem a história e servem como momentos interessantes para revelar o pulso da homenageada.
Os sistemas eleitorais são estruturas que determinam como os votos são convertidos em representação política em uma democracia. Eles desempenham um papel crucial na forma como os governos são formados, como os partidos políticos são representados e como as preferências dos eleitores são refletidas nos órgãos legislativos e executivos. Claro que muitos contestadores apenas enxergam nessas estruturas as manutenções do privilégio burguês, de modo que "Shirley" tenta fazer a diferença de forma endógena ao sistema, sendo claramente mais uma reformista (e necessária).
Para quem acha que a questão das identidades é coisa do século XXI, é porque não estudou direito o que a década de 1960 representou para as minorias, assim, o filme narra um ano de 1972 marcado por tensões identitárias, com muito do feminismo e do movimento negro atual sendo retratados ali, mais de 50 anos antes. Interessante resgate, ao mesmo tempo que as falas podem soar quase anacrônicas certos momentos, já que o filme faz pouco uso do audiovisual da época.
Nos Estados Unidos, o sistema de delegados para o Executivo refere-se ao processo de eleição do Presidente e do Vice-Presidente através do Colégio Eleitoral. Este sistema é estabelecido pela Constituição dos Estados Unidos e é único em comparação com muitos outros sistemas eleitorais ao redor do mundo.
Então, concentrando nesse momento de escolha do representante que irá tentar combater o Nixon, Shirley, claro, sofrerá uma série de barreiras, mas em especial suas escolhas políticas duvidosas e seu posicionamento firme perante temas complexos (ela tecia severas críticas aos ônibus inclusivos, por exemplo, por achar que eles aumentavam o risco de integridade às pessoas negras).
Com isso temos um filme que claramente sabe o que quer contar, e por mais que se permita momentos piegas, tem um arsenal sólido de questões relevantes, muito próximo ao que "Lincoln" do Spielberg apresentou, mas de forma bem mais palatável à audiência da Netflix. É um bom filme, que demora a engrenar, mas que, após isso, se permite até mesmo uma edição mais esperta, melhorando paulatinamente no ritmo. Vale muito conferir.

As a character study, it repeatedly points out contradictions in Chisholm that it refuses to interrogate for fear it will come off as critical. The result is a hagiography with some obvious holes, something that a better film might try to balance.
The result is a sturdy but unspectacular film, one that honors Chisholm’s place in history while representing just one, too-concentrated facet of her giant shadow.
The film may offer a Cliff Notes history lesson and a scrapbook take on a life, but it does make you wish Shirley was still around, talking truth to power right now and offering one more aspirational example for those who might step up and disrupt.
For whatever faults she had as a candidate, Chisholm earned her paragraph in the annals of our democracy, and “Shirley” does a conscientious job of fleshing out her story.
Shirley views itself as a punchy, exciting political dossier, but lacks the attention to detail to make it anything other than a historical summary.
Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm (Regina King), the first African-American woman elected to the House of Representatives, was an inspiring, trailblazing politician, particularly in the areas of race and gender politics. After winning her seat in Congress in 1968, she later went on to run for the Democratic Party nomination for President in 1972. And that impressive background, one would think, should provide the basis for an engaging, uplifting film biography. Unfortunately, writer-director John Ridley’s take on this groundbreaking, often-unappreciated pioneer misses the mark in a number of ways. The biggest problem is a script that tries to cover too much ground in its 100 runtime, addressing an array of elements from Chisholm’s personal and political life and not covering either area particularly well, most notably in the film’s first half before settling down in the picture’s back end. The narrative jumps around so much that the picture becomes choppy and unfocused – almost incoherent at times – primarily due to some inexplicably mystifying film editing and a lack of sufficient explanation and back story, especially for those who may not know much about the protagonist’s life going in. The film also features some rather questionable casting choices, such as the selection of actor W. Earl Brown to portray Alabama Governor George Wallace, who neither looks nor sounds anything like the conservative Southern Democrat who also ran for President in 1972 and was subsequently shot during the campaign. Even King’s performance is somewhat uncharacteristically lacking as she struggles mightily to definitively capture Chisholm’s singular demeanor and vocal inflections, qualities that sometimes don’t always resonate, despite the actress’s strong physical resemblance to her character. The real standout here is Lance ****, who gives one of his career’s best portrayals (as Chisholm’s political mentor) in one of his last screen performances. It’s disappointing that this inspirational social and political leader hasn’t received the worthy cinematic tribute she truly deserves. Perhaps “Shirley” might have worked better as a miniseries than as a standalone vehicle, as that format likely would have provided a better option for more fully telling her story in all of the detail it seeks to depict here. Indeed, for someone who endeavored to rise up to the challenges she faced, it’s disheartening that the film seeking to depict that effort doesn’t match what she so earnestly sought to accomplish.
