Smile holds no surprises. No big twists. You know what you are getting going into this movie. It is predictable from the first minute. Bacon is great fun as a girl on the verge of a nervous breakdown, chirping with increasing desperation that she's fine, and Finn is a pleasingly nervy stylist, letting the camera tilt and flip at seasick angles and ratcheting the tension as he goes. Wow, this film really scared me! I thought this was very well done all around. It's basically a curse movie like The Ring with a lot of psychological themes that's extremely well acted and directed. Highly recommend.

Standout performances include the lead of Sosie Bacon, supporting actor Kyle Gallner, and the ever illustrious but underused Robin Weigert. While the film dips several toes into well worn genre tropes, is a tad overlong, and will not be amongst its more groundbreaking peers, Smile brings it's own color to the spectrum and it stands out from the majority of the pack of this years horror/thriller offerings.… Expand

Smile is a horror film directed by Parker Finn in his feature directorial debut. For someone's directorial debut, this is very impressive.

There are deeply unsettling visuals and proper tension. The movie is reliant on jump scare and it can get tedious. However, there is a fair amount ofSmile is a horror film directed by Parker Finn in his feature directorial debut. For someone's directorial debut, this is very impressive.

There are deeply unsettling visuals and proper tension. The movie is reliant on jump scare and it can get tedious. However, there is a fair amount of jump scare with good build-up and payoff which did scare me. I also love the sound design in this film. The director uses it effectively to create a creepy feeling. The first 2 acts of the film are well done. We see our main character Rose (Sosie Bacon) slowly descend into madness as the 'curse' becomes more prominent. On that note, Sosie Bacon is phenomenal as the main lead. She gives a convincing performance of someone who is losing their mind.

Nevertheless, this film falls into a lot of the generic tropes of a horror movie. Its plot isn't original, you've seen it in films like It Follows and The Ring. It has a lot of the same beat-for-beat elements you've seen a dozen times. Even the ending is something you have seen in other horror movies. The main character also says and does incredibly stupid things. There are also moments in this film that are unintentionally funny and silly but are meant to be serious moments. Overall, it is a well-made horror film, especially for a director's first film. Still, it never really goes beyond a generic horror movie. If you want something different in the horror genre then this is not it. I still look forward to what Parker Finn does next though because he is very promising!… Expand

I am still uncertain about Smile. Is it good, I dont know. Is it a typical horror movie, yes in the complete sense of typical. I believe my struggle is almost 2 hours to get us to a "been there done that" kind of ending. It does not take itself seriously, but it is good that it didn't. MyI am still uncertain about Smile. Un film qui ne va pas vous donner le sourire, même au second degré… certes, c’est à tendance (vaguement) horrifique avec cette psychiatre qui voit des choses (et devient bargeot) mais ça ne vous fera pas peur non plus ! non, la seule chose que vous fera ce film, c’est… dormir !

Car en fait,Un film qui ne va pas vous donner le sourire, même au second degré… certes, c’est à tendance (vaguement) horrifique avec cette psychiatre qui voit des choses (et devient bargeot) mais ça ne vous fera pas peur non plus ! non, la seule chose que vous fera ce film, c’est… dormir !

Car en fait, il s’agit d’un somnifère ! en cas d’insomnie, regardez ce film pendant un certain temps (cela varie selon les gens bien sûr) et en général, vous piquez du nez en un petit quart d’heure ou au pire, allez en 20 minutes, c’est plié, vous ronflez comme un sonneur !

Il faut dire que la mise en scène molle devient de pire en pire (encore plus molle et endormie) alors qu’en même temps, le scénar de ce nanar de crevard fuit de toute parts et part on ne sait pas où (on s’est endormi, putain !). L’actrice principale joue mal et en plus, elle n’est même pas jolie… quant aux autres clampins égarés dans ce films de fous sous Lexomil (ou Prozac peut-être), il n’en mênent pas large non plus.

Bref, on a certainement de quoi faire la gueule ici parce que c’est nul à chier, ce truc (qui dure deux plombes lourdingues à mort !).… Expand
