The second was not as good, but it was still decent. Taken 3 is mediocre at best. Liam Neeson is fine as the man "with a specialized set of skills." Forrest Whitaker is good as the Inspector. They are not the problem, nor are the myriad supporting actors. The script is the problem. There are so many ridiculous events and twists going on in this movie that it boggles the mind. And could this be any cornier? Methinks not. Finally, the directing is just terrible. Where "Taken 3" takes its audience is on a pretty dumb ride. Expand

I was excited to hear that the Taken films would become a trilogy, because I had loved Taken (and had watched it so many times I could remember most of its iconic lines). The first Taken was dark, gritty, and very personal for BryanI was excited to hear that the Taken films would become a trilogy, because I had loved Taken (and had watched it so many times I could remember most of its iconic lines). The first Taken was dark, gritty, and very personal for Bryan Mills--his daughter was abducted and was soon going to be prostituted, he had little time to find her, and they were growing apart as she grew older. Taken 2 was not as good as the first one, but respectable in its own right. Taken really felt like standalone story, so Taken 2 detracted from that and kind of felt unnecessary. Nevertheless, I honestly don’t know why people complained so much about Taken 2. Taken 2 expanded well on the characters and furthered themes from Taken. Sure, Taken 2 might’ve seemingly pulled a “Hangover 2” move and became a rehashed version of it’s predecessor. But it had some interesting juxtaposition, as Bryan and Murad (father of Marko, who was tortured then killed by Mills in Taken) were both fathers seeking what they viewed as rightful vengeance for actions perpetrated against their offspring. Taken and especially Taken 2 also both had exotic scenery & locations in Europe (Paris in T1and Istanbul in T2), which really helped sell the films.

Taken 3 probably made a good choice when it decided to NOT have the film’s plot revolve around someone being “taken”. (How come they never use the word abducted or kidnapped?) However, being set in a typical American city (Los Angeles) and using a pretty generic story (innocent person framed for a crime, must find ones responsible) both didn’t set the odds in Taken 3’s favor. The whole “framed” trope is not a very effective plot device, because *SPOILERS* Stuart (Lenore’s husband) and Oleg Malankov (Stuart’s boss, of a sort) were both involved in Lenore’s murder, not as revenge against Bryan, but because of an unpaid debt between the two (and to get her life insurance money). Lenore was killed as punishment from Oleg Malankov against Stuart. Therefore, there is no real meaningful conflict between Malankov and Bryan, as Bryan was simply involved in the entire mess as a scapegoat (and Malankov is set as a villain far too late into the film). Even though Malankov is supposedly some sort of badass, he is a terrible shot and cannot get a single hit on Bryan. Bryan and Stuart's dynamic happens to be convoluted and unsatisfactory.

Taken 3 is honestly sub-par and mediocre, especially compared to it's predecessors. I don't even know why Forest Whitaker is in T3; he is such a stereotypical by-the-book cop. I think another actor (Denzel W, Idris E, Samuel L. J) might've been better suited for his role. Unlike Taken 1&2, little time is spent on further developing characters, as the film is very fast-paced. There is action, but it is not very tense or exciting. How are we even supposed to root for Mills to fully kick ass when he's sometimes going up against American cops and possibly endangering civilians? Not to be racist, but it was easy to cheer Mills on as he defeated hordes of evil foreigners. (You could tell from looks who was a bad guy! :P) In chase scenes, shaky camera work truly ruins the fun; they're very choppily and awkwardly edited as well. CGI and big stunt sequences look low budget; Taken 1&2 looked better! The whole film is a half-assed conclusion to the Taken films, with mediocre acting, an uninspired plot, cliche and stereotypical characters (smart person has chess piece & rubberband to fiddle with), "dues ex machina" moments, unimpressive and overdone action sequences, etc. I blame Olivier Megatone and the other crew members (screenwriter, camera crew) for the faults of what could've been a satisfying conclusion to the Taken trilogy.

However, despite everything I said earlier, I cannot deny that some younger (funny cause I am pretty young) and more carefree part of me enjoyed watching Bryan Mills have one last adventure (if indeed this is the last Taken film). I have some fond movie memories of Liam Neeson, and I enjoy most of his films (like Non-Stop in 2014). If you're not as cynical or critical as most movie critics eventually become, you may very well enjoy Taken 3.

Score: 6.9

I have reviewed 38 other movies, including the 2014 films: The Interview, Exodus: Gods and Kings, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, Dracula Untold, The Maze Runner, Nightcrawler, The Equalizer, The Expendables 3, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Giver, Sharknado 2, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Edge of Tomorrow, X-Men Days of Future Past, Godzilla, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Divergent, Transcendence, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, and more.

I review TV shows, such as: The Flash, Arrow (Season 3), Gotham, The Last Ship, Sleepy Hollow, Marvel's Agents of SHIELD (Season 1 and 2), The 100, I Wanna Marry Harry, Crisis, Gang Related, and more. I also have reviewed the mobile Android games Minecraft Pocket Edition, Clash of Clans, and Five Night's at Freddy's.

if u are a fan of the previous Taken movies, then it is worth a watch just to see how it all "ends" but be prepared for less action than the previous ones. if u are new to the trilogy then maybe u should catch it on dvd/rental as it is not so great on its own.

Liam Neeson and Forrest Whitaker did not disappoint, although they had to deal with a pretty incompetent director and a maudlin script chock full of unrealistic heroics and unwarranted fidelity. When you are watching a car chase and you have no idea who is in which car, it is annoying, but if you want to escape a world much worse and more boring than your everyday one, you will enjoy your 108 minutes of Taken 3. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Story made no sense, and the entire movie hinges on the action within the first 30min. Why would he run and take down cops if he were innocent ?! No sense.
Anyway, for the movie's sake (if you look over this part) it was full of action and even a few car chases!
His friends make an appearance (reminded me of the A-team at times), but in the end, it's Liam Nesson kicking it.
In summary, wait for rental or VOD. I should have waited. Not that great. I'd say Taken2 might have been better honestly, but the daughter is still just as clueless in this one.

The acting from the cast is good as to be expected from the likes of now action star Liam Neeson and Forest Whitaker, but their efforts would be better used if only Luc Besson would put effort into writing a less mediocre script. The directing from Olivier Megaton who also helmed Taken 2, leaves much to be desired with the constant shaky cam during the PG-13 approved fight scenes that hamper the experience instead injecting realism into the already far-fetched story. Seen years ago in Charles Bronc Death Wish series, and lately in The Equalizer of Denzel Washington. Nonetheless it is a movie that is never obsolete specially with an actor as charismatic as Liam Neeson (Bryan Mills). Bryan Mills is caught amidst a business settling between his ex-wife husband (Dougray Scott) and Russian arms dealers. His mission is to protect his daughter (Maggie Grace) and take revenge for his murdered wife (Famke Janssen). He did it skillfully under the admiration of police officer Forest Whitaker. No real scenario or acting, no interpretation of how done, just super human skills, even beyond police, that's it from the very beginning, no wonder Bryan Mills got them all at the cost of some scratches. The theatre was almost full for this favored theme and actor. Expand

It's always great to see Liam Neeson back in action, but this slightly skewed towards family violence drama than the action sequences of race against time in the first episode seems to be less exciting. It has some memorable score (A Stutter feat. Arnor Dan by Ólafur Arnalds), it still presents the same kind of lifeless actions with some unintentionally hilarious moments which shall manage to attract the attention of the crowd, otherwise it just changes the previous mediocre Taken 2 into Taken which the taken target this time is actually the audiences rather than the characters themselves. Well here we are again for everyone’s favorite ass kicker, Liam Neeson returns as Bryan Mills, your run of the mill, go and get some warm bagels, pepper cutting, big panda toy getting dad, trying to bring his fist of retribution down onWell here we are again for everyone’s favorite ass kicker, Liam Neeson returns as Bryan Mills, your run of the mill, go and get some warm bagels, pepper cutting, big panda toy getting dad, trying to bring his fist of retribution down on someone for taking his daughter… Wait the daughter wasn't taken this time, OK, bring his fist of retribution down on someone for taking his ex wife, wait she wasn't taken either.. So no one was taken this time, you sure, he won’t have some sweet movie quotable ‘I’ll find you I’ll kill you’ line and what not, then why the hell is this called Taken! WHO THE HELL WAS ACTUALLY TAKEN!?

Anyway, everything seems like it’s going well for the Mills family, we welcome back Maggie Grace as Bryan’s daughter Kim who seems happy now with a boyfriend in tow, as well as some exciting news to share, and we also welcome back Famke Janssen, Bryan’s ex wife, Lenore St. John.

tak3n-gallery2Moving on, and maybe everything is not going smoothly with Lenore and her husband, Stuart St. John played by Dougray Scott, as tensions rise after a few meetings between one another, and as like the explosions you’ll read about below, Boom, someone gets kills, someone sets up Bryan, Bryan sets in motion a hell fire attack to find out what really happened, and BANG, Bryan turns into super spy once more!

Apart from the over the top car chases with now expert driver Bryan Mills, some of the action on the roads look hard hitting, but seem so over the top that it’s just thrown in to make it an action ACTION film. It’s not needed in the degree used here and I would have preferred it to have been made shorter, tighter, and a bit more believable.

taken44There are some laughable car explosions, where at times how it’s filmed It felt like a parody explosion. It goes Boom, and then again, and another angle and then the first explosion with someone watching and then another explosion even though it had already blown up. It’s like you can even tell someone has gone ‘now’ and the pyrotechnics person has just gone, oh **** I’ve missed my cue I’ll go anyway, you can see the set explosions. It’s surely an honourable mention for worse explosion of this year, fortunately Taken 3 only came out on 8th January here in the UK, so there is plenty of time for than award to get ‘taken’ away!

BOOM! Sorry another explosion at the end on the car for no reason.

taken33Other scenes play out unusually aswell. For example at a road side shop or gas station, it suddenly turns into gun heaven, I thought these were suppose to be experts at their trades, nope we will just shoot clip upon clip through the drinks on the shelves in case we hit someone. No one else is about, not another member of the public, just Bryan and these other gun toting men. Even the fight scenes here are slow and sluggish, it just looks like Liam Neeson just didn’t want to be there half the time. Its not to say its awful, but it just doesn’t feel as fluid as previous fights. Maybe its the age catching up on Neeson a little, maybe its the lack of interest, maybe its just poor choreography.

Even one of final shoot out has its hilarity moments, our main lead Bryan against what seems to be against the a bunch of throw away shooters who couldn’t hit a door if it’s front of them, in this case down a small hallway on automatic burst, not a single touch. Same goes for our boy Bryan in most cases, goes through the ammo like no man’s business, hitting only with the last shot, but he can take the wire off a chandelier from 20 foot away and from round the corner! Amazing! Throw in the fact that half the time in this particular scene it looks he is fighting a baby in a nappy, then it’s Oscar worthy time!

tak3n-gallery1I enjoyed Taken, and I thought Taken 2 at points was OK if a little bland, and I wanted to enjoy Taken 3 as well, but I just didn’t really that much. It never felt as engaging as the first, or interesting as the second, even with the turn of events in Taken 3’s story. Certain characters also seem really wasted, like Forest Whitakers character, he has aspects and traits that are shown, but never touched upon or expanded (elestic band and chess piece), and in the end he is just another throw away character, then you have the best runner in films, Maggie Grace, playing Kim again no different to any of the previous two films, even though she has experiences things, and grown stronger supposedly, she is the the exact same character with the same expression and, “dad no” lines, or cheese layered with extra cheese scenes, and I thought Shannon from Lost was annoying… No wait, yup Shannon from Lost was still blooming annoying!

tak3n-gallery3Dougary Scott’ character is as obvious as you want, and then you have Sam Spruell playing Oleg Malankov who is in the first scene acting like the big bad Wolf, and then ends up in that previously mentioned nappy scene, so yep, you can see how much his character was developed.

Following the thrilling first installment, and totally forgettable second installment, comes this slightly less forgettable third film of a franchise that really didn't have much right becoming a franchise in the first place.

The action sequences are typically exciting, equipped with well choreographed fight sequences, repetitive as they become. However, I was disappointed with the quality of the image on many occasions, particularly the opening credits. For an IMAX film, it really didn't look or feel like one. And in one particular chase sequence on the road, the visual effects suffer significantly.

But the acting, script and story is really where the film falls flat. Neeson, Scott and Grace turn in poor performances; and while it's always a pleasure to see Whitaker on screen, his character, along with all the others, is as generic as they come.

It is better than the third film, but that's not a difficult challenge. A weak setup, an unconvincing cast and an abrupt ending make Taken 3 below average Hollywood action fodder.

I suppose I just wasn't particularly taken with it.

If your looking for Liam Neeson going on a murderous rampage and little story to string it together, Your in the right place. But sadly If your looking for more then just that you won't find it here. The story is reminiscent of movies like "The Fugitive" and a others that have told the same story before. At the least the action is done good and its done right, some scenes leave you speechless and others have you waiting for the second the fist fight begins.
All together Taken 3 is good for a weekend action flick but that's about it, You'll probably forget by the next week.

This is an action thriller film, the third in the trilogy and as such it is similar to the previous films, so if your familiar with them then you'll know what to expect, such as betrayal and deception, fugitives and hostage situations.

It starts off as quite a slow moving, yet tense, although the plot pace does very much increase after the first twenty minutes or so. I thought it seemed a somewhat gritty and slightly sinister seeming film, with viewers clearly getting the feeling that something big is coming their way but its not entirely clear quite what it is. I noticed quite early on that there was a lot of shaky and jerky camerawork, which on one hand I suppose added to the sense of things being on a knife-edge, of things being quite unstable.

Following on from previous Taken films, Mills utters the words - '...I don't know why, I don't who but im going to find them' regarding the perpertraitors of the murder and with an element of somewhat overly enforced melodrama by way of female characters putting on a 'tear-fest' of sorts and quite a strong use of orchestrated music during the more emotional moments, you could say its relatively cliched but it didn't entirely put me off.

I was keen to watch this after hearing that Forrest Whitaker is in the cast, as I'm quite keen on a number of films he's been involved with. In this film, he plays Franck Dotzler, the head of the police investigation team dealing with him. He does well in playing a strategic, deep thinking person - someone almost as determined to get his man as Neeson is. Of course Liam Neeson plays the main role, the reprisal of retired CIA agent Bryan Mills, who is as rebellious and, as I say, intent on finding the guilty party and protecting himself and his family, as ever. Bryan's ex-wife, Lenore St. John, is played by Famke Janssen, while other cast members include Maggie Grace as Bryans daughter, Kim Mills, and Dougray Scott who plays Stuart St. John. The acting mostly seemed fine, although I did think that perhaps Famke Janssen was a little bit over the top in terms of sentimentality. I suppose you could argue that Liam Neeson, if anything, slightly over-does the whole whispering talk but it didn't ruin my enjoyment of the film in general.

There are numerous chase scenes and some fairly impressive explosions and the sort as well. Plot wise and in terms of the atmosphere and so on, I found myself thinking that it reminded me somewhat of a series of the hit US drama/thriller TV show 24. Content wise, the film contains some partial nudity and mild sex references and there is action based violence, mostly including gunfire, although there are torture related scenes as well, which some may find quite disturbing. There are ocassional instances of strong language, although it isn't littered with graphic swear words and of course in general it has quite a strong feeling of threat and danger present for the majority of the film, which could frighten younger viewers. The film has been given a 12 rating in the UK, although I believe there is an extended cut version available which has been given the higher 15 rating, partially due to stronger language, so thats probably worth bearing in mind if your contemplating watching the film with younger kids around (check if its the extended version or not).

At the end of the day, this really is nothing particularly special but its quite watchable and entertaining, even intriguing at times, regardless. Its an easy watch - you don't need to be paying very close attention to whats said and what goes on all the time as it isn't really a complicated storyline, which is good if your just looking for a light watch. Given this is the 3rd in a trilogy of films, I'd say its not too bad - its not great but its ok.

Yes, I'd recommend it. Its quite watchable and entertaining and is tense and somewhat intriguing at times, although it does suffer from featuring a bit too much in the way of cliches and unnecessarily melodramatic moments and I found the shaky/jerky camerawork to be off putting. The cast is good and I thought it was an alright easy watch, so I suppose I would recommend it on that basis but don't expect it to be a remarkably good watch or anything, just an average Hollywood action film, with some decent chase scenes. If it weren't for the cliche elements and the overly-melodramatic side to it, I'd likely have given it a 4 star rating.
