While the cast is talented and the tone is classy, The Charnel House never develops any momentum. The movie puts fright on the back burner to tease out a mystery that proves to be too profoundly idiotic to be worth all the bother.
The Charnel House is a really interesting and original story. It's refreshing for a movie of this genre as it does not contain demons, exorcisms, or simply slashing people for cheap thrills. It contains a highly talented cast (who are also remarkable attractive) including a lot of up and comers. (Joe Keery from Stranger Things!!!)
The Charnel House sets the bar high for this year's horror movies. A thriller/suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Even though the movie presents what at first may seem like a slow paced story we later on see that it's just building tension.
THe setting is pretty good as is the cast. About the cast, that's probably one of my favorite things about the movie. They perform so well together that you tend to forget they are acting and might even think they're the characters themselves.
It's a well needed refreshment in the current horror scene where most things are either just found footage or easy jump scares.
If you've got some free time I'd highly recommend you go check it out, it's an overall great experience and you won't regret it!
The Charnel House is probably one of the best limited release horror films I have seen, though that's not saying quite a lot. The film is a horror/thriller that I wish would have increased the quality in both cases. The few moments of true horror were fairly impressive, and the visuals were fairly impressive given the budget. The cast did their part to the best of their abilities, though certain characters were greatly underused throughout the film. The most satisfying part of the film is it's wonderful twist that kind of made the slower build up understandable. The film falls short in certain areas such as character development of the characters other than Callum Blue's character Alex Reeves, and the writing/understanding of parts of the over all story. To judge the film, it is a pretty good little horror that thankfully doesn't just rely on jump scares, though you may get bored waiting for the really good twist to kick in.
If you liked the movie Rose Red then you will hate this movie. If you hated Rose Red then you will despise this movie.
It's shoestring at it's most threadbare.
