A mildly amusing yet bland film, that left a distinct feeling of unfulfillment.

I was wary of a film of his material, and was pleasantly surprised as it unfolded. However, the movie slowed to a crawl, the dry British wit evaporated, and I found myself bored during the second half. From what I had read, the new ideas, such as carrying the Vogons through the entire film and the "point of view gun", were Adams own, but the way they were implemented didn't have the sparkle of his off kilter sense of humor. What a shame. Expand

Very disappointing if you've read the book.

This film got boring after a while and just lost interest with it near the end. Just don't like it myself. I'm not saying it's not funny but it lost my interest. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the the Galaxy 4.8/10

It honestly feels as though the film often tries to see just how weird it can be and this inclination is a bad one because these moments ruin the film. When it works as a social commentary on bureaucracy and government, The Hitchhiker's Guide to Galaxy soars. It is funny, spastic, and laugh out loud funny. In particular, Alan Rickman as a manically depressed robot is the best part of the film with his lines consistently funny. Yet, there is simply not enough of this as the film departs what works and just accepts trying to see if it can make its audience laugh out sheer awkwardness and oddness. Spoiler: it can't. This eventually turns watching the film into a bit of a chore with every great scene countered with an equally bad scene. It is honestly too bad, but the end result is a middling film that does make you laugh, but not nearly enough. Expand

On one hand it is a really faithful adaptation as they tried to get as much of the book content into the movie. On the other hand the humor, wordplay, satire and irony are far weaker than in the book. However I admit that they used a lot of care for the sets, look of special effects and costumes. I read the book a few times and it is one of the all time classics but I have not read it in years. So I am not the ultimate authority in judging it adaptation-wise. However there are tons of things I recognize. They added a few things and that is O.K. Even Douglas Adams made different alterations for different medias. I think they failed at delivering the humor. With better writing and timing it would be a masterpiece. The actors are well chosen for me and I will praise Sam Rockwell for his portrait of Zaphod Beeblebrox, Mos Def as Ford Perfect and Zoey Deschanel as Trillian. I think that there was no bad acting in this movie. In my circle of friends we discussed a lot about this and came to the conclusion that it is a hit and miss movie. Even I would have rated it higher after watching it but then after some though my ratings declined. Overall it is watchable and entertaining but nowhere near as funny and ironic or iconic as the book. I would recommend the BBC production instead. It is really good and has critical and fan acclaim. A great movie for those who love British comedy, it’s not as good as the book, but worth watching
